Never herd anyone do this, My mack has the 13 speed which has a red spliter button insted of a grey one but the top part of my shifter knob is gone and it feel much like the ef shifter, other than the up and down position which to me i don't get lost as much with it because the last truck i drove had a 18 speed eaton that the spliter lines were crossed and it worked backward. Sometimes if i get in a 18 or 13 if i don't pay attention i really mess up, drove that 18 speed with the backward spliter for 3 years

If you look at the ch, check to see what air ride it has, some of them suck with a top heavy load, like a low leaf, you can use them i have hauled 26 ton on a pete air trac you just have to be ready to chatch her in the curves they can lean bad sometimes. Hauled on a newway once that held up as good as a camel back it was some what of a rough rider for air ride but maybe take her out and get a load of rock on her for your driveway and try it out before you trade just to make sure you like the way it handels. The newway airride was on a western star that was a factory dump with 48 rears it had dual air control vavles for the air ride, it had one vavle located on the drivers side of the axle housing and one in the middle of the back rearend, it also had large airlines going to the bags seems like the were 3/4 or 1 ince i may be wrong but they were bigger than any i had seen before, also had a dump vavle in the cab so you could let the air out of the bags when you were spreading rock, the airtrac pete had a dump vavle in the cab also but it did not work, and that thing was wicked when you got the bed up about half way and the load shifted to the back make you pucker up in the seat, if it were me i would try it out just saying, good luck

  3. Hey i like them all, but the old big cams are my pick of the litter!! You can do a inframe on one for el cheapo, and love the power of the 400 bigcam 3, and they have a good jake. The 3406 will usally run by a cummins if they are set right and are a blast to drive, but when something goes wrong they can get coastly. any one of them i would recomend if they are taken care of they will give you alot of service, never been around the e9 but they say they are a beast. The ones i drove the cummins got a little better fuel mileage than the cats. I can't help myself the old big cam is my pick, If you want to hit the freeway loaded the big enige is the way to go but if you find one with a e6 350, i wouldn't rule it out, the little mack engine pull dang good when they are geared right, may not pass a kw with a cat in it on the interstate but you will get there!!

  4. We have a 97' that has done this since new. Had it looked at a few times when it was new, nobody seemed to worried about it then. Had 2 other 97's that did it too. -Brad

    Thanks storkmack, this makes me feel a little better, it was 20 degres here yesterday morning and it crank up and died once then it ran rough at a high idle and lots of smoke for a half a minute or so then smooth out like always. I have a freind of mine that hauls coal with a 97 that has a e-7 350 in it and he said he has never had a problem like this not sure if his has the same set up as mine it may be the old style e 7 but i don't thank it should do this but it run fine when it smooths out.

I listen to him everyday on a local radio station, i tell you it brung a tear to my eyes hearing him again, and his way of showing people the truth!! miss old Paul, rest in piece.

Just letin you all know the mack is doing good, other than the start up in the mornings, i was grossing about 90,000 with her the other day and she pulled fine, never got below 6th on some narrly hills, just wish i could get the cold starting problem fixed thanking of trying a new econovance and trying to see if it helps, don't know what else it could be.. and thanks for all the replys this site is full of info and people that have been around a block or two in a mack, thanks!

  7. Same thing with a 1998 E7-400 here and another guy in the forum had the exact same problem. So far nobody has figured it out for a true "fix' I replaced the econovance with no help. If your truck starts and doesnt cut out or lose power when warmed up your econovance isnt due for a replacement yet.

    I am about a year on the heavy smoke at startup and rough running until it 'clears up'

    how much did the econovance cost you, i have replaced the injector pump and injectors, for other reasons and it did not help the problem, the only other thing i could thank of would be bad fuel lines or a fuel leak some were leting the fuel drine back
  8. im kinda having this same issue,,starts with a few puff of smoke then smoothens right out in a few seconds...my trucks pulls really strong but now im only getting 24lbs of boost(96 E-7 mack dumptruck 454hp)...the trucks just dont sound right under heavy loads,,like a cylinder is weak..would smoke sometimes during normal driving at around 1200rpm range ,,if you go full throttle the smoke would go away..i took the sensor and the econovance off the injector pump and inspected both,,i messed with the harness for the injector pump and the truck stopped the smoking while driving..im wondering if the lil shaft that rest on the econovance solenoid isnt worn or sometime inside where that shaft goes is worn

    My truck does 30 or better of boost, you could have a small leak in the air to air, or a small fuel leak somewere, but it could be the econvance which i thank is what is wrong with mine but i never notice any smoke driving it but you could have some wear issues like you said but it would still have the boost i thank even if the timming was addvanced.

    yes that is how they were built in the 70's, they also had some that the muffler in the front bumber, My wifes uncle drove one that had a 318 and a 13 speed, he gave up a cabover with a bunk for a day cab with a 318, the cabover had a 238 he said he thougth he was chicken haulin with the big 318!!
  10. Yea like mack mhe9 said you my be able to get some aftermarket parts to beef it up but i have never heard of big bore or stroker kits for the macks, but some turbo and fuel system up grades can help and you could do some software upgrades on the ecm. good luck

Truck runs great now, i belive the pump has been week since we got it, but went to do the over head and found #4 vavle spring broke, and the jake head had the flat springs broke off laying in the head, and the master piston had feel out, has anyone ever changed a spring without pulling the head we were thanking about trying to use air to hold the vavle up will this work on the engine, and why would the pring just be broke. It broke at the top coil. And thanks everyone for the advice, i love this page!!

Please dont stick your thumb over fuel line that s not the best thing to do but it does sound like the delivery valve is down, . there is a special tool to remove it the spring valve and barrel washer are all under it if the spring and valve are broken they can be replaced on the truck if it is any deeper pump will need to come off

    I could tell by the amount of fuel it was spraying that there was some thing wrong, i had a pair of leather gloves on, just incase. I was told it took 2200 psi to open the injectors, and i am sure it was no were near this, it also made a tapping sound when you broke the number 5 line at the pump, thanks for all the addvice

Ok everyone, today i checked the injector lines and they were good, i pulled the # 5 and #4 injector and swaped holes just to see if the miss went to #4, it stayed at #5, also took the lines off and tigthed it back on the pump on #5 and pointed it out away from the truck, it did not look like there was as much fuel coming out of it as the others, and i could hold my tumb over the end of the line and stop the fuel, i tryed this with the others and i could not stand to hold my tumb over it more than a secound. I checked the rocker arms and they all moved fine when the engin was running, do you all thank it is the barrel on the #5 in the pump or what and if anyone could post pictures of the pump break down it would be help ful to me

  14. if it is the cam or vavle train i will get road hard over it if it is on the exhaust side, a guy i run with sometimes give me down the road because if the engine is warm and runing i have the jake on, and he want hardly use his he says they tear up the engines, but i have never had any issues out of this and i thank they are the best thing they ever came out with on a truck, and if they were that bad they would not even put them on a truck, and a mack dosen't have much of one anyway.

  15. Just a thought but my E6 had #5 lifter take out the cam had a hell of a miss.Good luck

    I hope it is not that bad, it could be just as simple as a blocked fuel line to a bad cam, if i take the covers off i will crank it over and wacth the rocker arms, that should be the way to check that out.
  16. Have seen delivery valve come apart once and the broken pieces block the line at cap and line connection have also seen where someone have removed injectors without backing the fuel lines out smashing the end of the line over.

    Thanks everone, i am going to tear into it one day this week and i will post what i find and thanks again for the post, i will check that stuff frist.
  17. I think every 44 camelback I have ever had has had the light weight hop, is it an automatic power divider or air shift? does it have the shocks on the front axle? I know an auto pwr divider can pop in and out in a turn when the axles are turning at different speds and that leads to the hop when empty, the shocks on the front of one of mine stopped it almost completely thats why I was looking for the numbers again this truck has auto pwr divider and its hopping in turns empty so I want em on it.

    Yeap it has the shocks on the front rear, but they are probley bad, thanks i was just wordering about the hop and it does have the auto lock.
  18. ok guys i need some addvice, my 98 e-7 454 all of a sudden started missing. It does not smoke just a dead miss, i craked the injector lines at the pump and # 5 is the miss, now it does not smoke, no blowby and no knocks or funny sounds it is just like the injector is not poping at all, were would you guys start, any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  19. I have a EM6 300 with over 500k on it that I know of. When I lug it down to 1100 rpms, the oil pressue is maybe 30psi. Has anyone used straight weight oil (like 30w) in their engines? I live in CT but don't use it after November. The straight weight oils really keep the 2cycle Detroits together.

    I have a e 7 454 that only has 12 15 psi at 600 rpm hot, and maybe 30 at 1100, i would run 15w40 and put some lucas in with it.
  20. Its the old style with blocks atached to the frame of the truck and walking beam under. This is the first mack ive seen with th uh s style. Seen lots of fords with it.

    That suspension holds up very well, but if you run over a #57 gravel you sure know it, but with a good heavy load they ride a little better.
  21. Well there you go drivers complain about everthing, and if they are nothing to complain about they can come up with something. My mack the ch has the 44 camel backs withe the bronze busings and i notice when empty like turn a hard turn like getting on the interstate it feels like it hops in the rear in when turn hard either way, now i checked the travel on the rearends when i had it loaded by backing up and turning it hard to the left, now in my experince this is the best way to check for bushing trouble get it loaded and tirn it hard to the right and stop and get out and see how much the axles walk out, now i counldn't tell that it had any at all, why does it feel like it hops in the rear when empty

I have a buddy that always say's it ain't a truck unless it is big ugly and yellow under the hood, i aways say what about beige and ugly!! he gets pissed when i say that, or black with a red top!! Jumperand son you are detriot crazy i guess, but pick one over a cat, man you must really like them, or maybe you haven't got the chance to crusie one down the road with a heavy wagon hooked to it, you would like them then, or maybe you like picken at everone just to keep things interesting!! We all like the old detriot a little bit we are just ashamed to admit it, like a hobby truck with a big loud v8 and a 13 speed 4.11 ratio, and lots of smoke, without a wagon to drive around town on the weekends, that would be a little fun and you would for sure make the people next door mad.
