  1. I am working on an A40 restoration and my cab is completely shot. I have an opportunity to buy an E series (EE or EH) with a quite good cab. I have always heard they were the same cab, just wanted to confirm with the experts that it is a bolt on swap. I know I still have a lot of work to do with air lines, cab lights, and a lot of other things, but I will at least have a base to start with. Thank you again everybody

  2. I have started doing work on the chassis of my A 40 and have found one of my front brake chambers is rotted through. Funny that the diaphragm actually held air, but the chamber is rotted through. I haven fully developed my network of parts sources, since I have just started. Does anyone know where I could find a 24" (I believe) brake chamber with the bolts around the outside. It doesn't have to be NOS, just useable. Thank you.

  3. While unsticking a governor on an EN377, I used just that little too much force and broke the shaft for the governor plate. It is a straight shaft, no holes except the two for the plate, and a slot machined into the middle for the plate to go through. The plate is 1 7/16" across and the shaft is 3/8" brass (I will check if someone has something close) I can make the length whatever I need. I hate to cannibalize a working truck, but I figure there is an old carb on someone's shelf that will have a close enough shaft. Thank you..

  4. I was not sure whether to ask this in this or the antique forum, but I have a flathead mack question. I am tearing down a stuck EN377 and got the crankshaft out and am now working on valves and pistons. My big question is the distributor drive shaft. With the oil pump off, does the shaft just lift up or is there any pin or something that holds it in? Mine is quite frozen, as in it doesn't spin, but I do not want to break anything. Thank you

  5. I am starting to pull together my A model and had a couple of questions since I started researching this site. First I read that the nose is different from different A models? The 30 is different from the 40? Is this just a trim difference or do I have to look for a A40 hood? Does this difference go over to cabs also? I read that the E series and the A series use the same cab. Is it a bolt on (as bolt on as the old iron hobby allows) replacement or are they just kind of close? Thanks guys. I do not want to waste money buying parts that do not fit.

  6. Oh I bet. They take over in no time. They are not happy about my hammering on the pitman arm right now for sure. I have to say I have the fenders and bumper off now and am thinking I could build a really cool "mack rod" open wheel roadster. I will have some pics up soon hopefully. I have never seen a steering box quite like this. There is a plate that is riveted to the frame. I think if I take the pitman arm, and there is two bolts between the steering box and the frame rails, and I am hoping the box comes off.

  7. I am taking the cab off an A40 that I want to start restoring. I am doing my best to beat the hornets who have 10 year possession of the truck, and do not want to give it up. I get little windows of opportunity before they get curious to me. I am at the point of jacking the cab, and was wondering about the steering column. Where does it split? Does it come off the top of the steering box or do I take the box off the frame? Thank you in advance.

  8. Good luck. I hate to say my experience is that these beauties are tough to find parts for. I believe that the cab is exactly the same as the E series, the nose is quite a mongrel. I do not think the power plants even interchange with other series.I have even toyed with the idea of losing the hood and fenders and making a Mack roadster for novelty (sorry purists) Mine has a blown EN377 and I want to drop a DT466 in it to modernize it. so I can use it to pull a trailer to shows. Good luck because all that said, I think they are one of the neater looking Macks out there. The first step would be Macungie if you are anywhere near it. Good luck!

  9. You guys are great. I had wondered about how much needs to be done with the rest of the driveline. I really like the A model where it is so rare, but want the ability to go a hundred miles or so to a good show. Springfield MA 2012 is my goal lol. Want to modernize it a little too with features like maxi brakes and some other safety features. I think it will be a really cool looking truck when I am done. When I bought it I had NO idea just how rare these trucks are, but it will be a real head turner at shows. Thank you again everyone.

    Hi Terry, the rear ratio does not play near the factor with the smaller diesels such as those considered as they are typically governed higher than the 2800rpm the original EN-377, and EN-401/402 series were.

    I would however still consider moving to a newer rear unit due to parts availability.

  10. Thank you for the quick response. I do not think it is a bad idea, will leave me a very (hopefully if done right) reliable truck to take to shows. That 377 Mack is as rare as they come, and the 401 I have not seen much either. The 466 would not take much cab intrusion to get in there either. Those motors are a dime a dozen. The wife will be thrilled at the prospect of another donor truck.

    The engine compartment is not long enough and would not leave you enough room in the cab if you planned to install a "doghouse". The existing duplex trans also will not bolt up to the END-673 series engine due to SAE flywheel housing size difference.

    Your best bet, (my opinion) would be to install either a Cummins B5.9, or International Dt-466 if you wanted to go with a diesel. Either of these were available with the SAE #2 flywheel housing and should bolt up. You would need to fabricate/modify front and rear mounts for the engine to frame. You could also install an EN-401/402 series gasoline engine with as they are the same externally and is a straight bolt in option. This would however leave you with the same unavailability of parts.

  11. I have an A40 which I am getting ready to start tinkering with. I have a blown piston which the last owner began tinkering with, but he got started on and left the head off. Now it has been a dozen years with the head off etc. we will call the motor restoration hopeless. Even if I did get it back up and running, hunting for parts for an EN377 is about the same as looking through the trash for a winning lottery ticket. I would like to use this as a show commuter, and really would prefer a diesel. My question is, would a 673 fit into the engine compartment? It looks like it would have the height, but would it be long enough. I know the purist will hate me, but you cannot knock the availability and the toughness of that old motor. And would the ten speed duplex match right up to that motor or would I need a new tranny too. Thank you.
