  1. NOT ALWAYS THE TRUCKERS FAULT!

my fire dept got called out on the njtp at near exit 6 at 12:30 am on sunday a 17yr old girl spun out and hit the concrete divider, a tractor trailer tried to avoid it ,hit her ,lost control, ran the divider , stopped about 500 yds away ,burst in flames and in was incinerated in the burning tractor,he was 25 yrs old. oh and the girl and her 16 yr old male passenger recieved minor injuries, and too top that off that was the second accident she had that day!!!

  2. welcome to the site, I had a 47 LS85 sold it after we bought a 54LS85 , on the 47 had the hinge pin mirrors with about a 4" mirror head which was very hard to see out of.also it only had one arm which vibrated when moving , did change to a 5x7 chrome head for better visiablity , if you now have a west coast type mirror you might be better off to leave them on it. good luck

  3. We are looking for a source to obtain a replacement gas tank sending unit for our 1958 Mack fire truck. Any help will be appreciated!

you shouldn't have any trouble finding one. I see that item listed at www.patwalshrestorations click on MACK then mack 'B' . their phone is 781-246-3266. If they can't help e-mail me for a list of others for parts for macks.

  4. Can anyone tell me if the CF600 Mack fire apparatus had a negative or positive ground? Also can you tell me how to convert if it's positive ground? Are wiring diagrams available anywhere?

your mack should be a positive ground, every thing on the truck works positive ground,if you have a fire radio it has to be positive ground to operate. the mack musemun would have the specs on the truck and you will get a wiring diagram in the packet. If your engine is gas you will probably have to change the wiring at the coil/distr. if it is diesel I don't know the procedure

  5. thanks for reply, their is no vaccum unit , the transfer valve is manually operated, the control rod goes through the pump panel to 2 gears that rotate a diverter inside the pump casting , you can only move the knob a half turn , have another mack and the knob goes 3.5 turns to complete the operation of pressure to volumn or visa/versa. thanks, AL

  6. Albert,

Are you talking about the Pressure Volume transfer valve? Is the valve operator using engine vacuum? If so you also have a manual lever under the pump that operates the valve. Try to operate it manully. You should have a QL75 hale pump, I can check the diagram and let you know if there is any lubrication point for the valve.

  7. have a HALE 750 gpm fire pump on my 54 mack , the transfer control is stuck ,any ideas on how to free it up, someone said to remove the two 2.5 discharge manifold off and spray rust cutter up in their to free it up. THANKS

  8. Want a good story about them bleeders then look in brakes and find my posting about those bleeder screws. I had the concerns that you ran into. My out was going to take them to a machine shop and have them drilled and retapped. Seemed to be a good alternative for me financially. NAPA had in stock enough bleeders for me to replace all 8. I got lucky as none of mine broke but I got really nervous. Only stripped the heads on 3 of them.

could you get me the part numbers from napa for the bleeders ? thanks

  9. Albert,

New are not available, the easiest solution is to send them to Whitepost Restoration in Virginia, they do excellent work and rebuild the cylinders with brass sleeves and are then guranteed for as long as you own the truck for about the same cost as new. 2 day turnaround. They include all new hardware and rubber etc.

thanks for the info, looks like that is what I'm going to have to do, I actually broke off the bleeder fitting that screwed into the cyl, these old trucks are nice but seems like ever part you fix it leads into another repair , this all started with replacing 1 brake line that was rusted through, then replaced 2 others , then the bleeding air from system broke the bleeder valve , and each wheel has 2 cyl's and none of the bleeders look good .

    thanks AL

  10. You are going to need to know which axle, and brake setup your truck has installed. A competent counter person at either a Napa, or Carquest store could be good leads but as a last resort they can be sleeved to use standard and routinely available cups. It really is not that expensive the have performed. Look up whitepostrestorations.com for one vendor. They are probably the most expensive for a guide if you don't use them.

    Rob

thanks for the info rob, I just got the build sheets from the mack museum ,so that should help, the key is finding a good counter person like you said . I used whitepost before to rebuild a master cyl and hydrovac unit on a 47 mack I have.

    thanks Al
