On my 1984 300 engine the oil level shows full with the engine cold first thing in the morning.  Reinsert the dipstick and the level is half way between add and normal. Leave the dipstick in for about an hour and remove it, and it will show full again.  Which is the correct reading? Yes it’s on level ground and yes the dipstick is fully inserted. I have checked the oil hundreds of times in machines and I have never seen this happen before.

The oil returns are fine. This is a situation that happens in the morning or any time of the day. Leave the dipstick in, let all the oil run down, and pull the dipstick out.  It will show over full. Reinsert the dipstick after wiping it off and it will show a gallon lower when you pull it back out.  I just changed the oil. I drew out 52 quarts of oil. I recently purchased this truck. Has the truck been overfull the entire time from the previous owner? It doesn’t make sense that it would be a different reading 10 minutes apart.
