  2. Prolly showing my age,and i DO appreacieate modern power steering,but i always thought (still do now) that you get a better "feel" of the road with manual steering,and i also think EVERYONE who wants to drive a truck should learn to back-up with manual steering,would sure eliminate a lot of the "30 day driving school wonders" i share the road with now!...............Mark

    :twothumbsup: True that!!!

    Just about the first time they let the wheel return to center after completing a turn. Some of these fresh trucking school graduates might take a couple times however......

    Hi all;

    Hey,on another Forum I was told by several other members that installing radial tires on my ol' '54 GMC 2 ton would be courting tire failures. According to them,as I understand their stance,having Radials (9.00R-20's,in this case) on a truck that gets infrequent use will cause the tires to rot from within and cause them to blow out within 3 years. apparently,with Bias ply tires,extended sitting,as in storage,results in "flat spotting" which works itself out over a few miles,but Radials in this circumstance results in explosions or throwing of tread,or both. This is news to me-have you guys heard of this problem? One gentleman in particular referenced SEVERAL cases where his commercial trucks were experiencing blow outs at an alarming rate,apparently regardless of brand. I asked if maybe it was an air pressure or overloading issure rather than the Radial tires being the cause,and was "politely" told that he'd been running trucks most of his life and knew how to check tire pressures and load trucks properly. Anyway,I stopped short of raising the BS flag,but it seems like with that kind of self-destruction rate,the DOT would red flag Radials on OTR trucks.

    I'm currently puttinf a deal together with a man on still a different Forum for six very low miles 9.00R-22.5's on recently powder coated wheels that will fit my '54. I might not be doing 500 miles a day with full loads on 'em,but I DO plan to be making occasional runs to Reno with moderate loads and/or a trailer at the speed limit (or slightly over),so better-than-typical tires will be a worthy investment.

    BTW-I'm also working on getting "RE-MACK"ed. Don't wanna jinx the deal,though,I'll post pics if/when it's done.

    Hi all;

    I'm offering my 1957 GMC F350 flatbed/dump truck for sale.

    I recently swapped a Chevy 292 six into it,but the original 270 can go with it if desired.

    It has an SM420 4 speed and electric 1350 2 speed axle,and 9.00-22.5's. Runs,drives and stops but needs some work to be put on the road. Steel deck dump bed works well. Clear Nv. title.

    Asking $1,500.00 OBO for it.

    Call or email for more details.

    I used one like that first pic but without the top for a while at a paving outfit I did tires for;wouldn't start without jumpers from the service truck,had absolutely the HARDEST steering of anything I've ever driven. Half the time I had to back up and re-angle to get it around a corner. I only used it to set the bucket on truck wheels when I inflated the tires before (and after) the welder finally made me a tire cage out of re-bar.(!!)

    Anyway,it seemed to run good and worked okay for loading trucks etc. if the operator had REALLY strong arms,which I didn't. (That is what taught me to let the machine do the work,but this thing-might have been worth red-tagging it until the P/S worked.)

    You said something about a drum with a heavy spot,but without the drum it still does it? I'd think THAT'S your problem.

    Maybe if you find the place that hub and drum settles to,re-install the wheel and add a few ounces of wheel weights to that wheel at the top,opposite the "heavy side",and try it-see if anything changes. Might have to adjust the amount of weight to counterbalance the heavy side. Or,If you could borrow a different hub to try for a couple of miles that might tell you if the hub is the problem-maybe it's machined wrong or has a casting flaw that upsets the balance.

  7. Rob;

    Glad you're not hurt too bad,sorry for your loss though. I always thought a two ton Dodge from the 40's or 50's would be cool with a V-10 and 5 speed. (Actually,the idea at first included a '51 GMC 2 ton I had a shot at for near nuthin.) I suspect the total weight would be close to the same,but you might need to add a Brownie w/overdrive to get decent road speed and mileage.

  8. You can probably either find a use for the railroad wheels &etc. or scrap 'em and get some of your purchase price back. That truck will be a hard worker for you. Even when you flog 'em to death,they'll keep working. My best friend used to say that to drive something with a Dee-troit in it,it's necessary to get in the proper frame of mind;he suggested slamming your hand in the door....

    Mark;

    Depends on what "bringing it back" means to you. It'd probably be expensive to make it nice again,true,but maybe not so bad to make it a decent runner/driver. And once the drivetrain's good,a guy can drive it,put it to work,or whatever,and work on the rest of it as time and money come available. I smile just as wide seeing an old beater going down the road as I do seeing a fully restored one. You have to consider the "fun per buck" factor.
