have someone turn the key to start, power should be on the little wire, that's the exciter wire. at the same time power should go thru the solenoid to the motor, check for power on the l shaped piece going from the lower lug to the motor. that will tell you if its the starter thats bad or the solenoid. if it's not going thru, you can take the back of the solenoid off by taking the 4 bolts off cover and clean the contacts and the flip washer. it will make sense when you see it

if the solenoid is cluncking take a test light and see if power is going thru to the motor . if it is the starter needs attention if not the contact washer "the flip washer" in the solenoid needs to be cleaned or flipped and the contacts cleaned. common problem, will cause a hit or miss start

most older cummins have kicker solenoids on them, usually on the block or firewall

check the stroke of the valve, if it overstrokes it will slow down. try not pulling the lever all the way and see if it speeds up

my department has a 1978 CF600 we use as a fundraising truck. it lost its spider gears last night and spagettied the carrier. anyone have an idea where i can locate one. any help would be appreciated

if I remember right , the center line of the plate {king pin } should be 6" forward of the center line of the tandems.
-
it shouldn't have a long bolt , two separate bolts. tighten the pulley side bolt first then the back, the adjusting bushing should slide and bottom out before it hits the ear.

body bound bolts, use a reamer to drill final size so the bolts have to be hammered in

I built one on an old horse at work and used a 1" plate. notch it so it goes both inside and outside the frame so you can weld it on the inside and out and then run triangle gussets inside plate to frame. by the way we tow a 25 ton trailer hauling a 309(i think) cat excavator or a read screen-all

That has to be our DM we ordered from Waterbury Mack in 87 and never took because they were way late with delivery. It had a 300 with the air 6 and that same body and was blue. It would make perfect sense they had it as a demo then to begin with, I always wondered where it ended up.
nope, that was Vinny's truck D-111 350, 12 speed
I was a mechanic there, I did a lot of work on that truck
ID my beige Cummins engine?
