  1. Hey Rob Thanx for the timely reply, I was wondering then If I was able to get a different Flywheel that would work with the single disk?? I guess thats somthing Im gonnna have to do more searching on to see about finding one. I know these L-10 are really popular, lots of parts,,,etc. but I wonder if I could just need to find the Push type cluch pressure plate, then couldnt I just use the single disk??.. I phisically picked this engine cause of its basic size, almost that of the Thermo. But that leads me to wonder about the other trucks, the b73's etc that have the 855 block cummins in them,? guess there just that much older than these. Ive gotta think some one has done this...

    Robert

I know the input shafts are different between the dual and single disc clutch. Thus is why i am wanting to find a single disc plate for my single clutch if not then will have to find something else. what do you think, any other ideas?

  2. In all probabilities you have an SAE #1 flywheel housing on your existing engine, (Thermodyne). An L-10 engine will physically bolt up as long as it has the appropriate SAE #1 clutch housing, the problem is the clutch. If your truck has a single plate clutch, (push type) the input shaft will most likely be incorrect as the L-10 engines that I've seen use a dual plate "pull style" clutch setup.

It can be made to work but you may need a different input shaft for the transmission and they can be expensive and difficult to locate.

  3. HI all, has anyone Heard of Or know Anyone that has installed a Cummins L10 engine in Place of the thermodyne diesel..

Also does anyone know if the Quadraplex 20spd, Will bolt up to the Cummins bell housing Or what to get to make this work.

I wanna Upgrde to a newer engine that is easyier to get parts for Here. I understand that I will have to refit all mounts and linkages etc etc.. I wanna get beyond that part and see if this thing is doable with my current set up.

    Thank you

    Regards

  4. I walk up to my shop this evening and habitually check the UPS box that resides next to the personell door. In the box is a cardboard box that has no return address upon it and is addressed to me. With all the things I order online in support of the shop, I think nothing of this so I set it on a truck frame and open it. To my surprise, here is a photo of the contents of the box:

You see, everytime she comes to the shop she walks through saying and pointing, "Junk that one, and that one, and that one, etc....

Having heard enough of this nonsense, I told her I was gonna park one of those Mack trucks up her ass cause it would fit!!

Guess I need to "eat some words" when she comes home.

    Rob

yeah Rob eating some words at this point wouldnt be a bad idea, maybe even a lil lovin on momma wouldnt hurt as to what ya got sitten there on that truck frame rail... Or the next time youll have a box with a picture of the parts that Could be in there iffin ya dont (yer nuts). LOL

  5. Hey Rob,

Thanks for the reply. My backing plates are cast steel. I believe the rears are 38,000 but not sure. How does one determine that on these old rears? I'm pretty new to this game in case you cant tell! Thanks for the help.

This is where Im at too Mine are 38's Im gonna do a compleate retro job on the brakes found a doner for al the newer brakes( maxi's) all bolt on stuff so am going that route, gonna be nice having 4 maxi's to hold her on Hills we have here. simple to hook up too. only thing is I wonder if the front axle Budd Hubs from a b73 later model will fit my 58 b63 california spoke spindles, if so then Ill go that route as well. then can put on the super single budd Alcoa wheels on front. 6. Hey guys who or where do I go for rebuild kits for the END 673, mine is not turboed. my serial number is

    END673 224-96 ?

I can find the kits for the engines with the 2" wrist pin (piston pin) but nothing for the smaller Pin engines. mine is 1.62" Part numer 182GC 1335 A..? At least thats what my book says, havent tore it apart yet to know forsure. Ill prolly have to I guess...

anyways I thought I found the kit once but now I find that its only with the 2" pin. so Now Im lost....

    Robert.

  7. It's a TRQ72. Single overdrive quad box.

The TRQ 720, 7210, and 7220 would be the double overdrive versions of the quad box, with main direct in 4th.

Thats right it is a TRQ72 as it says in my build sheet.

so 55 is it Ive done some other figuring but thats what I come out with to9Thanx to those that pointes me in the right direction, and thats with 1100x24.5 tires.

cause the 1100x20 is the same height right? 43.3 or so inches in dia. thats what it says it came with 1100x20s. when I bought it has 1000x20s so there going bye bye anyways, in favor of new Budd disk steels with new tubless highway traction radials.

anyways thank you for all your guys input well taken and appreciated..

  8. Robert,

I'll see if I can put my excel spreadsheet into words...

    If you want to get speed in miles per hour, MPH;

    1. start with this: rpm (revs per minute) * 60 (minutes per hour) gives engine revolutions per hour

    2. then this: tire diameter (inches) *3.14159 => this gives the tire circumference

    3. divide the tire circumference by: 12 (inches per foot) * 5280 (feet per mile) => gives the tire circumference in miles instead of inches!

    4. now multiply the transmission ratio by the differential ratio (engine rev / driveline rev * driveline rev / wheel rev)

    multiply items 1 and 2 together, then divide by items 3 & 4;

    For your truck, this becomes: MPH=(2100rpm*60)*(43.1*3.14159) / (12*5280*5.77*0.85) = 55mph.

Not your 60mph quite cruising speed, but pretty respectable. I know I don't want to hit 70mph in my old dumptruck!

Just for grins, I looked at gearing and torque. Assuming an ENDT673 puts out 600 ft-lbs, your low end gearing of 18.96, your tire size (I assumed 43.1"), and good traction, you can put 6334 pounds of force to the ground! That's almost 800 pounds of force per tire from 1422ft-lbs of torque applied to each tire! OK, enough is enough, the geek engineer in me is starting to come out!

Hope you have fun with your truck!

    Scott

your a genius.. keep the geekyness coming,

thank you for the help. Im sure that the 55 is good enough at least I know it will do that much all day long and never miss a beat,

  9. Robert,

SWD57 is a 38,000 lb bogie. It sounds like you have a transmission that is direct in 5th. The build sheet should tell you what model you have. There are some good road speed calculators on the web that will answer all your gear/ rpm/ tire size questions, do a search and find one you like. Steve

Well there not as strong as I was Hoping. but that'll do. there 5.77 ratios, and far as the tranny, it says Its DIRECT in 5th Direct, but in 5th Hi-split its .85 final. so guessing its an overdrive tranny.

  10. Hey guys got my info from Mack and was wondering how to decifer the gvw rating of the rear axles,

I know the front is 12000 lbs, its a FA522 but Im not sure on the rears.. they are,, SWD57's...?? whats the rating on them also there ratios are 5.77 and according to my booklet information on my build sheet, the lo-lo 1st gear ratio is get this!! 18.96!!??

theres some stump pullin gears in this thing LOL

my 5th hi-split is .85 guess that would be the overdrive..?it has the Quadraplex.. just wondering how to tell what the final drive gearing would be and about what speed it should have at engine gov, 2100...or cruising ,,round here thats 60mph. with 1100x20 tires. thankx guys I know someone will be able to help me out or where to look.

    thanks

    Robert.

  11. Glad you were able to get that task accomplished. I was starting to get confused as to my own identity. I do however, confuse easily.

You see Barry is not such a bad guy, just not as lovable as me. He even let you keep your avatar.

  12. B) Ok fellas. Barry came through again!! so I changed my USER NAME to ARCTICMACK. just like my email on here as well.

  13. Moving right along, eh Rob?

Sounds like you got a real keeper. Once you get it in tip top shape, you can bring it over to my house and drop it off? LOL!!

Purple super clean I think is the name of a cleaner, or super clean.

its an acidic cleaner that works great that Ive used before with nice results but as with any acidic cleaner make sure you NUTRALIZE it with baking soda.

lick Chuck said as well. that stuff will eventually eat the liners. then you get sonic Pitting and thats bad.

    Robert.

  14. Hey Rob, Welcome to BMT. I didnt get to spend much time in Fairbanks, but I lived in AK for 'round about 8 years, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Nome, Kotzebue, all over the place, absolutely loved it up there. Hell my Dad, who just passed recently, lived out in Chicken for a long time....beautiful country, great people - Now I live in the Peoples Republik of Massachusettes and let me tell you I can not wait to get back to AK. Take care, Rick

Well thats Cool Rick. I have lived All Over the South East Panhandle been in alaska for over 14 years now. But thats one place I havent been yet is Chicken.. Ya know how it got its name right??????

well for those that dont.. This is true story..

the old timers in the gold rush that went over there was gonna name it Ptarmigan (after the state bird)BUT the truth of it is. the old timers couldnt settle on how it was spelled.

So they just gave up and called it CHICKEN... that is a true story.

Its just kinda Like Prudhoe Bay.. its not the name of the (town)/ Community) up there,, as if it were even a town But the Real name is DEAD HORSE. thats the Name of the Post Office there, Dead Horse Alaska. Prudhoe Bay is Actually the name of the near by BAY ofcourse. and they Dubbed the area the Prudhoe Bay Oil Field. here is a interesting Link for those that are interested.
