  1. OH this is special...I removed side covers on 401 gas engine to find that the lifter on #4 has fallen out/over...I can feel it up in there,,seems loose, it's laying sideways but can't seem to lift it out..my guess is somehow it broke..That's enough excitement for me! I will either sell this truck or put a liner in the dump box and use it for a hot tub!

  2. Stuck valves seem common on flatheads. After a good spray of penetrating oil I use an allen wrench inserted through the plug holes. The angle can get you directly over the valve then a tap with the hammer will usually set then into place. After they drop into place crank the engine and repeat the process on the remaining stuck ones. I have neighbors that seem to have stuck valves in thier irrigation pump engines each year. Thats how I take care of them.

Thanks,,I will fog,,pour transmission oil down cylinders and tap at valves through plug holes.. I really don't want to remove head. Fortunately a blizzard rolled through today so I did not start removing head.

OT I have been delivering some Mack Pinnacles with Volvo engines and 18 speed automatics,,,the epitamy of laziness for the driver but they work really well,,usually grossing 130k with A-trains

  3. Thanks guys,,yes #1 is at the rad,,,next to number 2,,,seems the problem is stuck intake valves on #2,3,4 and 5,,,looks like the head has to come off,,,tried freeing up # 2 through the side cover but it is really stiff and the rest will be nearly impossible to get any leverage on,,can't believe how much prying pressure to get ér down,,,We had the truck running last summer and pretty dissappointing to see this mess...

This whole problem started with pouring gas down carb to start engine,,,,later found carb plugged,,the gas washed all the oil off valves leaving it to rust over the winter,,,Ya ,,,whoa is me

  4. I bought a 88 Mack triaxle at auction and drove it home yesterday. It has a ~50 gallon fuel tank on each side. The fuel gauge is not working, so I checked each tank before I left and they both had about 9 inches. I went about 10 miles and ran out of fuel. At this point I went to unscrew the caps and found they were under considerable pressure (maybe 15 psi). The driver side tank was empty and the passenger tank now has about 12 inches of fuel. Of course it draws out of the drivers side and that is where the return line goes too.

    What would cause this?

I put new fuel filters on and put some fuel in the drivers side to make it to the fuel station. The station was only a mile away and the tanks seemed to build up pressure again. I filled the driver side tank up to the top and drove it the rest of the way home with no problems. It was dark when I got home so I did not stick the tanks to see how much was left, but they were pressurized again.

I looked in the tanks this morning and the drivers side is now half empty and the passenger side is full to the top. I did not put any fuel in the passenger side yesterday. The vent is on the passenger side. There is no vent on the drivers side. Just a suction line and a return line. The two tanks are plumbed together on the bottom.

This thing really has me baffled. I thought that the tanks would have equalized overnight?????

  5. Try through the hole in the bottom of the flywheel housing. There is a pointer and the marks are on the flywheel.

    Rob

Rob,,there is no hole in bottom of my flywheel cover other than a very small 3/8 for greasing throwout bearing I suspect...If the timing marks are back there does this mean #1 firing piston is at the firewall? Currently the truck won't start,,although I did have it running a few months ago.

  6. Hello

I am trying to find timing marks on my 402 Mack gas engine,, the one on the crank pulley is obvious however the one on block or whatever eludes me,,,Is it the 3 dots on the bottom of crossmember,,or the 3 scratches on top of the crossmember?? I can find absolutely no information on this engine,,points gap,,plug gap etc...any help would be greatly appreciated..I do know the timing is 3btc

    thanx

  7. With so many of these trucks sold with a bill of sale only, how big of a pain in the rear is it to obtain a replacement title for the truck. Does anyone have any info on this. I reallize that every state is different in there rules and laws. Anyone have any experience doing this in Illinois?

Hello,,I talked to friends in MN,, they said it took them 2 years to get a title,,,mailing things back and forth,,,who knows. Here in Ontario you go into a (privately operated) DMV with your bill of sale,,if the vehicle has not been plated for 5 years they have you sign a afadavit, pay sales tax and then hand you your new registration,,takes about 10 minutes

  8. Hello

Not sure what to do with it,,,told the honey I could slide a camper into the box and call it our motorhome LOL

  10. Hi All,

I live in southwestern Manitoba Canada. I just recently made a deal to acquire a LJ Mack that belonged to an old friend of mine who has passed on. He used the LJ to move his Koering draglines.

The Serial # on the Mack's registration is 202517. I don't see any data tags on her anywhere.

Where would they be if the existed and is the serial # punched in the frame somewhere?

Can you guys tell me what year she is?

The Dog is missing as are the spears from the hood side panels but other than that it is fairly complete at firsdt glance.

It will have to wait a bit to get into the shop as I have several other projects ahead of it.

I'll be here looking and learnin'
