  1. I think people that buy new are generally between a rock and a hard place. Need the equipment but cant come up with the cash to buy it out right...get snagged in with some low down payment and can afford a monthly bill, so they go that way.

I did that once with a motorcycle...by the time I paid if off I coulda bought a house!

  2. Being fairly close to the Chicago metro area I get to work in the outskirts once in a while...Joliet area mainly. Most everyone up there has a Nextel...except me. The company I work for usually has them and I hear the company drivers always yackin about everyone beeping eachother...

The only thing I wish my CB had is the roger beep, just to be a richard head sometimes.

I do have a Nextel 2 way as well..but some of the guys that show up on a seasonal route...may not be showing up the next day, plus my Nextel is via Blackberry..which is almost ridiculous with the buttons and fussing. Its nice...but during leaves, Im in and out of the truck, getting dirty..I almost dont want to mess up the blackberry.

The CB is good because its in the truck, not the workers hands...which means its stayin in the truck!! (you get some interesting people on leaf route here in NJ)

I also used to go off road in my Jeep and before that had a K5 Blazer for mud. I had a G.E. in there that was pretty good, but lost the antenna constantly, even when it was screwed to my mirror it got snapped off. CB Radio was really good in that situation as well.

  3. I realize this question sounds a little off kilter but with the advent of cell phones, nationwide calling plans, internet availability most places, is the CB radio still the necessity it was during the 70's, and 80's? Or is it a left over novelty from those days?

Being born in the late 70's...CBs were kinda on their way out as far as being a novelty and things like that..I think anyway. My dad kept one in his 74 Monte Carlo and I always thought it was cool...

Then as time went on, I worked for the Dept. Of Public Works and all the trucks are equipped with CBs, it made life so much easier to just pick up the mic and figure out where you were needed or hear what was going on.

Now being involved with dump trucking and stuff...a cell phone blows compared to a CB...if you're on a leaf route in a big town like Newark NJ, and basically its like 5 tandems and a bucket loader..it makes life waaaaaay easier to just pick up the mic, say it once and have everyone hear it.

Not to mention its still cool as hell and lines from Smokey & The Bandit always sound better over CB radio :thumb:

  4. It looks like a cross between a PT Cruiser on steroids and a proto type for a Hot Wheel that never made it. That is one incredibly ugly truck!! But hey, to each their own, if you dig it and it gets the job done.....

  5. In the timeframe you mention:

The largest Mack inline six cylinder would be a 672 cubic inch engine.

The largest non Mack inline six cylinder would be the 893 cubic inch 1693TA, 3406 Caterpillar engines.

The largest Mack V8 engine would have been the 998 cubic inch ENDT-1000/E-9 series.

I have no knowlege of a 3408, or 3412 series Caterpillar engines being offered in the R series.

Performance exhaust is up to your imagination. There is the option of no mufflers, Riker, Donaldson, and a few others but I'm not akin to aftermarket performance mufflers for heavy truck usage. Most diesel mufflers are very free flowing and are "tuned" for different exhaust note/noise.

Faaaaaaaaaantastic info!! Thanks very much Rob!

  6. Hi, excuse the question if it seems a little silly, I'm new here.

What is the largest engine used in R Models? Throught the 1970's to be exact.

Also on a side note, what is the best aftermarket exhaust, performance wise, that would go with such an engine.

    Thanks in advance!!

    Jess

  7. Is there any definitive exhaust stacks/pipes for R models?. I saw a guy with an Autocar that said he had a single stack that was 5" and went to dual 8". He uses the truck for basic dumping and also runs it recreationally at the diesel nationals.

Also, as far as engine performance goes, I will soon be in the market for a truck that will work, but I'd like to try my hand at some of the drag racing at the diesel nats. What is the best engine to get the best of both worlds? I need it to be a work truck 1st and foremost...but if I can squeeze a little more "oompf!" outta it just for fun, what do you suggest? Best motor to start with? And easiest, most bolt on power would be best. Again its gonna be a work truck, so I dont want to lay it up with major internal work.

Thanks in advance to anyone who might answer these questions!

  8. Hi guys,

I just found this site in my searches, and after looking around a bit I thought it might be a great place to sign up!

I'm 32 yrs old, living in sunny North Jersey and love Mack Trucks.

I dont own a truck yet, but right now I have a small rubbish removal business and after this horrible economy bounces back my goal is to have a roll off and a dump. I should say that its Mack DUMP trucks I love.

My friends dad had about 5 of them, all R model and DMs. I had been wanting to get my Class B and was hating life working in a place that sandblasted old forklifts. After hrs a few years back I would go down to his shop which was pretty much were I grew up, and just hung around the trucks, spinning a wrench when I could. The more I hung around the trucks the more I started looking at them the same way I did muscle cars and the dirtbikes of my youth...just an awesome machine.

I got my class B and was all legal, perfect timing too. I got a call the Sunday before Thanksgiving asking if I could drive a tandem on the leaf route for a day. I called out sick to my regular job and got down to the shop on Monday morning. When I got there 2 trucks were idiling in the dark cold autumn morning. It was picture perfect...my town puts up their Christmas ornaments on the street lights pretty early (which is fine by me!)...I could hear the rumble of diesel motors, with the twinkle of Christmas lights gleaming on top of them in the dark of 5:30 AM.

I got myself inside the warm cab and put her in gear...nothing, I mean nothing felt better then being in that R Model following one right in front of me down the streets I grew up on, under those beautiful Christmas lights.

I worked one day on the leaf route and realized..since high school I dont think I was ever really "happy" at a job, and I LOVED what I did today!!

Since then I have been a Mack fan!!...Unfortunatley he sold most of his trucks so I dont get to be around them, but I do have a small business that I'm trying to expand every day...I'm hoping in the next little while I can find an older R Model in working condition, do a restoration and throw some aftermarket goodies on it...then put her to work!!

Thanks for reading this, look forward to chatting with you all!
