  1. I live in NJ, near Newark which is a mecca of dump trucks, roll offs and waste disposal trucks. I have a CLEAN CDL, with a hazmat and tank endorsment...clean back ground, somewhat mechanically inclined, a registered business owner who is waiting on my own A901 which is a Solid Waste Transport Permit that set me back 3 grand in hopes of starting my own business. (if anyone knows anything about garbage and NJ, that permit is no easy feat to get!..should say something about my background right there!)

I got hurt on my last job (non truck related) and was let go right after surgery due to them closing the doors with the economy and all. Ive been staying afloat by doing some small demo and rubbish removal (I stress small)....the idea is to continue to grow and eventually go from a van and a pick up to a Roll Off....in the mean time I needed some work because as not even having a year as a business owner under my belt you arent pulling 40 hrs anytime soon.

Why the hell is every trucking, excavating, garage, wrecking and every other damn company that has to do with trucks telling me there isnt enough work to put me on??...I see the trucks out there everyday...yeah I know the economy sucks and all, but come on I've been at this for months! I'm more then qualified, eager, goal oreinted and I'm only 33 yrs old..I can still learn new tricks!!

Never in my life have I seen it so slow with dump trucks or roll offs....a few years ago I was working 40 hrs a week at a shop, then had more then one dump outfit offering me cash on saturdays to run dirt and leaves in a tandem....now? Nothing....When the hell is this gonna break?!

  2. Judging by the grocery store and hardware stores...you'd think Weather Channel was calling for the Apocalypse, not a few inches of snow. Calm down NJ, its just snow.

Either way, I'll take one of those puppies!

  3. Yes, the R-model came out in '65, the RD in '71, RWs in '78. B-models were discontinued in '66. R's were made until 1989, but variations of them were made after that. The RB model didn't come out until 1989, and were made until the end of the century...they might still make them, that's as far as the book goes. The CH came out in '88.

The RD had a higher weight rating. The Superliners had a different hood and huge grill to accomidate a bigger radiator to keep the V8s cool.

from the Mack book, "Driven for a Century"

Thanks for that!!!...It seems the RW slips through the cracks. I dont see them around too much..especially in dumps, maybe because of the weight rating?

I think its a real nice looking truck though..would love to see more of it.

  4. Shiney sides you mean? Some might have insulation on the sides...for hauling asphalt...covered with stainless steel or aluminum that's kept polished. I went cheap/lazy and did mine with galvanized. In the picture...(truck hasn't been this clean for quite some time...) is this what you're talking about?

Pretty much yeah thats it...I mean sometimes you see some so shiny it looked borderline chrome..but I think what you have is what Im talking about, it almost looks like shined up polished aluminum...

  5. I loooooooves me a GTA!!! I didnt have a GTA, but an 88 T/A with a 305 TPI..few little do-dads here and there, but man was that a fun car. Not only that I think that is one of the most handsome cars ever to leave detroit.

Honestly, GM in the mid to late 80's I think made some really cool stuff...The GTA, Grand National and the T-Type we're nice, the Monte Carlo SS..Olds Cutlass....hell I even like the Grand Prix from that era!

  6. Bottom line, is, different bikes have different uses. It ain't just "this or that", but rather what kind of riding you intend to do with it. For me in my younger years, a Harley would have killed me. Even today, it couldn't be the ONLY bike in the stable...but I'm not against having one in addition to the bike I've already got...although I'll probably get an XR650 before I get the full dresser. Looking at a CRF230M for the fiance, and it'd be a lot more fun to chase her on something like the XR. Like they say, it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast than it is to ride a fast bike slow. Besides, she's already got a little 100cc Honda dirt bike, so if we wanted to do some trail riding, we could throw her 100 and the XR in the truck and head out to the trails. :thumb:

Variety is the spice of life. B)

I hear that! I worked for a Honda/Yamaha dealer for 6 years and I couldnt even understand Harley back then. At the time I was heavily into Motocross and was riding a CR250 and a KX250 and also had a R6 and was test riding everything under the sun. Motorcycles to me were about tearing it up! Something I couldnt see on a Harley...I remember the owner even told me "these are great bikes, but they will never have fame a Harley does, just because of the name"

Now though, I'm seeing some of these Harleys and appreciating them waaaaay more. A Super Glide doesnt seem too expensive, the motors have changed alot with EVO and there are a ton of aftermarket performance bolt on power to waste money on. Even with all the aftermarket stuff and extensive tunning...out of the box you arent even gonna catch a glimpse of an R1 or GSX-R....but its apples and oranges.

I wouldnt buy a Mack if I was planning on running the Indy 500. Apples and Oranges.

Look up any Harley video or review on youtube and there are TONS of people saying how your a joke if you ride a HD...I never got that...theres no point in ripping a guy for riding a HD if your a CBR owner...

I dunno if anyone saw that new liquid cooled XR Harley put out.....looks nice and suposedly performs pretty well...then again I cant see it outdoing any of Japanese sport bikes.

  7. Yeah man underground rap is where it's at. I'm so sick and tired of mainstream music cause it's all the same...POP and it's garbage if ya ask me. Nothing beats the old stuff that is for sure!

Yeah, LCN with Cypress and the original House Of Pain combined is cool and there are alot of others out there staying off the radar...but its good and its out there.

  8. Heavy Metal - Everything from the brutal Anaal Nathrakh to Zyklon and everything in between.

Classical - Mozart, Chopin, Bach etc.. Great for just listening to when driving in traffic, clams you down.

Classic Rock - Zeppelin, Rush, Billy Joel, and many more.

Amen to this!!! I grew up with early KISS, Maiden, Priest, King Diamond..then got into Slayer, Pantera...then Cannibal Corpse, Emperor, Darkthrone.....NOW I listin to everything from Deep Purple to Mayhem....I listin to alot more then metal though and a ton of "real" punk...Misfits, Samhain, Minor Threat..

Theres a TON of good underground Hip Hop out there..check out Ill Bill, Necro, LCN..etc

I like old school everything, from N.W.A. to Elton John...for a short time I was music major, I guess thats why I have such a wide range.

For all you metal guys, check out my band..I am the Vocalist...PLAY LOUD!!! : myspace.com/lockedcore

  9. I try not to regret too much, but man..I got 2, and both of em were GM's. My very 1st car was an 81 Trans Am, it was a 4 speed with a 305. Not that a 305 is a 350..but man was that a fun little car and really gave me no trouble at all...except with the posi-traction in bad weather, but hey it is what it is. I burnt out a clutch, but that was about all I had to replace on that car.

The 2nd was a 1988 K5 Chevy Blazer a fuel injected 350 with a 3 speed and low gear..when I called around trying to get the inside scoop on it, I was told the same thing twice. "That transmission does not belong in that blazer, it's for a work truck and it mustve been special ordered like that." Either way it had Ranchos, 33" tires, Cragars, Hooker headers, a Flow Master cat back, KN intake and that was about it...that truck was a beast! And I couldnt bust it....until Christmas eve 1999.....2 weeks prior I had done some mudding in it. Everything was fine, but while driving to do last minute gift buying at the mall I noticed the steering wheel had play in it. Before I could say "whats up with the play in the wheel"..the damn right front snapped off and I went across the road like a on 3 wheels as I watched my 33" tire go across the street and not hit any cars thankfully. I skidded out into the woods and lucky aside from a rotor, the hub and all the front end hardware no one got hurt or anything,...though you can still see the spot my rotor dug into the road.

Never again will I have a daily driver thats also a toy.

Still though...damn I miss that Chevy!

  10. Work trucks, muscle cars, 4x4's...whats your pick? Have at it boys...

(for the record, Im a big F body guy..Trans Ams to be exact, but my dad and grandfather both swore by Ford as a work pick up..as much as I love a Chevelle, Firebird, Caddy and Camaro..I have to say, plowin snow or anything else..work truck wise, a Ford never failed me.)

  11. All the vehicles I've owned never had the ac work. I don't need ac only ac I got is 2 windows and whatever speed limit it is but I got to have heat though.

All those old cars I had, 1st thing to go was the AC when I got em. Now thats the only thing I wish worked.

Last years leaf route I was in a 77 R Model dump and the damn heat didnt shut off...I'd rather have it cold in the cab then deal with that again.

  12. I used to mess around with old chevy's, constantly swapping out parts, turning 3 trucks into one. But I digress, I had kids and bought a semi...which is almost like a third kid. The time for messing around with stuff has passed and I bought 'new', an '05 Chevy doody-max. I change the oil and grease it and that's enough.

I understand this. My 1st car was an 1981 Trans-Am, then I had a 1968 Mustang, which got traded for a 1980 Trans Am (which had a DOG 301 in it..horrible, HORRIBLE motor) then an 88 Trans-Am...and finally a K5 Blazer that was pretty solid..F.I. 350, 3 speed with granny low, riding on 33's it was fun...but any time you have cars or trucks like this...your doing work, changing parts, blowing suspension etc.

I traded in my wrench turning from cars to dirtbikes...and bought a Jeep Cherokee Sport. I bought it used maybe 4 years ago, with 70k on it and now it has 136,000. I keep it clean and doing the basic maintenance and it runs like a champ...not to mention it is a BEAST in the snow. The only issues Im having is that it needs a new A/C compressor and every once in awhile when I put it in 4x4 it lags getting back into 2WD. I usually have to play the with the wheel for a min then it goes back. The indicator says its in 2WD, but you can feel the fronts spinning...hopefully its a just a vaccum line or something.

Either way, no payments, no problem! I change my fluids and dont beat on it and it runs like a champ...I have no reason to get rid of it, my next "new" vehicle will have 2 wheels...the next pre owned will be an R Model Dump.

It aint a hot rod...but man it runs nice and I cant bust it!...and I owe nothing!

  13. Jersey don't buy that Cobra with the Bluetooth, I've heard them things were pure JUNK and I can believe it too. If it's like the 29's with the nightwatch, weather and soundtracker then it'll be junk. I don't see why anyone would need weather and a soundtracker when the NB/ANL works just fine. The Bluetooth will cut your radio's performance in half in most cases just like the weather and soundtracker does. I rather have me a 29 Classic, besides like Rowdy says that nightwatch produces way too much glare for my taste and Cobra uses tactical controls for that reason. Besides most Cobra's even if they are the Classic or the Classic with the nightwatch and soundtracker are set up just the same. The only additions I would want in a radio is a echoboard and talk back which I'm surprises doesn't replace the Delta Tune and I would by one in a heart beat, I don't need that Bluetooth, nighwatch, or soundtracker. Besides the only knobs I reach for most of the time is the squelch and volume.

Thanks man, I appreciate the input....It was a toss up between that and the General Lee...http://www.cbradiomagazine.com/ gave them both pretty good reviews but they dont really get into them in the truck world. I'm sure theyre both fine on a desk somewhere...how theyre gonna hold up in the truck is another story.

    Thanks for everyones info..

  14. And this is a very large part of the world economies problem. Credit is much too easy to acquire, operate, and exist upon. Young and old people alike tend to justify the cost of something by the amount of the monthly payment, rather than the true cost of ownership.

In our area even the fast food restauraunts and grocery stores are now taking plastic! Convienient maybe, but the lions share of the populace does not pay that card off monthly and no regards are given to the "true cost" of the purchase.

I can't speak for everybody but I don't reach into my pocket, pull out a lone five dollar bill, and spend ten!! I'm not a smart man by any means, but that just doesn't add up.

Another problem is the "expectations" of the populace or need. When is the last time you seen a new Mack, Pete, Kenworth, International, etc. where air conditioning, or power steering was an option at additional cost? You probably won't because it would be a hard sell to the manufactures. Even the vehicle corporations have been purchasing up the audio manufacturers and installing their systems for years.

There are deep rooted problems fueled by greed, credit, market share and the like, that need correction applied. The current democratic machine in power seems to enjoy throwing money at the symptoms rather than the cure. Now an out of work individual doesn't need to actively look for employment as his unemployment benefits have been extended yet again; Yet go to most any large retail establishment and attempt to find an employee that knows their ass from a hole in the ground! This type of job is usually "below them", (meaning skilled labor). Take that unearned compensation away, and that job at the retailer just might deserve a second look.

I think there is plenty of work out there. One just needs to be hungry enough to do it.

    Rob

Well said, a bit off topic but to take off where your last paragraph left off, funny story and a true story. I had shoulder surgery at the end of Feb and was on disability till about Aug when the Dr. finally cleared me to return to work. During the time on disability the place I was working at was facing tough times and fired me. Which means in order to keep up with my physical therapy...I now had to buy my own health insurance...on what the state disability was giving me. (good thing for being smart enough to have a savings account.)

Anyway in the time when I have been "down and out" I had registered as an LLC to start a rubbish removal company and was making some extra cash "taking out garbage" while looking for a real job.

Last week I finally got a call to be interviewed for a GREAT job working at a truck dealer that sells and services, Volvo, Autocar, Freightliner, Western Star etc...while I was having my interview with the manager, the guy hears my whole story and goes "Hey when does your unemployment run out?" I said.."soon, but I think I can get an extension..and I'll probably need it" He then told me this..which, man...if my old man were around and he heard this, his head would explode...the manager then says "you know, I had a few guys come in here looking for work, and when I said I would give them a chance, they asked if I could wait until their unemployment ran out....they actually DONT want to work until they absolutley cant get more money from the Govt"......the rest of my personal story should be posted somewhere else in the forums, but with what youre

saying about extensions and stuff you are right on the money.

I have been on my ass since Feb, working on the side, saving for the Christmas season, saving for bills, saving for a roll off so I can get my side work legitimate and busting my ass trying to get a "real" job....I cant believe their people out there who can live off the few hundred bucks a week that dont want to work and are being rewarded for it!!...Drives me friggin mental!!

Like my dad used to say..."some people just need a boot in the ass".

  15. Nope. Don't need no stinkin' weather band sitting in a truck. Want to know if it's raining/snowing/sunny/windy/etc...? Look out the windshield. Want to know what the temperature is like? Roll down the window.

You get A,B,C,D,E, and F. D is the CB channels. You also have AM and FM. You have enough channels to find one nobody else is on if you are running with someone who has a similar radio. I'm pretty sure the General Lee is similar to the Connex...not sure which model...I'm thinking the 3300.

Only thing I wish it had was a freq. meter like my Galaxy 959. You can buy 'em to plug in separate, though.

Thanks for the info...yeah man, the websites selling em are all comparing it to the Connex 3300 but saying the G.L. is actually a few bucks cheaper.

  16. Get a steel whip antenna, not those junk fiberglass ones. I've used the Wilson 2000 in the past and got great use out of it...I just can't see paying $60-$70 for an antenna when I can buy a 102" whip for $15-$20 that works just as well. The nice thing about steel whips is that they can take serious abuse. My 102" whip mounted on my lower mirror bracket reached 15'6" when I first put it on. I've been under 13'7" bridges at 60 mph...and even a 12'6" bridge at 45 mph. Yeah, smacks the snot out of the bridge and keeps on working. After a while, the end starts to curl around and you can either straighten it back out or just leave it. Still works either way.

...and I just looked at the box for my Cobra 29 BT and it says "Made in China".

You ain't likely gonna find a CB radio made in the USA. If you do, let me know. :thumb:

Stupid question Rowdy...does that General Lee have a weatherband on it??...The only reason I ask is because when I shop online, the other radios all make a point of saying the weatherband is a feature, the General Lee says "6 band positions". So I'm unsure if that is a feature that comes with it. Thanks in advance..
