  1. I've had it 3 years. It is a 65 Mack C85 fire truck. I have not changed the oil in it since I've had it, but will be soon.i have the service manual it says either straight 30 weight or 10W 40 or 10W 30
  2. I have a 65 Mack with an ENDTF673 Diesel in it. At 170 degrees operating temp the oil pressure is at 80 psi at the gauge. I think that is to high. Either my gauge is bad or I have an issue somewhere else. The motor only has 44 thousand miles on it as it is a fire truck. I was going to stick a gauge on it at the turbo to verify my fi dings before I do anything else. Can anyone give me a idea of what else could cause it. I'm guessing it has some type of relief valve and I was going to change my oil soon too.
  3. So I figured out what was going on. The truck had sat in different places over the past 10 years and had several people working on it. We were able to isolate it to number 1 cylinder and bought a rebuilt injector thinking it may of been bad. Turns out that someone had it out already and had left the copper washer in it. I pulled the old one out and a washer was on it, however I did not know another was down in so I installed the new injector and sure enough...tap,tap,tap.. I took it apart and looked down with a flash light and was surprised to see it. It was removed, carbon cleaned up and new injector installed and bingo... noise went away. Thank you again for all of your advice. I appreciate it. This is a great site for old Macks
  4. Yes the valves are adjusted to spec. I never thought of the piston skirt but the noise comes and goes. We changed the no. 1 injector but it still makes the sound. I'm going to investigate further. Thanks for the input
  5. Does anyone have an exploded view of a Mack ENDTF 673 Engine or pictures of the front cam and crank gears. Trying to isolate an issue I am having with my 65. I am having a tapping noise that comes and goes and using a stethoscope it sounds like in front of number 1 Cylinder. It is more profound at idle. At times after it heats up, it goes away but re appears. Thanks
  6. I have a 65 Mack C85 fire truck with a ENDFT673 diesel in it. Recently I changed the water pump, added a new thermostat and had the radiator re-cored. While it was apart I noticed the water pump had a vent on it, which was leaking. I was unable to find a replacement for it. So I left it off. How important is it to have? My truck doesn't want to build heat. The gauge shows 120 max and even checked with a heat gun, it still only shows 120 at the water manifold. I'm guessing I'm air locked? I don't know. Any help appreciated.
  7. Ok thanks. Any idea where I could get a gasket set for the manifolds. It appears I'll need to take 1 end or the other off. Thanks
  8. Anyone have a part number or any info on this?. The housing is leaking between the pipes and I am certain it has O rings however the pipe itself looks bad and it requires removal off the entire cooling system intake part or whatever it is called. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
  9. That looks exactley like what is on mine. Thank you!!!
  10. I have a 1965 Mack C85FD with a 673 Turbo diesel and was wondering if anyone has a part number or somewhere I can find a replacement fuel supply pump at the tank. I think mine is bad
  11. Ok. Thanks for the info. When I get back in there I'll get better pics of it and a try to get a pic of the oil leak
  12. I posted the other day about an oil leak on my truck and I have definitely found it. I have a lot of experience working on cars but at times am lost with this truck. Anyhow my truck is a 65 Mack fire engine equipped with a ENDTF673 Diesel. The injection pump is an American Bosch APE 6BB 90Q pump and it appears like on the very back oil is coming out of it. I am having a really hard time finding info on how to remove it and repair it. I'm not exactley sure what part of the governor is leaking but the oil is coming out of it and running down my frame even when the truck is off and hasn't been running for days. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks again. This is a great site
  13. So I think I finally found the source. It appears like the rear of the injection pump is leaking oil. It looks like there is a panel on the side with bolts thru it and it is leaking there
  14. Ok thanks for the info. I'll look into it more
  15. Ok. Thanks then that is where I'll look. I am assuming that compressor can be rebuilt?
  16. So I am new to this and have recently bought a 1965 Mack C85FD fire truck equipped with a ENDTF673 Diesel. The trick has power steering. Both the compressor and power steering are run off the back of the linked by 2 belts. Any how I noticed an oil leak up near the very top of my compressor and it is running down over the power steering pump. I have wiped it off a few times and notice it comes back with the truck off and sitting for days. The leak isn't big but noticeable. I have tried to look for the source, but can really see it because my view is blocked by the exhaust pipe and turbo. There is a line running into the block near there. I can clearly see it is not leaking. Does that air pump have an oil line up high or some type of removable head the could be leak oil out. Thanks !
  17. So I did take my Mack to a reputable shop and the guy there said it could possibly be the timing of the pump or the pump is wore out. Anyone know where I could find a used one? He said it could cost over 1500 to fix it. Another thing he said it could be is a valve seat may of come un-done. Another costly repair. Might be selling. Will know more next week.
  18. It doesn't have a dynatard. Im thinking it may only be the injectors. I'm fairly certain they have never been rebuilt. A while ago I did take the valve covers off and did not see anything broke in the upper valve train. In fact the engine look pretty clean for 51 years old.. I'm hoping it does not have a piston broke.
  19. Do you think it could still run Ok with something like that?
  20. I have a 65 Mack with a 673 turbo and at idle it has a distinct huff, huff, huff, huff sound I tried sending a video but the file is too big. It also smokes a whitest gray smoke. It doesn't seem to be at a loss for power so I'm wondering what anyone thinks. I'm thinking it could be a valve not seating itself right or possibly all the injectors need rebuilt. I have tried standyne injection cleaner and running it as hard as I can but it did not change anything.
  21. So I was doing some research and one of things I saw was if the control rack was misaligned it could cause a miss. Does anyone know how to check the adjustment of the gear segment and control sleeve on the control rack of an American Bosch injection pump for a 237 Mack. Thanks..
  22. Thanks for the info. I took it apart tonight and found a copper coil inside with press fit fittings. I replaced the hoses and gasket to it and did like you said blocked it off. My local plumber said it was to keep the Pump from freezing in the winter.
  23. Yes took it for a hard ride up a big mountain the other day. It has not lost power. If I could figure out how to post a video of it I would. At idle it smokes a little which is not unusual I think but it lopes or puffs at idle. Sort of like purrs, purrs, purrs, then puff, puff, puff then back to purring good.
  24. So today I used a thermal scanner on the exhaust ports to see if I could pinpoint which cylinders may be causing me an issue. Here is what I came up with. 1-171 2-221 3-210 4-180 5-169 6-164. I left it run an additional 5 minutes at 1200 RPM and here are the numbers 1-194 2-242 3-215 4-196 5-195 6-183. I'm thinking that number 2 and 3 are leaning out because of the higher tempatures. I did dump a bottle standyne injection cleaner in it and was going to dump it in again. Any input would be great thanks..
  25. Ok sure I'll post one later today.
