This is another Tom B. photo. He said this photo was given to him, but he could not remember who gave it to him or
when it was taken. He recalled that this was at a local truck show probably when this unit was new, so if anybody
can figure out the year of this truck that is probably when this was taken.
My dad thinks it was 67 or 68 he said the had them when he came home from the army. The fiberglass hoods were out but Greco still bought the steel nose trucks

What gave me this idea is the Caterpillar Certified rebuild program. Cat dealers completlety dissasemble a machine like a D8 Dozer and rebuild it with rebuilt componets, new wirring, hoses, engine, trans, final drives, paint and so on. When finished the machine is like new and cheaper than a brand new replacemnt. My thoughts are because of The FET tax on a new truck and all the problems with new emmisions. It may be worth it to rebuild an old truck that I already own opposed to buying new. The Truck has howls, whines and vibrations. There is play in componets and oil leaks. It has given me exceptional service but its time to rebuild it or get rid of it. I agree with the if it aint broke dont fix it mentalety but when something shows signs of excessive weat to me it is basicly broke and needs to be fixed.

What do you guys think it would cost to totally rebuild a 96 RD688. Minus the engine ( was rebuilt 120,000 miles ago). Just the cost of parts no labor. Id like to rebuild trans, rears front end steering gearbox ect. I have considered a new truck but between the emissions and all the taxes it may be worth wild to rebuild my old truck.

My 96 RD seemes to be getting louder and louder inside the cab. I have Dynamat on the whole floor but it is still loud. Has anyone done anything to lower the noise inside the cab of an R model

Has anyone had any luck with making a R model quieter inside of the cab ? Is there any sound deadening products that work well? I covered the floor in my 89 R model with Dynamat. It did not really help a lot. Why are CH models so much quieter?

Sorry there is no cheap way out
the syncros are prone to failure. The problem is useally in the back half of the trans. It is hard to find original parts for the back Mack offers updated syncros and gear hubs that help the problem with the original design You cant mix the new updated mack parts with some of the original parts so you have to buy every thing. Its around $1500.00
I had the back of my trans rebuilt and its ok It still makes a little noise during range shifts. Mack has an alternative shift pattern low 1 2 3 shift range then shift like a 5 speed mack on the high side You dont use the highest gear on the low side but you use the lowest on the high side I know this is hard to understand. Remember I am a driver not a writer. (note: this does not work with T2090B transmissions ) I shift mine like that and it seems to work good it is kind of weird at first but you will get use to it you can get a Remack factory rebuilt unit but they are around $4000.00 It kind of sucks but what are you gonna do?

I have a 89 R model with a 300 and a T2060. The truck needs motor work. The clutch is also bad so an in frame overhaul wont help my situation. I am going to pull the engine but I need someone to rebuild it. I am looking for a Mack engine rebuilder in the Chicagoland area. I rather not work with the mack dealers. I would appreciate any references. I think word of mouth is the best way to do business. If you have a good motor guy please let me know
