I'm new here so not entirely sure if this is the right thread to post this in but I was hoping this might be the right group to reach out to.
I’m trying to identify the exact issue/date of a Mack Bulldog Magazine article from the late 1920s and am hoping someone here might recognize it or have access to the archives.
The article is titled:
“From Four Dollar a Week Stable Boy to Owner of 82 Motor Trucks”
It profiles Edward (“Eddie”) Thompson, founder of E.A. Thompson, Inc., a New York-based trucking and forwarding company.
The article states Thompson is “32 years of age.” He was born September 1894, which would place publication most likely in 1927 (possibly late 1926–early 1928 depending on timing). It appears to be a standard Mack customer feature profile.
I've attached a photo of the a cut out of the original article.
For context, E.A. Thompson, Inc. was a fairly substantial Manhattan operation:
Founded in 1921
Involved in trucking/hauling, truckmen & forwarders, stevedoring, paper transport, and general contracting (including work on the Chrysler Building)
Had contracts with B&O Railroad, New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad, and West Virginia Pulp & Paper
Fleet growth: ~80 trucks by 1923, ~82 at time of article, ~105 by 1928
By the late 1920s they were reportedly operating exclusively Mack trucks
Founder died in 1942; company declined by the 1960s under family ownership
What I’m trying to find:
Exact issue of The Mack Bulldog (volume/number and date)
Any additional pages from the article
If anyone has access to Mack Bulldog issues from the mid-to-late 1920s, or knows how the publication was indexed/numbered, I’d really appreciate the help.
Separately, I’m also trying to locate any photos of E.A. Thompson trucks or fleet lineups. The company operated under several name variations:
E.A. Thompson, Inc.
Edward A. Thompson, Inc.
E.A. Thompson Trucking
Edward A. Thompson Trucking
Given the size of the fleet (100+ Mack trucks by the late 1920s), I suspect photos may exist in trade publications, railroad transfer yard shots, waterfront/stevedoring scenes, or construction photography—but possibly not labeled by name.
If anyone has come across fleet photos, Mack customer features, or even unidentified NYC truck lineups from that era, I’d really appreciate any leads.
