Good evening guys!  have trouble shifting in to 8/4 hole on my 9 speed,  kinda new to shifting this trans but I believe im shifting it right. all other gears and spliter work fine. Is there anything I can look for in the top cover or rear case?  I also noticed and few clutch housing bolts missing along with some loose.  the rear main is leaking pretty good so I plan on pulling it out anyway and checking the clutch.  The 9 speed is on a 1986 superliner with and 350 E6. Any input would help!

Thanks Guys.

Pull the shift cover and check the set bolt in the 4th-8th shift fork..  it will also be a good time to inspect the rails, detents and poppets as well.

Finally got around to pulling the top cover off.  I have attached a parts diagram to help me explane what I found.  when looking over the top cover I found #20 and #21 super loose witch was causing a lot of play in what I believe to be the shift fork for 4/8 gear. About a 1/4" to be exact on the end of the shift fork. when I flipped the cover over the nut #17 that holds the bolt #21 in had backed out and almost fell off. do you guys think this could cause the 4/8 syncro gear to not engage? I have also attached a pic of what I think the 4/8 syncro gear seems a little ground down but do think it will still work? whay should there torque spec be for the #17 nut? and what else should I be checking?   sorry for all the qestions thanks everyone!

Your doing good.  Is the trans still in the truck ? The 4th-5th sliding clutch is worn badly and is easy to replace with trans out. The synchro is in the back box.

currently the trans is in the truck but will be pulling it out due to a pretty bad rear main leak.  4th and 5th or 4th and 8th?

The small gear between the speed gears is called a sliding clutch. It is not a synchronizer. The synchronizer in that trans is in the rear box and looks like a large 2 sided motorcycle clutch.  With the Trans out and up on its nose, you can take it apart without special tools. Do you have the book?

I do not have a book but I will be ordering one tonight, ebay has them.1984 should be the same as 1986? I will also find a book for the clutch as well

The clutch is in the book. I have 3 sets of driveline books. If you need a newer version, I can sell them cheap. IE: a T-2090 book. $50, shipping included..
