  1. Thanks. Sounds like I've been checking where I should be. It would really hurt to have a costly repair and down time because of lack of maintenance.
  2. Thank you. It's a 1987 RW613 with a E9 400 and a Mack 12 speed transmission. I bought it last winter and started running it full time in June. It would bury the speedometer, when it was working lol. It could pull a little harder but has enough get up to keep me smiling. I'm sure there's a lot I could go over on the engine to improve it but right now I'm just trying to keep it earning. I found what I think is a 1984 RWL722 sitting in a field. Same motor. They parked it because of a broken frame. It came with the factory dual stacks and I'm in the process of putting the driver side one on my 87.
  3. I started getting a noise out of the front differential. I was told it was rebuilt not too long before I bought the truck. I talked to the guy that owned it before me and he said there were two reservoirs above the check bolt on the sump(?)that I should have been checking. I put around 20,000 miles on it in the last year and checked at the sump a couple times. The oil level was where it should be.
  4. Thank you. This will help a lot!
  5. I have been checking the oil at the bottom of the ball. Someone told me that there's two other places higher up on the rears I should be checking to. Anyone know where?
  6. Thank you. I'm no mechanic. After years of working for other guys I was able to buy my own truck last year. She's old, but she's a Mack. I have enough experience driving but not too much keeping them running. This site and you have been a gift from God. Kinda like a neighbor who wrenched on them back in the 80's. Thank you for all the advice!
  7. Thanks. Mine is a RW613 and I have an opportunity to buy a RWL722LST as a parts truck. The guy said it was an 88 but the tag on the engine said 84. They both have the E9 400. Am I wrong to think that things like the door hinges, exhaust/muffler mounts, wiper motor, air horns and cab lights are interchangeable?
  8. I have an 1987 Super Liner. The driver side door drops down about 1/2 " when I open it. I'm guessing its something in the hinges worn out. Can I swap the hinges out of another door to correct it?
  9. I've only had the truck for a year so I don't know how old the components all are. I can get a cable from mack. $62. I'll start there and see what available as far as the drive/ratio adapter is available. Thanks for all the info guys.
  10. There's kinda of a collar on the back of the speedo that I can spin with my fingers and it reads on the gauge. If the cable in the cab spins with the drill on the transmission end but not going down the road hooked up, I probably should start there, shouldn't I? I can't think of a way to see if the pin on the transmission drive is turning driving down the road. My luck the speedometer head went bad along with the drive. Its not really making sense to me.
  11. I had my girlfriend in the cab watching the speedometer. She said she could hear something moving in there. I thought the same thing and pushed it in as far as I could. The speedometer end of the cable and where it plugs into the speedo look a little worn but hard to tell because I don't know what a new one looks like. I would think the first thing I need to do is get the end in the cab spinning going down the road. I'll see if I can get a ratio adapter from mack on Monday and go from there. Thank you.
  12. lIt still has the pin. Another guy suggested chucking up a cordless drill to the cable. The end in the cab rotates whether chucked to the pin or the cable itself. When its hooked to the speedometer and turned with the drill I get nothing. Not sure if the drill isn't turning fast enough to register or if two things went out at the same time. On the transmission mine screws into something like what you have pictured. I have a 1987 Super liner. Is it just as simple as unbolting and replacing that? Does oil pressure spin that pin? Thanks for the input.
  13. I unhooked the speedometer cable from the back of the gauge and down below from the rear of the transmission. The cable turns in the cab when I spin it from underneath. When I hook up the end to the transmission and leave the gauge end unhooked, the cable doesn't spin when going down the road. Is there something I can replace were the cable screws into the transmission? When I took that end off a little bit of oil ran out.
  14. Thanks. Could the tach drive have another name? I'm not finding anything when I search it.
  15. I'll try that. I had it unhooked and started up the truck. The shaft in the pump wasn't turning.
  16. I have a 1987 E9 400 and the tach quit working. Mine connects on top of the motor. I disconnected the cable. The cable is a male end with a key molded into it. It slides into a shaft with a notch for the key. Should the shaft spin when the engine is running?
