  1. In the earlier post you indicated that the fuel had been bumped up. The increase in EGT can be showing an imbalance between the fuel and air.

There can be other causes to the higher reading on the pyro such as a restrictive exhaust system, a restriction or blockage in the cooler limiting air, dirty air filter, high engine water temperature or engine timing being slightly off.

Firstly, Thanks for the reply...The Air filter is new, the timing has been checked twice and the water temp never goes above 200...I have only seen the fan go into full lock once (is a viscous style fan hub set at 205 ) in twelve years and that was about 11 and 1/2 years ago The fuel was turned up after the engine was overhualed at about year four of ownership, before that the EGTS never went above 850-900 but the truck was gutless, just squeezed to hard for economy as far as I was concerned, the truck would go up hill and down now with 12 yards of gravel in the box without dropping out of high gear if it wasn't for the hot exhaust. I drive it myself so I watch it closely I just would be happier if it didn't climb up that high, that is why I was asking about a bigger turbo. Thanks again

...and the muffler is a 60 dollar Donaldson that I don't believe, judging by the sound it makes, has much for internals ie: baffles, so I don't believe there is much restriction there. But IDK

...and by the restriction in the cooler do you mean the ATA or CAC as some refer to it being restricted?

  2. I have another question about my boost on here but wanted to ask this separately.....My EM6 250 makes between 7 and 17ish lbs boost and runs fine but....I have to be a bit careful in long pulls or the exhaust temp will push up to and most likely would surpass 1050, My question is can I put a different turbo on this engine that will build more boost? and if I do that will more boost help keep the exhaust temps down in the 'safe' area without down shifting as soon? It's a drag when you drop out of high gear with a six speed and harder to get back into high because of the distance between gears. Has anyone had the same issue with their older Macks? if so what did you do to help fix the problem?

  3. Thanks for the pictures....but what a shame to see these trucks sitting around in this state when if nothing else they could be working daily, or someone that likes B models could be giving them the 'love' they deserve.

I see by the way you worded you comment it could be taken that He STILL uses them...but the pictures would suggest otherwise.A lot of these B models seem to fall into the 'You don't know what you got till it's gone' category.

  4. The tires on my B61 are junk and Im upgrading to the 22.5 size. I found a used set of Kumho 11r 22.5 non recaps all 8 matching drives with 25% tread. The guy wants $900 for them. Is this a fair price? My truck wont see many miles as its just a hobby truck any tires I put on it will go bad with age far before I wear the tread off.

    -Jeremy

In my neck of the woods it would be, Casings that will cap bring around $115.00 to buy them with a cap on them, of course if you already own some and a tire capping co. wants them to put a cap on for resale, yours are only worth $60 bucks apiece. A recapped 16ply traction tire and casing around here will cost a bit more than $300.00, which is what most any NEW tire cost before the oil prices spiked to $140.00 a barrel the first time... now it's $40.00 a barrel and tires are STILL double...gotta love it

  5. I actually see in the 10-11 to 16-17 range so I guess I'm in the ball park...... for they way the truck pulls now I wouldn't consider spending much money on injectors/turbos and fuel pumps to jump it up 25 HP, I have the pump set up a bit now and the truck runs good, just that I have to watch the exhaust temp when I'm in long pulls, I was hoping more boost might help it in that area but seeing as I drive the truck myself I don't worry much about it. when it gets up close to 1000 degrees I start thinking about dropping a gear. It's a 6 speed and I like to stay in high gear when possible but I won't cook it to do that.

  6. Yeah, the boost numbers are for sure low compared to any other engine I've seen, does anyone ever do anything to get more boost from these engines? if so what would it take? bigger turbo maybe?

I do enjoy working the old truck and it does a good job as is but if I could tweak it a little for cheap that would be good too.

  7. Overpriced? I'd ask much more if it were mine (if it's as solid/straight as it looks in the pics) and has good mechanical's...

Yeah, I don't know what the real world price of the truck is, the $7100.00 was as high as the bids went (it didn't sell by the way)....and it didn't get above the reserve so obviously they want more than that for it. Anyone close to Christiansburg, Va. that was looking for a good restoration piece...and had a handful of disposable income, would be wise to check it out. It looks like a sound piece of history to me.

  8. Between 8-16 psi.

Thanks, that's were I'm at so I guess I'm good to go, I just thought it a bit low because of every other post I seen on other Mack engines it was always higher, but as I stated in my OP I hadn't seen anything concerning my engine. Not much talk here about the EM6...I guess it's a little outdated now, sort of like talking about hand grenades when atomic bombs are the norm. :D But it does what I need it to and the payment book is long gone

  9. :SMOKIE-LFT: Generals were pretty nice trucks back in the day. I always liked the one Jerry Reed drove in Smokey and the Bandit II. Thinking about that kind of takes me back to my child hood when they built cool trucks and cool movies, and when I was asked what I wanted to do when I grow up I'd tell them I wanted to be a truck driver cause it was a real mans job and it was a cool job. What the heck happened?

The gubmint took over with all their regulations and now all truck drivers are book taught.

  10. strange to hear this, we ran 3406b 425hp along side of 400 macks and cummins and had great luck with the cats, the biggest complaint was the same as the macks ........no whooh! the engine brakes sucked in both compared to a cummins. my buddy's c-15's spend more time in the shop than our b mod's ever did

Let me say this, They didn't ALL blow and if they held together they did a fine job! But many more in my area that were cranked blew than didn't, I didn't have the guts to crank mine. I sold it in 93 and went driving OTR in a 400 cat that ran good but I was only in it for a short time and the company I was with put me in a new 3406 425 that was in a1994 star and that was as gutless as my old 400, but I did put 750,000 on that truck in 4 years with just one rebuild around 450,000 or there abouts.

  11. All that 3406 needs is the screws turned out in the fuel pump and the afrac screw turned in a little and 500 hp if it's a 3406b 425 factory, and it will scoot then!

Yeah, there were a lot of guys around my neck of the woods that had these 3406B cats when I was running mine, and most that cranked em up blew them up....I was tempted a time or two but I was trting to keep it together long enouh to pay for it......didn't happen, it had liner seal problems at 270,000 and I ended up overhauling it at that time, I run it three more years after that though (7 total) never any nuts but it got the job done. I don't by any means want to discourage the guy with this rebuild but I did want to convey my experience with my cat. I inframed it in 1989 at Cat for $5,500.00 if I recall  Now they tell me it's $15,000 to do it
