  1. Some applications use a spacer between the starter and flywheel housing. It is no fun to remove the new starter because the spacer is still on the old one. At least try to measure as best you can to see if it should work. I like the Denso but don't know about that on your application. The last core charge I saw on a reman MT40 was only $10.
  2. 427 Macks are pretty tough but the early ones had some cam problems. The Cat will probably walk the dog on your Mack a little if all other factors are equal. Dog should be more economical. If I found a 2001 with documented 296,000 miles at a good price I would just have to buy it. Just wave every day when you go past that broke down emission junk even if you are not king of the hill. Some of your questions are hard to answer in a way most people can relate to. The Mack is a semi long stroke engine compared to bore. A long stroke engine will work its heart out for you. Its heart is big so it can do that for a long time. Popping johns ( two cylinder John Deers ) helped make America. A G model was 36 HP at 1750? 413 CID two cylinder. It would run a baler rated for 60HP minimum almost forever. So if a pick up truck diesel can be cranked up to 1,000 HP and be driven all over the country why don't we just put them in all our big trucks? It will increase pay load. Because they do not have the heart. JMHO We do not know what the Cat is in or how it is speced. 3406's are good engines.
  3. I do not know a number right off but a Delco MT 40 large drive 11 tooth is highly likely. The solenoid is kind of rectangular. You need to count the teeth as some dogs had 12 teeth. A MT 42 ( round solenoid ) will also bolt in the same place but has core issues if not the same. If the drive and the solenoid are not oriented the same as your old one just take the the allen screws out of the noise and make it so. Some older stuff had MT50's which looked just like the 40's but the motor was larger in diameter. Not needed with todays batteries. There were also some odd balls out there like Leece Neville and ? They will interchange. There is some newer gear reduction stuff that will bolt up also but some are pricey. Hope I have not led you astray as that is a bit older then the fleet trucks I worked on. However I thank they are the same. You can look at those units on line and have a good idea if it is the same as yours.
  4. I only ever did one unit injector Mack camshaft. Buy yourself a book and go to the school of hard knocks. A case of liquor may help and best used as medicine after the job while licking your wounds. The local Mack dealer had closed up and parts came from across the state. They were very helpful and I could talk to the guy it the shop if I had a question. There is a lot of stuff to them lining up roller lifters and possibly pulling heads due to guide plate problems and such. That cam is a big boy. I did not spring for the Mack lifter holders and bought big pencil magnets instead. The clothes pin would not hold them up as on some other engine I did that with. Reinforced them with rubber bands to make them stronger. The last question I asked was what is book time on that? Oh about 40 hours. Wow I have more like 80 in it. You will get better after about your first hundred. The early E7's had cam problems and it was that trucks second cam at 500.000 miles. Just saying not a job for the meek. Now you can all laugh at me and tell me I am wrong. I am used to that. I am married.
  5. It is an AC the company purchased about a year ago. Local agricultural work and only about 15,000 miles per year. Looked at the transmission today and it is water cooled. Fluid looked a bit questionable. Decided to park in overnight and recheck it in the morning. Thought I had attached pictures and struggling a bit to figure out this sight. Thanks for answering a puppy. Puppy Poster That is kind of funny!
  6. Hi all I am new here. A friend sent me. A company I work for has an 05 Mack with the plastic coolant tank with two caps. The bottom cap has oil snot on it. The top cap has what looks like soot. When it is put on cardboard and pressed with a finger it is like grease. The coolant is clear?
