gear ratios:gas vs diesel

I saw awhile back where if for instance you want to swap a 707 gas with a 673 diesel (or later maxidyne) you should change the rear end gears. I know the gas revs higher than the diesel. would it matter whether you use an automatic or manual tranny? I'm more interested with top speed (highway) than low-end performance.

Style of transmission wouldn't matter.

Look for a ratio such as 3.71, 4.00, or 4.25 for better highway speed for a diesel application with a direct high gear trans. Lower rear gears can work if using an overdrive trans.

It doesn't cost anything to pay attention.
