  1. not sure if it's a 51 or 55, I'm not having any success in loading apicture of it here. But, I do thank You for the advice.
  2. I don't know if the A model 's have any singnificant rareity or if they are just equally rare as anything else anymore that's not a B model. IT's a s ingle axle, with duplex, or tri plex trans. It has some obvious rust, and a few dents , but it's all there, but, without a title.. I am told that the fellow pull started it and it did crank up, but the clutch was froze to the flywheel, so he threw in neutral , and then shut it down shortly after.. I'm trying to learn what a bare bones / keep it from going to the scrap yard fair price would be . any help on this is appreciated.
  3. there should be a lock bolt on each of the hinges that hold the pin in place. Just be cautous looseneing them. Work em back and forth a littel ata time so they don't breack. after that , just pull the cotter pin, and nut off, and drive it out.You may need to use a piece of pipe a little smaller diamiter to drive it all the way out. Make sure to put grease on the entiore length of the pin when ya reasemble.
  4. Chains, bars, loader buckets, etc,. This is not wise. If you had no experience in deactivating a bomb, I think You would not attempt it. If you had no experience with nitro ,I think you would not play with it. If you had no experience in flying a plane or helicoptor, I think You would not attempt it. If you had no experience jumping off a cliff, I think you would not jump . If you have no experience with Women, don't get married. If you value your family, your arms , your legs ,your eyes, your neck,your brain ,YOUR LIFE, and You have no experience with split rim/lock ring type tire/rim/wheel assemblies , PLEASE...don't take a foolish chance . Hire a trained shop or mobile tire service tech to do the job for you. This not like trying to fly a kite , or drive a two stick transmission, or trouble shoot an elctrical system. One error, one mistake, one foolish oversight , AND YOU ARE GOING TO BE DIS-FIGURED FOR LIFE OR KILLED DEAD.

Let me say that I spent over 25 years in the tire industry, and have extensive experience in every aspect, from construction to serviceing tires/rims from wheel burrow on up to aircraft, and virtually everything in between. The pressure inside a tire is capable of doing as much damage as dynamite. Do not attempt airing multi piece rims/wheels with out proper training. Placing a chain around the tire /rim assembly may containe the assembly while airing, but I've seen these assmblies come apart after the airing process. Tightening the mounting lug nuts can create enough flex in the assembly if it is not pefectly assembled to come apart in a massive explosion. This is a lethal explosion with enough power to cause fatal damage to the human body. If you are wanting to stay with the origanal equipment tube type tire look ( 10:00x20 ) or (10:00 x 22), Then You should take these assemplies to a comercial tire center, which you should expect to pay no more than $40.00 per dismount/mount. These multi piece rim/wheel assemblies may be rusted some, have hairline cracks, etc, and it would be very unadvisable for you to attempt changing these type of split rims if you have no experience with them. The cost is justified by possibly saving your life or limb. TAKE NOTE !!!! The amount of energy power inside that tire when airing = the amount of square inches inside the tire x the nuber of pounds of air installed , psi = pounds per sqaure inch. This equasion should tell you that you have a bomb in the making, and it will kill you given a chance. On the other hand, if you are just looking to put some rubber on the truck and being era correct is not an issue, do as another suggested here, and go to the (11x22.5 ) bias ply tire, or the (11 R x 22.5) radial ply tire and sinlgle piece tubless assembly. You should expect to pay no more than $50.00 each for the used tubless wheels, or around $100.00 for new ones These tubless rims are not multi piece, and so long as the bead area is lubricated prior to airing, they are very safe , even for the novice tire man. As the other man suggested, you will needs to be certain that the rim spacers bands that is adequate to allow for proper tightening of the lug nuts. You can buy these spacers new for under $50.00 each, or you can use longer wedges .
  6. I think the horse man opened with that 49.00 price, and he sais someone bid a dollar 30 seconds before the closeing bell rang. We may never know. I agree with your statement about "amazing humans". When I saw that print on there I decided I would not participate in the bidding. He certainly knows how to deflate interest in his product. It's a shame, what happens when greed takes over. As for his claimed $200.00 offer ? I doubt that existed. As for my offer of hundred dollars ? After that print showed up on line ...well that ended my offer of a hundred dollars in my mind. After the auction I sent him an email with three potential options. 1st, I suggested he could be a real hero and ship the box to you as a gift. 2nd, I suggested he could sell me the box for the $50.00 bucks that it went for on line, and I'd ship it to ya myself . 3rd, I suggested he could keep the box for himself and get a ill laugh everytime he looks at it. Whatever becomes of that box , I know I'll never forget what took place here, and I hope that horse trader never forgets either. Is it any wonder then that the values that built this Great Country we knew as " The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA " are in danger of becoming just a memory ? Joe
  7. new news from horse trader....he now tells me the $1.00 bid was not him. he states he will put the owner in contact with me if said owner pays for the box. , and so we must wait.....reguardless of the outcome though , after witnessing this saga unfold, i agree that your logic hits the bulls eye...dead on ..., the man with more greed than compassion is not much of a man at all. joe
  8. That was not my bid, it was the horse traders. I offered him a hundred for the thing before the e bay stint. I chose not to participate in the bidding. We see what happens next..lol.., I should be hearing from him . The fate of the box continues....It's kinda fun to watch this box create a little dramatic excitment for us..Hope all is well for everyone...I just picked up that "41 White " from Oregon, and am making my way back to my shop in Florida. I'm in Idaho tonite. Watch closely for the next chapter of " The Saga of the Old Wooden MACK Box"....stay tuned...lol
  9. I thank ya for that info, I thought the horse trader seemed a little on the silly side after telling him what my plans were for the thing, and the fact thats it's not a Mack product. Maybe he could put a little snake oil in the box and try to bring up the value a little ? I'm thinking that anyone here who had an interest has lost it by now . Now it's on ebay being sold as a " Vintage Mack Tool Box " . I think he comes from a long line of horse trader's .
  10. Well, the future is shakey on this box. Horse trader claims offer of two hundred . I thought he should take the two hundred, but he is going to ebay for more. I sure am curious to see what this box brings. I think it may be time for me to bow out gracefully. Can anyone tell me the value of the name plate , and does anyone have one to sell ?
  11. Thanks for the welcome all, ..I lived in West Palm for 7 years. but now have my shop in north central FLA. Near I-10 and I-75. I live in the western mountains of North Carolina, but most of my toys are at my shop , so I spend most of my free time down there. I thnk I've slept at my house in the hills less than 7 nights total last year.

Don Schumaker , Curator at Mack Museum has investigated, confirmed ,concurred , and informed. Here are the official findings and a little extra. Mack never had wooden boxes. Any Chasis tool boxes were made of steel. Hand tools that would have come with each new truck were enclosed in a cloth roll up container. The name plate is in all likelyhood original,and not made by the box craftsman. It is in fact a radiator nameplate from a Mack model ,4AB23A, and is made of 20 gauge brass plate . ( see attched drawing from Mack ) The drawing was done on January 27th, 1925, but in fact the paltes were actually already in use from earlier in the 1920's. Although the drawing calls for laquered brass finnish , in many cases the brass plate was finnished in nickel plate rather than laquer. In conclusuion, this box is not authentic vintage Mack. Howwever , ( in my opinion ) It still has great artistic value to anyone who has the Mack blood in the veins, and it stands as tribute to the man who took the time to show his appreciation for the work horse that Mack stands for. I am still hoping to obtain this unique box and do with it what I stated earlier. I'm hoping that when I inform the former Bostonian horse salesman of the the fact that the box is not a "pot of gold" that he will work with me to see that this fine peice of work ends up with a deserving and greatfull owner.   13. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx this mystery appears to be solved. i sent pics to mack museum. they suggest possibly an old retired mack fan with time on his hands made this box, and possibly even the logo. they stated that no one has any knowledge of any such box produced by mack in mack's history. they are going to look further to verify if it is even a factory mack logo plate, as they suspect it wasd made by the craftsman . i'll post that info when i receive it from the mack museum curorator. i am attempting to purchase this box and present it as a gift to who ever the members of this site elect via a private vote . i know rob is drooling over this nice piece . the problem is that the owner is an admitted former horse salessman and is driving quite a hard bargain with me. time will tell.....
  14. That would be a nine speed. .The parts are in North Florida near I-75 and I-10. I get up to PA on rare occasions. Maybe some one here has one that is closer to you ?? I have no idea what the box is worth ? Any input on this ?
  15. Hello You 'all , I have a non-turbo 673 w/ 9 speed duplex with, and turbo 673 w/15 speed triplex, and two differentials. The engines are both alledged to run, but have never cranked either of them up, but I could. I need to know if these are still around , dime a dozen. I'm getting ready to clean some stuff up, and don't want to get rid of anything that may be slim pickins and needed by someone. I have no idea as to the value of this stuff. I also have a new set of 673 injector lines w/factory screw on plug caps. and a rebuilt 673 turbo thats never been out of the rebuild bag. Also, a half dozen or so original Mack 673 oil filters in their boxes. and a 673 Mack air filter w/ o-rings, I also have an air operated tag /lift axle off a 59 Mack. If there is any interest just hollar...Thanks...Joe

  19. This is the big question. I have no problem putting the budds on if in fact they were an availiable option for that model year. If not, then I'll leave the daytons.
  20. To; Rowdy Rebel, I'm intersted in going budd so can run aluminum wheels. I've never had a budd lug nut crack , break or any other type of problem. Are you sure we are both talking about the same thing? I do thank you for replying though. If your having lugs strip or crack, I would think that your possiblty not putting enough torque when tightening them. If I'm not mistaken, I believe you should be torquing them at near 600 lbs. You may want to check that spec, for certain, but I think that is the requirement. to; Superdog, The bolt hole pattern is the same for new or old. The older lugs are just lug piloted verses the new hub piloted wheels that we use today. The only company ( to my knowledge), to build a truck with a different 10 bolt hole bolt pattern was the 1969 greyhound visualiner. They built the buses at 102 " width assuming the D.O.T. would allow that extra width when at the time 8' was the legal width. The government did not allow it at the time, and very few of that model was produced. Now we have the 102 " width as legal, and I did own one for a short time, and wanting to switch to allumnum wheels was impossible because of the larger bolt pattern and which allowed for 12:00x 20 tires . In terms of the wheel style for this H63, I would run the three piece tube type with 10:00 x 20's. It is good then hubs are availiable and that changing hubs is the only thing needed, and not the whole spindle . Does anyone know if the budd wheel was an option from MACK in 1955 ? I am really wanting to restore this truck to 1955 era. The aluminum just looks so much better in my opinion, and if it was an option back then then I will get the caliper out and put new hubs and drums on. Would anyone here have any info on who might have the 3 piece tube type aluminium wheels ? As always with this site, folks here seems more than intersted in helping a soul out with info or suggestions.. I really enjoy reading this column . Thanks again..
  21. Hello , and Happy New Year. I've seen some old macks on this site and others with budd wheels. I don't recall seeing these back in the day. Are the hubs available today, or have these owners done some major spindle fabricating to install budd hubs? I picked up an H63 and would like to put aluminum wheels all the way around if the budd hubb was a true option back then on the steer and drive axles. Any info about the budd option in 1955 and availiablity / location on these hubbs would be appreaciated. Thanks, Joe
  22. I am fairly new to this site, but not new to trucks or trucking. I'm a 50 yr old owner /operator . I 'm a one man operation. I haul heavy equipment all over the lower 48. I have a 7 axle removable goosneck set-up. I'm always intersted in helping folks when I can. I carry a million $ liabillity and $100,000.00 cargo insurance.
