  1. Quite some time ago I put up a question as to why I couldn't split shift without severe grinding. The general consensus was that I should put a kit in the hand piece and the shifters on the box. I did this and nothing changed. I was at a loose end. What else could there be? Some months later I was driving when there was a huge gush of air out of the hand piece. On inspection one of the large O rings had slipped up the side of the barrel. this was the new barrel. I refitted the old barrel and continued on. This made me think that maybe the inside of the outer barrel was worn since the rest was new. I have just fitted a complete new hand piece and all the problems are gone. There must have been internal leakage in the hand piece which wasn't solved by re kitting it. The symptoms were problems with split shifting and difficult getting from forward to reverse when stationary. I hope this may be of help to anyone who is scratching their head with similar symptoms.

  2. This raises another point. I don't think the air filter is connected properly as there seems. Can you tell me how it is supposed to be plumbed in. If there is water damage what am I looking for?

Thanks so much for the input guys. I am having trouble getting this info locally!

  3. We have a R600. What is the correct way to do a gear shift from 2high to 3low? We used to be able to flick the switch then change the gear. Recently this does not seem to work as well as changing the gear then flicking the switch just before releasing the clutch. Do we have an air related problem?

On the stick there are 6 hoses numbered 1 to 6. On the gearbox there are 2 cylinders one larger than the other. they have numbers 1 to 4 on them. where should 5 & 6 go to. Which cylinder is low high. What is inside these cylinders? Do they have rubber seals that wear out?

The air goes though pressure reducers, can these cause problems?

    Any help greatly appreciated.

  4. What an incredibly small world we live in at times. Jeff who 's info was so helpful lives in the same town as me in Australia! I'm sure he would know the Mack I'm referring to. I believe it was bought for road train work originally. This would explain the steel butterfly bonnet. These days it used on a low loader. It is a great old truck to drive with a wide load because it handles so well.

  5. We have a R600 which has developed a problem when changing from high in one gear to low in the the next highest gear. We used to be able to flick the switch then change to the next gear and it would be in the low range immediately. Now the split is very slow and it is easier to leave it in high, change gears then flick it to low just before putting the power back on. Any suggestions most welcome.
