  1. Say thebeast weighs 16 tons with scrap at $250/ton (that's roughly the price here in Ontario). That's $4000. BUT, you gonna throw that thing in the back of a pickup and haul it on down to the wreckers? Even if you hire a crane and a rig capable of hauling the beast, how much is going to be left of the $4000? About what would be a reasonable expectation by the company to have the truck gone as is where is. $2000 tops maybe?

There is a huge cost to scrapping a rig like that old truck.

Point out the economics to the company and get a buddy to help you use your R, even with a pulling rig for your fifth wheel, hook onto the beast, haul her home and break out the beer and barbeque. Don't ignore the possibility that the company just wants rid of the liability of having derelict equipment sitting around, which is much, much higher than $4000 and they might, just might, not even be interested in the salvage value. So that would be like ... free truck ... except for getting her home .... and beer.

Well these are all definitely good points. Especially the BBQ and beer! But yes I completely agree that I'm sure there is going to be a cost of having it scrapped. I will ask around a little tomorrow when I get to work, what kind of chance I would have of getting it. Transporting it shouldn't be a problem, just whether or not they will get rid of it. It would really be a fun project, I think my biggest concern though would be the cost of tires.

  2. If the owner's spend some money on promotion, propose that if they give you the truck, you will restore it complete with company logo as a promotion vehicle with, of course, the "o/o jpavao" just so as everyone is clear who owns it and put that old good guy back in such nice condition.

Can you legally drive one of these trucks down a public road?

If I could do that I would absolutely love it! After I finish my r model of coarse, but I think that would be a fun project. Unfortunately I think the chances of that happening would be near impossible. It's a shame too because I'm sure it's got potential in there. I'll have to try to grab some pictures of it Monday.

  3. Barry has the original style wings gauges. also Stewart Warner still carries them or they are available on ebay. BCR Al on here has the correct paint code for the earlier R models . its a GM color match, no metallic at all. think its GM code 503 Dupont.Centari. the 65-70 R models with the Corvette dash were a mint green color, 70-72 had a nasty olive drab color usually.

Great thanks for the info! Who is Barry that you say has the original style gauges? And as for the paint thank you, I didn't realize there was that much of a difference. I will look into it to make sure on the paint code.

  4. Well Ive finally begun the restoration on my 66 R600. Im hoping to have it done by the beginning of summer, and I have a lot of work ahead of me so I figured I should start somewhere. I started on the interior today, gutting the dash so that i can rewire the truck and clean the mess the mice have made in there over the years. Since I plan to rewire everything, I think I am going to switch over to a neg ground system just for simplicity of adding anything later. From what I understand, to convert to neg ground, I have to

    -switch battery leads to starter

    -reverse the amp meter leads

    -reverse temp gauge leads

-reverse the connections at the heater motor

-install an alternator with a rectifier for Neg ground, unless it is a floating ground alt.

    Am I forgetting anything?

Also, the truck has some original gauges, but some have been replaced with aftermarkets. I would like to have all matching gauges, so I was wondering If anyone knew of any places that may do gauge restoration at a resonable cost? I could find the missing original gauges and send them all out to be restored, or does anyone know of an aftermarket gauge manufacturer that sells gauges that would work in these trucks (air psi, 3k tach, etc). I have seen some "old school" looking gauges that look really sharp but they dont make the appropriate gauges that I need like previously metioned.

And one other question, I am going to repaint the interior the original mack green, I was wondering if the R models used the same green color as the B models? Ive heard the newer the truck, the less metallic the paint will have, due to being what was left from the batches of paint the factory had, is that correct?

Thanks in advance for any input

    -Justin

  5. Thank you, and actually I'm planning on building a small flatbed dump with stake pockets and removable sides. I think the flatbed will look good on it once it's done and it will still be usable with sides on it. Hopefully I can start the rest of the restoration within the next few weeks, I'm working on finding sources for parts first.
