Funny story About the Rd Mack

About 11 years ago. I bought a Caterpillar 325L excavator, after purchasing it, I started digging a pond on our farm. I was digging with the 325 and pushing the dirt with a D7e. My dad told me my uncle had a Rd Mack that had been turned over and the engine and drive train was good but the cab was totally ruined and mashed flat, and that I would have to replace the cab. And moving the dirt by truck would make more sense. After receiving the truck from my uncle. I started to think maybe, I could drive the truck on the farm before changing the cab? But the cab was flat with no way to get in and steer the truck, my bright idea was to get behind the truck with the excavator use the bucket to pull the cab top high enough for me to drive it, so thats what I did and it worked well. I finished the pond an used the truck without doors windows.

A few weeks later a rumor circulated around our small town, and it went like this. " Did you see what Kevin did trying to learn how to use that new excavator he just bought? I drove by and saw him tear a cab off a new mack truck with his bucket, someone had to have got hurt" We all had a good laugh. You have to love a small town.

By the way did not run it without the airfilter breather, that was taking off after it was but in mothballs.

In the 70's I bought an R- Model tractor that had been used inside a chemical co plant since new. The truck had quite possibility the rustiest cab I had ever seen,yet the odometer showed maybe 30K miles, which I knew to be correct cause the truck had never been licensed for the road.

Once we had the truck at my shop, just to prove a point, I got inside the cab and put my back against the headliner and pushed..... Needless to say but the whole roof came off and we used it that way as a "convertible"spotter truck to move trailers in and out of the shop until a suitable donor cab became available.

The speculation about how this R-Model became "topless" ran the gamut from "It must've been going down the road and got caught in a crosswind" to "Mack just don't build em like they used to." or "did the driver get killed"?Plus countless more, but it most always drew some kind of comment from everyone who saw it , Macks have always rusted but this one was in a category all it's own!
