  1. must not have been anyone in here, surely they woulda been bragging by now.Sounds like it sold pretty good,I was guessing in the $4k range.

I didn't get the chance to go and I agree on the 4K, I was thinking 3.5K to 4.5K. if it was as bad as claimed.

If it really was 127K actual miles and showed it then the sky would've been the limit, just not by me.

  2. Robert Murphy,Custom Truck Upholstery.Got a complete diamond tuck interior from him for my first B-61,less than $500 in 1984.He did nice work.Sure would like to know whatever happened to that F model cab he had made into a trailer.

Sorry.... I hadn't seen your reply to this thread when I replied.

Starting in the early 70's and thru the years I'll bet I probably bought 50 sets of interior and was most always satisfied with the craftsmanship, except for his insistence on using a different color piping around the edges

He had a guy who ran the shop in the late 70's early 80's named Jimmy who definitely wasn't a people person.

The first kit was for an F Model and after that I put it in most every F model that I owned and I feel pretty certain that they did the Evel Knievel F Model also.

  3. Everyone is after the mighty buck, all off the back of the trucker. There is none left, I don't know what makes them think truckers are money trees? If they aren't doing it for proffit, then write a sitation to repair on site or with in 48 hrs. Concerned about safety? Go after the 90% of auto drivers using cell phones, driving truck is like walking through a bar full of drunks break dancing. The cars are all over the road these days. More towns will follow, this is on 81 so they know they got a gift horse. http://www.landlinemag.com/Story.aspx?StoryID=24816

One of the problems with this is that you have inspectors with (maybe) a highschool education, interpreting regulations and laws written by so called educated, knowledgeable professional's who have had no real practical experience in their field

As a result you are at the mercy of some usually incompetent over bearing cop with an attitude.

Arbitrary inspections and weight restrictions are the cash cow for a lot a the small towns in Pa.

  4. All I can say is WOW! I had thought maybe the guy from E. St. Louis,Ill.,that used to advertise in OVERDRIVE did the interior. Very cool footage.Nice that the guy thought of filming it for all us to see 40 years later! Thanks 2stack for posting it! :bulldog1:

The mans last name was Murphy and I think his first name was Gene.... It was my opinion as soon as I saw it that he had sewn it. He used to be at the Skelly Truck Stop in E Saint Louis.

He had the patterns for most makes and models of trucks(except the time that I needed it for a Marmon) and would UPS most interiors in a couple of days.

His trademark was to use a different color piping on all of his upholstery

I ordered interiors from him for many of my F's and R's Models as well as other many other makes of trucks.

He and I had a lot of discussions, with me trying to convince him that I wanted the same color piping as the interior color, lots of times with no success

His display vehicle was an F Model cab.

  5. That was a pretty complicated looking setup... until I saw him engage the splitter, while still accelerating, and it was then I realized what it was he had for a transmission.

In 83 we built a 359 Pete glider kit and since it was for extreme heavy haul we equipped it with a 15 over (which was my preferred transmission) and a manual 4speed auxiliary. It was very impressive to look at,but when someone asked me(and they often did) How in the world do you shift it ,since it has 60 possible gear combinations? My simple answer..." leave the aux in direct and shift it like a 10 spd. " The only exception is when it's under extremely heavy loads, you might have to use the aux when starting off on a hill,or you need to catch half a gear to maintain speed. In deep reduction and under under(two unders) you could walk as fast as it would run at 2100 RPM.

"Just because something looks complicated, doesn't always mean that it really is".

  6. the 413 wedge in the R models was the industrial version tho. i think the hotrod car and truck version has extra rod bolts that actually went thu the block into the mains?? someone here probably knows.

Sorry, I guess that I must've concentrated more on the term rod bolts, which I took to be part of the reciprocating assembly . I guess I'd never heard rod bolt used in relation to the block and only when referring to the rods.
  7. Nothing more than a political power grab and grand standing by the hnic. nothing more . . . nothing less. In a few days we will have the ads of the starving children, the homeless doper (my grandson) and the toothless old undocumented alien saying how this was caused by A) Mitt Romney B) G.W. Bush C) the people who don't work hard enough to give em more free crap D) all of the above. Obama will blame everybody but himself and Harry Reid for not letting them raise taxes an borrow more money..... S.N.A.F.U.

    What's a Head N----- In Charge???

They are doing every thing in their power to destroy the greatest nation to ever exist in this world.

There are far to many people who vote for a living as opposed to those who work for everything they have.

What has happened to common sense, do they still allow it.

When Obama ran the first time I said that it was a referendum on the white male in this country and I was right.

They stack the Supreme Court with people with a lifetime appointment and carte blanche to turn our constitution up side down

.Why have so many young Americans given their lives to protect our way of life yet we allow those who contribute nothing to elect their own unqualified sycophant to the greatest honor that our country can bestow on an American citizen

.And they require no proof from him that he even is one.

    "WHO IS JOHN GALT" ?

(If you don't know to what I refer google that question and find out)

There was a woman born in Russia in 1905 by the name of Ayn Rand who foretold in the 40's and early 50's what our countries future would hold for us .

That when thru GUILT over something that they want us to believe, and that is that we bear the responsibility for something our ancestors may or may not have done.

So that we've (those who have allowed it) enabled the looters to rise to power and enact the laws and regulations that they would use to destroy our economy and ultimately our country and take our freedom from us in the name of compassion, fairness and progressive politics.

The Socialist Model has been tried all over the world and has never worked (look at Cuba, N Korea and a whole lot of Europe) yet it's always left the people who they claim to want to help in worse shape than ever, while the ruling Elite deceivers are not held to any form of accountability for their actions cause they were done for "The good of the people".

    Sound Familiar????? :bulldog3:

  8. ya,,,the 237 is a boat ancher,,,i used to run one,,,if you got hills,,,forget it,,,its strickly a flatland motor,,,price dont seem too far off,,,but you wont be happy with the power...and yes you need atleast a 300 plus...bob

In reality, the 237 is no boat anchor by any stretch of the imagination....

It definitely was a torque monster in it's day, unfortunately it's day came and went many years ago

Once you've witnessed the torque rise and I think it's something like 53% it's a very impressive little engine.

But that said,if given the choice I would still choose a 300 or maybe a 300+ or even a 350 for hauling timber.

Do you know what Atlas did when he could no longer carry the weight of the world on his shoulders? HE SHRUGGED!!!!!

  10. Dad pissed off alot of the "big boys" with his '72 V8 F model, especially in the hills.

I've had V 8's and I've also had 1693TA's and I loved the sound of the V8 but I really loved the torque and pulling power of the 1693, just not the 3/12 to 4 MPG

.I remember an old man(or so I thought at the time) from Pa., who had the best running V8 equipped F Model that I'd ever encountered, so I kept track of it and bought it from him when he retired. Although with the right driver(it had a triplex) it could run & hide from 335's 350's and most other engines of that era it couldn't pull with my 1693 TA when we got into the mountains

I remember in the early seventies when all I could do in my F models was say"WOW" when those Monfort (Circus Wagons) blew by me. :bulldog3:

  11. The 413 had 4 bolt mains and I'm pretty sure that's what you were referring to,cause rod bolts can't be bolted to the block. The 413 hotrod engine was equipped with the legendary Cross Ram manifold and was quite formidable and was an excellent drag engine. I think this engine was introduced in '59 but I'm not sure but I believe Mack started making them available in '66.

  12. i know my grandfather had a '65 R410 with a wedgeblock 413 and 18 speed baby quad and 44 rears on camelback. compared to the B42's everyone said it was an animal. when we bought my B613 it had a 413 wedgeblock someone put in it. i still have it on a stand on the garage floor. its brand new with 100 miles on it. Keith.... i forget his name has a really nice R410P. least he did. i sold him the 5 speed and 3 speed auxillary out of my B613 to put in his R model. there is an R410 that shows up at Balston spa everyone once ina while to, its pristine. the same guy owns the decked out B model wrecker he bought at the National truck show auction a few years back i think in south bend. my B475 firetruck has a 354 Hemi in it with i think a clark or spicer transmission and rockwell rear end. have opened up the hood on a few B and early R models and found 318 road oilers stuffed in there to. Mack also put the POS 475 scania in some early R and DM models. BTW whats up with the plate under the bulldog mount on that R with the Road oiler in it???

I was wondering if anyone caught on to the fact that a 413 was a Wedge and not a Hemi.

I had a 426 Hemi with dual 4's in a Charger in '69 so I use to be somewhat familiar with Hemi's .

But I was a" Mack Nut" even then,(that was the year I got out of the Army and bought my first Mack) and I haven't owned a Hemi since 71 but I've still got my passion for Macks though.

    :bulldog3:

  13. I don't know if any of these made it to the Mack line or any other truck maker as I have never saw any or heard of them . This is from a 1942 Caterpillar Product line brochure.

    Interesting.

My father, two brothers and I set up a hand set sawmill and powered it with a Cat D 4600 like this from 1969- 1988,We moved the mill and I repowered it with a NH 230 Cummins 1992- present.

The good thing about the Cat engines they can run continuesly under full load, and many of this model were found in swing shovels and cranes. etc. That engine was no ball of fire.

    FW

I've got one that I removed from a gen set with very low hours. I've got several older low hour engines that I removed from gen sets that I have bought thru the years,

Got one diesel that was manufactured by the White Motor Co. It's the only one that I have ever seen. :bulldog3:

  14. Hey everyone, i am thinking of buying a dm 600 from a guy that has a 237 and a 2 pole six speed. Now the truck has a nice log bed on it and will haul around 3500 hundrend feet of timber and more if the wood is good and he claims the truck will run about 55 mph he said maybe 58 and that it is alot cheaper on fuel than his 300 r model. the truck is in good shape one spot of rust on the cab in front of the drivers door, the frame is very dry and needs some paint. The truck feels very tight and drives good. The only thing that bothers me is the truck has always smoked very light when warmed up going down the road, blue haze come out of it not bad smoke but a light blue smoke. What could this be the engine is smooth and starts right up. I will be useing it local to haul about 25 miles one way, i do wish it would do around 70 so i could get on the free way coming back but it doesnt take that much longer to just go the old road. Also the truck has what i call a belly frame it is very tall till it gets about a foot behind the cab and it is double framed that looks good but it does need some paint and primer because the old paint is almost gone and the surface rust is getting bad on it and it has the 55,000lbs rears with 11r 24.5 rubber. He is asking 7500 bucks for it and to me it seems a little high but i would say the bed woud cost around 2500 to build not counting labor so it's probley about right, so what can you all here tell me about these trucks, he has used it off and on for about 7 years and sold it once for 12,000 bucks and then got it back from the guy, so i am thanking it is a good truck but would i be better off to find a r model and pay a little more, and are the 237 realy that much better on fuel than the 300, i used to drive for him with his r model and i usally filled up twice a week maybe 3 times if we hauled alot, so any info would be greatly apperciated.

I noticed that you are from Williamsburg, and if that DM has been used locally in the Ky. and Tn. area around you they use alot of salt on the roads in the winter. So be sure to check the front cab mounts, because the floors and mounts on DM's are very susceptible to rust. As for the fuel economy of a 237 vs a 300, a whole lot depends on the driver and how heavy his foot is on the throttle, and with a 237 you will spend most of the time with your foot flat on the floor. The mountains in your area are pretty steep so I personally would choose a 300 over a 237 if i was hauling the kind of weight you will be required to. Oh! and a Jake or at least a Dynatard would be mighty handy too.

  15. What is the most unusual engine Mack installed in their trucks?

    I'll start it:

I had a Cruiseliner with a 3208 Cat and Allison transmission combo it was a good looking truck,Black exterior, Aluminum wheels, Alum fuel tanks butonce you started the engine it was always good for one thing, and that one thing was a conversation piece and a source of bewilderment from Mack enthusiasts.
