  1. Well I got Bertha out and had someone pull me down the road just to see if she'd turn over. The transmission was fine but wouldn't turn the motor, the clutch just started smoking. The last year she was registered was 1981 so it's really not surprising but I do know she was running when parked. She was actually inside at first and someone using the building decided to drag all of my grandads stuff outside thus the broken windows and extra rust. What's the best way to try and break the old 673 loose?

  2. I drive a tow truck for a living so I'm familiar with air brakes and all. I've done enough research to understand the concept of how to shift the duplex but I don't imagine that will help much in reality. My biggest concern is getting a temporary fuel tank plumbed properly and being able to shut it down. I was able to find a post showing how the cutoff works so now I just have to find the time to tear the fenders down and make sure that its working before we try to pull it off. I think the brakes may be backed off from when it was towed across town years ago so if by some miracle she runs, we won't be driving. We're gonna pull her off with a wrecker so stopping won't be an issue...yet. Thanks for all the help. I know I'm gonna need a lot more.

  3. Hello. I have been reading and researching this forum for a few weeks now trying to learn about these trucks. Thanks for having a great site. This was my granddad's favorite truck for years, Big Bertha. He used it in Memphis until it became common to have hydraulic wreckers. The tandem axel is not original. It was added when the City of Memphis said heavy duty wreckers must have tandem axles, regardless of the weight of the vehicle. He also travelled the country in it, going as far as Florida and South Dakota to my knowledge. The data plate is missing and I can't find the chassis number due to the mountains of old grease and dirt that I haven't had time to scrape it off. The truck has been moved since these pictures were taken. I'll try to post more if anything progresses. Any info anyone has to offer as to the year or anything else would be wonderful.
