As I have mentioned many times before, if your loosing prime when the motor isnt running its the return to the tank side of things

Pressurise the fuel system to maybe 10 - 15 psi at the fuel cap on the tank and look for leaks

Do this before you start blowing a whole of money buying parts hoping to fix it

All these check valves and things always leak back with a little bit of age, the return fuel line siphons fuel back up from the tank to keep it primed when it isnt running, old mechanical injector pump motors are desgined this way

Need to remember millions upon millions of diesel motors have been built with the same basic injection system and dont need a electric fuel pump

    Good luck

found leak behind fan on return using 12 lbs in tanks    thank you

  2. thank you guys for info on stuff to look at,   im old and old school and cant put picture on cause i still have a flip fone. my brain refuses to update and thats part of the reason i still drive a 77 r model, i guess me and the old dump truck understand each other, at least we did before this latest curveball.

  3. i dont know how to search the archives i guess, but my old 77  2 valve loses prime over night, a little ether helps but dont sound to good on motor. i cant find any leaks and have changed both filters.  i would consider a electric pump tp prime with but dont see a good way to tie it in.   stumped?

  4. anyway, i ordered a hand pump, right now i have nothing but a little air pressure in the tank with no luck, scared to put too much pressure. when the pump gets here i am going to try a little air pressure with the pump, if that dont work i am going to fill the primary, if that dont work i will fill the secondary , right now i have no hand pump or any way to prime the system except for air pressure in the tank. thank you  guys for responding.

  5. i got this truck a while back with a 12 speed in it. there is a toggle switch on the dash that says lo and direct on it. it works fine, when it is in lo the only gear it will let you use is first. perfect for taking off with a load to save the clutch. but it dont like it when you flip that switch on the move. what am i missing? i dont get on the net very often so i apologize if it takes me a long time to respond. any info would be much appreciated. thanx

  6. i'm sorry i'm so slow to respond to everybody but my puter took a dump for ahwile. i took the j hancock advice and ordered the baldwin g25-af and they are a perfect fit. my parts guy wont look at me in the face when i walk in the parts house. they only cost me 6 bucks each. i'm self employed and use my 77 r model most every day. i rebuilt my engine with help from you guys and it runs like a champ. thanks again!!!

  7. this might be the wrong forum but... my parts man might be lazy but he cant find the gaskets for my dual air cleaner r model. i think they measure 15 in. OD and 13 in. ID with 12 holes for 5/16 bolts. there are 2 gaskets that appear to interchange. i would love to walk in the parts house with a part # and show that guy. any help would be much appreciated.

  8. my '77 r model Mack only warms up to 140 degrees when cold. put it to work and it goes to 180. it has a check valve in the thermostat. if it idles 15 or 20 minutes it goes back to 140 or 150. not good for heater. i have a thermostat that has no check valve that would fit but it says on the box to only use in deaerated systems. i dont know if my 676 endt would accept this thermostat. any help would be appreciated. thank you.

  9. ah yes, i should have figured that out, really no different than my small block chevy. for some reason my mind stumbles on that big diesel. i got them all adjusted and i noticed a lot of rocker arm slack on part of the stroke but when it came back around to the pointer everything checked out fine. i wonder why?

  10. the balancer shows 1 and 6 together , then 3 and 4 and so on. do you set all 4 valves say on 1 and 6 together. it seems to me each cylinder would need to be on tdc on the firing stroke. you guys have really helped me put on this in the past and i sure do thank you. i advertised looking for a shop manual but had no luck.
