  1. Just make sure you get the printout (upgrades, recall items, warranty work etc.) that accompanies the engine, will save you alot of greif in the long run!....Mark

Thanks Mark! I used to work at a Mack dealer years ago and still know the owners well. They have offered to run the VIN's on any Mack I look at.

What exactly are the "upgrades" that need to be done to the EGR system? I am pretty handy with a wrench (and hammer!!). I read one thread on here about blocking or removing the EGR all together. Will the truck still pass a sniffer test?

  2. do your homework i didnt and a 2004 allmost put me under.

2004 are cheep and most have 300 to 400 thousand miles, there is a reason, warrenty runs out at 300,000 and you cant keep it going, egr cooler 2 grand, mass flow tube another grand, they usually go togather, they push coolant out allways, then crack egr cooler.

late 03 thru 05 are the worst,06 and 07 are better, but still egr motors. cx are worse than ch

any time you find a mack with less than 800,000 miles find out why they got rid of it, nobody gets rid of a good mack with less than 800,000 miles

if you dont mind their age the 1999 thru 2002 are the best ever built. (pre emission)

if you are a good mechanic, and have $5,000 to $8,000 to spend on cooling upgrades, and bypass the egr system. they make dependable trucks.

if your like me and have to have all work done in a shop, you can figure $10,000 to $15,000 to fix the problems.

research anything egr, mostly in modern mack trucks on this site to get a better understanding.

    hope this helps. good luck

    Thanks Bigen,

That all explains why I see so many with seemingly low mileage. With this economy you don't know if they guy is selling due to work shortage or repair money shortage.....

I sure appreciate the help and sharing of experience!!!

  3. Well, I'm still looking at a few Mack Visions. Various years, various miles. All 460hp.

Is there certain years that are better than others? The ones I have found so far are between 2000 and 2007.

The prices sure are a bunch lower on KW/Pete dealer lots. I guess they want to move the off brand stuff!!

    Thanks for the advice folks!!

  4. I didn't realize you had posted the VIN. You might want to look really close at the turbo and exhaust manifold on the engine, from what I can see it hasn't had a new turbo installed since 2005. If it hasn't had one replaced since then I would say it is inevitable that it will need one, the VGT turbo's for these engines are expensive. Just something to keep in mind before diving in.

Very good info, thanks a bunch!! I didn't expect anyone to look up the VIN for me!!

The truck has about 710,000kms (440,000miles). I would like to replace a turbo before they go boom, much less work....

  5. 64 MPH @ 1500 RPM.

    90 MPH @ 2100 RPM.

    Cool, thanks for the info!!

Any estimates on fuel economy? Will be pulling ~25 tonne in a 53' van. Fuel being the biggest expense, I don't want to make a bad choice.

I think this truck was used to haul a dump trailer before, so not sure it had much long haul. The way this truck is spec'ed it should pull a house down, I just don't want to have a tanker following me!!

    Thanks again for the help!!

  6. I am looking real hard at this heavy spec 2004 Vision.

    It has:

    E7 460

    Mack 18 speed

    4.10:1 Full Lockers

    14000/46000

    22.5 Tires

    VIN: 1M1AE07Y64N020862

I have been told that if you get the Mack's RPMs over 1500 the mileage goes for a crap. Would this truck be reving too high at 65mph? We are capped here in Ontarion Canada at 105kph (65mph).

    Thanks for the help guys!!

  7. Hey folks,

I am looking at a 2004 Vision. It has the E7 460 with an 18 speed. It is a heavy spec truck with 14,600 front/46,000 rear. Assuming cab/sleeper is the same, how much heavier is this truck than a standard 12K/40K spec truck? The frame is a heavy single also.

    Thanks for the help!!

  8. I mirror rhaslers response, i own and operate a 2001 CX-613,look real hard at the camshaft history! the only other on-going problem i have ever had with mine is with leaking coolant tanks, and air compressor regulators other tahn that mine has been nearly problem free, i'm right at 875,000 myself, and i really have no big complaints with mine............Mark

That's a good lookin ride Mark!!

Thanks for the info guys, I will get the VIN and check into it.

Are the replacement cams/turbo's better than the originals?

    Bill
