  1. Hi All, I have a 1998 Mack RD truck with an (electric) e7 engine that will start normally but engine goes off on idle. I am in a part of the world where there is no luxury of experienced mechanics or reliable Mack dealerships. The technicians at the Mack dealership I tried last couldn't fix a problem an ordinary street-side mechanic eventually helped fixed. Someone suggested there could be problem with the brain box but nothing happened when another brain box was installed. Another guy who is supposed to come help diagnose the problem says servicing the truck could be the solution, and that the problem may be due to clogged filters or something close to that. Not sure if the latter make sense to anyone in the house. Any input or suggestion will help. Thanks. After getting around for more details, I learn that two days before the problem started, traces of water was discovered in the fuel tank. Could this be the source of the problem? If so what steps can one take to rectify this?
  2. A `98 RD dump that was almost been put on the road after a long period of inactivity is spewing white smoke after the engine is started. The turbo charger is slightly draining oil at the connection point. In addition the engine oil pressure won`t gauage after adding 2 gallon of oil. Is the oil too low or is it that the turbo charger is faulty? Could this be responsible for the white smoke from the exhaust? Mechanic recommended installing a new turbo charger but want to get other opinion before doing that.

  4. Hello All, I’d joined this forum few days ago due to a (steering wheel) problem with an (`97) RD dump I own. I have three other RDs (a 91, 98, and 99, not currently operating though) and planning to buy more. I am typically not a truck guy. I own a biotech and knowledge transfer company that operated for a very short period in Canada (cellsenvsystems.com; bipog.com). I took a break having moved to the US few years ago but the company is currently incorporated in Texas. Though will be ``jump-starting`` the company before end of the year by investing in the currently booming construction industry in West Africa (specifically Nigeria). There are several huge projects going on there (e.g. ekoatlantic, lekki free trade zone and airport, Lagos metroline, etc. Please google any of these). However, if you are involved in haulage in that part of the world there are several hitches. One of these is that mechanics there are stuck with older models of Mack with manual transmission (often R models). Not the electric types. Typically Mack and other models exported from the US or Europe will only last for few years on the road (maybe?) because most of the trucks are owned by individuals or small companies that do not have access to highly trained mechanics and the required technology. Mack (USA) only work with one dealer over there (lanreshittu.com) that do not really care about small guys with one or two trucks or older models of Macks. In the last two months, all the earning from the 97 RD (exported in Q3 of 20010) has been expended on repairs and not out of the hole yet. The success of the business will rely on having knowledgeable mechanics available. So I am looking out for an individual or a company over here that could help provide training and consulting to pass some knowledge on to folks over there. I am really not sure at this point how this will work out since it is something that I started thinking about only recently. The potential impact could be huge. For example, it almost took several hours to replace few tires of the RD recently because this was done manually. Here, the same thing took minutes prior to exporting the truck. Now I am looking into purchasing tire changing/vulcanizing equipments that will be providing services in trucks park/garages over there. So if you are an individual or company that is willing to work with me. I could be reached at alambo@cellsenvsystems.com (or adeoflagos@hotmail.com). You can also respond through this forum. Individuals will need to show proof of experience or expertise. It will also be good if you have been involved any type of formal training for Macks.
  5. Learn that driver was still able to drive with the stiff steering wheel but it get difficult when he`s making a turn. Moreso, the ``poor`` guy has a bad arm. Got hurt in a previous truck related accident and he is extremely cautious about a potential accident happening due to this new problem. I
  6. @ Rob I am actually thousands of kilometers away from the location of the truck (sorry if i sounded am right by the truck). So I have to relay this to the individual responsible for operating the truck with the mechanic and they have to get back to me by text messages. This is the steps taken so far (prior to relaying your message to them). Four (used) steering pump have been tried. Initially the pressure rose and higher than when the when the old steering pump was in place. But this did not help. Was told the mechanic now observed that the steering box is faulty (not sure how) and that it is hot. He now thought this steering box could be the problem. Anyway I have relayed the previous recommendation to them. Will wait to see if their response will to your suggestion.
  7. Hi All, I have a '97 RD690 that has been giving me problem lately. The steering wheel is always stiff when making turns. We recently discovered that fluid might be leaking and this was rectified. Problem did not go away and we changed the power steering pump two days ago. But problem surfaced again earlier today. Any useful advice on this will be appreciated.
