changed cam in my 99 e7 460, knew that the engine was not the same engine that was in it from factory. After changing cam found out that the engine that is now in it is actually a 427 and not a 460, contacted my local mack dealer gave serial number of the truck and serial number of the engine that is in the truck and were told that the cam kit we put in is still the right cam for that engine. While apart we found that one unit pump had failed and one push tube had come apart at the base of the tube, replaced these components. The cam kit came with new lifters and tappets for the unit pumps/fuel injectors. With aid of of mack engine service manual install all components aligined the timing marks on all the gears and sewed it back up. Added all fluids and filters, fillled all filters before installing, adjusted all lifters according to the timing marks on the fly wheel did a manual engine rotation and all exhaust lifters came loose, went throw again this time using top dead center found that the marks on the fly wheel ddn't corespond to the cylinders we were trying to set. redid valve adjustment according to tdc, primed fuel and tried to start. engine turns over saw ark on one of the unit pump wire on first attempt engine canks but will not fire no smoke from stacks, sounds like a popping when cranking on one of the cylinders. any ideas? stumped. was suggested that we pull air intake tube and try helping with wd40 could be air in the system still from sitting that could be the popping we hear, and the ark probably popped the the fuse for the ecm. another opinion i got is that the crank is out 180, i find this doubtful as according to the manual the timing marks will only line up once every 16 revolutions of the crank. am going to try the first suggestion before pulling things apart again.
