Any leads or suggestions on where I can get a windshield weather strip and lock strip?

Thus far my searching has found infinite r model gaskets but none for the f-model.

    thanks

If you haven’t had any luck finding anything, contact Matt at restorationspecialties.com as they have hundreds of window and windshield rubbers and may have something close to what you need. I needed new vent window rubbers for the 74 Brockway I’m restoring so I inquired if he had anything close to what I needed. He asked me to email him pictures and sizes of what I had, and they actually had something nearly identical to what I needed. Just a suggestion, maybe they have something close to the F model.

Go to the ATHS Northeast Ohio Chapter website, northeastohiochapterofaths.com, or contact their chapter president Richard Stevens, ops90th@gmail.com, He will have the information you are seeking as to which hoops you must jump thru. Larry Freightrain should also have some other phone numbers for you to call.. They are a good bunch of guys and someone will help you.

Glad to see an informational topic on this subject. I’ve been given the run around by my local BMV, it’s almost like they don’t like to give out historic plates. Lots of “grey” area too on certain things. Going to get in touch with the ATHS NE Ohio and get all the proper info.

Youngstown Bulldog, have you noticed that Rolling Rock doesn't taste the same since bought by Anheiser Busch? Maybe it's just my imagination!

BillyT, I kinda thought that in the beginning too, but now I wish I had saved a few bottles of the old stuff to compare because I forget! it's a shame they went from painted-stenciled bottles to a sticker!

Two stick 12 spd.  There was one for sale on here last fall?  I'm sure someone that knows more about them, but I'm guessing it is the early version and the air shifted one was later?

I see...yea I had never seen that before so I wanted to ask. I'm guessing the stick closest to the driver could be LO and DIR, and the stick with the air shifter could be 1-5, Rev, etc?

  5. Has anybody ever seen a two-stick setup as shown in the attached pic? It's in an R model tractor. I've never seen a two stick set up with an air shift...just wondering how it would be possible, and if it was something common or it's just somebody's "creation". Thanks

Youngstown Bulldog,do you remember JVMcnicholas  and Toms Express?

Didn't McNicholas liquidate back in the early 80's having something to do with a wildcat strike?? Then the grandson of McNicholas started AIM Lease or something? I might be wrong. But I don't recall Tom's Express.

ENDT 675 was the engine stamping/identification for the 673 CID 237 HP Maxidyne and the engine code was 85.

An R-685 truck would be powered by a 237 HP engine ENDT 675.

sounds good, thank you...sometimes i get a little thrown off with the different names and all.

The "Thermodyne" and "Maxidyne" are both 673, (672 and change) in displacement in your example. The "Maxidyne" was a different tuning calibration to the injection pump to allow a flat but high torque rise at very low rpm to allow a five, or six speed transmission to keep shifting down. Gold paint was used to clarify the "Maxidyne" from the "Thermodyne" series.

thanks for your reply...makes sense, the transmission in the truck mentioned above is a 5 speed.

  9. For my own information...

I read about someone’s 1971 R model described as having “a 673 Mack engine with turbocharger, 237 Hp, gold engine”.....Is the 673 a thermodyne? Doesn’t gold only apply to Maxidyne? Just looking for some clarification. Thanks.

Hi, new member here. I'm looking for a 1970s era U686ST (or U685ST)....tandem axle, prefer Maxitorque two stick 6 spd low hole or standard 5 spd coupled to a hi-torque rise Maxidyne. Any tips or leads is much appreciated. Thanks!

hey welcome to BMT...I'm kind of a rookie to BMT myself, but did you ever consider attempting to "put one together" so to speak? Like start from the frame/chassis - find one, start putting things together and go from there. Of course, it would be a lot easier to find an entire truck intact. A small landscaping material distributor near me has an older tandem axle Mack that pulls a dump trailer in the yard, and looks to be a U-Model...I've talked to the owner, he swears up and down that it's really a mid 80s R685 frame/chassis with a 1970's U-Model cab and hood. I'm not totally sure if that's all possible, or if it would even fit together properly, so hopefully someone else can share some input on that. Just trying to help out.

  11. Hello. Recently, someone showed me a local advertisement for a mid-70's U686ST...the seller included the following statement in the advertisement: "...this U686ST is basically a short version of the R686ST just with an off-set cab. It has a 237 Mack engine and 10 speed transmission." I'm guessing the "237 Mack engine" he's referring to is the ENDT-675. I don't know a lot about the U models (aside from the off-set cab, short bumper to B.O.C. length, and lighter frame/axles as compared to the R model) so I am just wondering if the comparison statement with the R686ST is accurate. Also, I did not know that a 10 speed transmission would work well with the 237....was installing a 10 speed transmission a good move by the previous owner? I had just always assumed that the 5 spd or two-stick 6 spd transmissions were more common with that particular engine.

On EM's for example, an EM6-275 (max torque 1038 @ 1020 RPM) could be coupled to a TRL 1076  5 speed transmission.

You can pick up R model operations manuals off ebay.

Having multiple reverse gears is an excellent feature of the 107.

sounds good, i'm keeping my eye on Ebay for those in decent condition... www.allvintagetrucks.com has a good number of mack manuals (as well as others), some are in good shape, some are stained etc. i did have luck finding a 6 cylinder tune up spec book and an E6 2 valve 672cid manual from mack's website.

  13. Thank you for the info, much appreciated. Yea I’m not sure about the EM6 and EM7, so I’ll have to stand by for future info on that one.

As far as the 6 spd manual you mentioned, is there a item number or something for the manual? I wouldn’t mind looking online for one to purchase. It would probably be beneficial for me to have one.

Good deal on the driving information. I just wasn’t sure about the possibility of using low/dir in each forward gear.

  14. Hello,

I'm looking into restoring an older R model. I'm still kind of "new" to Mack so I have a few quick questions I'd like to ask on here to make sure I'm on the right track...

    A) on the two-stick Maxitorque 6 spd transmissions (TRXL 107 and TRXL 1071), the shift patterns for the main and aux are as follows, correct?

       2 4      R  LO
    1 3 5         DIR

B.) on the early models (TRDXL-107 and 1070) the Rev would be on the main stick and the aux would only have Lo and Dir?

    C) ENDT-675/676, EM-6, and EM-7 engines are all Maxidyne hi-torque rise engines? Any of which would need to be driven the same way when meshed with one of the 5spd or 6spd Maxitorques mentioned above? (run it up to 2100, neutral, call home, shave, eat a sandwich, light a cigar, put it in gear around 1200, accelerator thru the floor, make sure jet black smoke rolls out the stack, and repeat for each gear.)

    D) with the two-stick 6 spd transmissions mentioned above...would you have LO in every gear, or just 1st?

Thanks and I appreciate any info that can be provided to me!

  15. hello, thanks for your reply....well, two engines would be in mid-70's R models -- an ENDT-675 and an ENDT-676 and one engine from a 1981 R model -- EM6-285.  Is the EM6 the same engine as the ENDT's, just newer engine nomenclature? Would that EM6 require a separate service manual? As for the transmissions, two have the 5 spd Maxitorque, and one has the 6 spd Maxitorque (low hole).

  16. hello...where would i be able to find service manuals for the older Maxidyne wide power range engines (endt-675/676) and the Maxitorque 5spd/6spd? i've checked ebay and haven't had any luck with manuals that are in-tact and in decent shape. figured someone on here may know of other places to check. i've contacted Mack directly, but they won't reply. thanks!
