  1. Hey hatcity, I feel ya pain down in wpb. Just sold my superliner dump, cheap of course. Have 2 petes 2 internationals tractors, couple off piggybacks and 4 flatbed trailers trying to sell. Gonna take my KW and go on the road till this economy changes. I need steady work or i go stir crazy :pat:

  2. Well I did get a little time to work on truck Tuesday. Removed air line from rear of the cylinder that is next to the shift lever and now when toggle valve on dash is put in the "Extended Range" position it snaps in and shift lever is locked into low gear by the lock pictured in above post.

However the line removed from this cylinder is blowing steady air pressure which prevents the air cylinder from moving when it's connected. This at least tells me problem most likely is in on of the air valves on the side of transmission. One is a pressure reducing valve, doubt that would be the problem. Two others are I believe inversion valves, could be the problem area. The big problem now is it could be months before I get to touch the truck again!

I stopped at the local Mack dealer and they could not find any service information that showed an air shift like ours, their books only showed the transmission with a second shift lever to engage the Low Low range. They did copy me some pages out of the parts book on the arrangement we have so that may help some. I'll try to remember to post again when I have more information.

Off on vacation for a week so have fun here without me!

Ken, the constant air coming from that air line returns the shift fork to the normal position when you flip the air switch on the dash. The trick is the air pressure coming from the air switch has to be greater to engage the low hole shifter. Once you flip the switch to normal position that air pressure returns the the shift fork to direct hence the lock out releases the shifter. if that makes any sense :pat:

  3. If the blower does not work on the hi speed setting, then there's something else wrong.

The resistor is not part of the circuit when the switch is in the high speed position, so therefore the problem could be in the switch, motor, wiring, circuit breaker, or it could be a bad ground.

there is some sort of diode on the hot side of the resistor. if i cross each end and the fan switch is on high then the fan blows your hat off

  4. Yea, you would need a wire wound resistor. Either encased in ceramic or better yet, encased in an aluminum finned case to dissipate heat.

You would need allot of carbon resistors to get 30 watts and 1.2 ohms :P

Hey Hey, watch that fancy wordage, I am a owner operator and all my trucks are old enough to drink

  5. Hey Dunny, I had a parts man check that number out, it's still a good number and it's available (literally hundreds in Mack's warehouses). He told me probably around $5.00

i only have 1 mack dealer here. How would i go about getting it cause my dealer says that mack does not stock it anymore

  6. I am thinking a FLD freightliner may use the same one. If it ant you could rework the mount and it would. The FLD has 4 ter. on it.

I am going to take a pic of it and go to freightliner cause i think you is right

    Thanks Rich

PS high speed does not work with this resister.

  7. Okay, they look like the same kind of lock out I remember from the first MaxiTorque transmissions. I'm guessing that the notch in the shaft somehow locks into something when you engage low and prevents you from shifting to another gear. Looks like someone tried to override the lockout.

Had a driver many years have a truck run away on a hill, said he tried to down shift but never got it to go in gear. Funny thing the spiral twist in the drive shaft and the crushed lifters in the engine and exploded clutch tell me he sure did get it to go in to a lower gear!

that notch is where the detent ball sits!!

  8. Have a Super liner 1993 with the TRTXL 1070B transmission at work. Diver said he never needed to use the "Low Low" gear till working a paving job on a steep hill last week. Could not get the trans. to shift into "Low Low". It is actuated by a toggle switch type valve on dash. There is air getting to the valve on dash as it vents pressure for a split second when moving from one position to the next.

I don't have any books on this one. Would like to know which air cylinder on shift cover works the "Low Low" shift and which one of the several valves and or regulators on the bracket next to cover work it.

Would be real handy to have a diagram showing all those valves that also said which gear each controls.

I'll have a few hours Monday morning to look at this then I won't see truck again for weeks. Kind of tough trying to fix it when truck is 100 miles away on the road.

My guess is there is a gummed up valve or plugged vent line somewhere. I coould open dash and start tracing from the valve to the trans. but if I knew where the lines hooked on the trans. cover I would save a lot of time I don't have.

    Thanks Ken H

PS: Now if this was a good old 18sp. Quadraplex all you would need to do is grab the left lever and click it into Low Low in the Aux section! Guess I'm showing my age with that one!

The air piston the actuates that low gear is to the drivers side of the shift tower. The low hole will only work in 1st speed as there is a lock out preventing it to engage in any other gear. I had a simular problem so i removed the shift plate on top of tranny wich is the one that the shift tower connects to and low and behold the lock out was broke and the broke piece was probaly chewed up by the tranny. if i can figure out how to post a pic i have a good lock out mechanism and i will post it up. I learned a lot about this tranny in a very short time. Some of the experts on this site guided me through it so you came to the right place. HOOOAH!

  9. NAPA does them here. May be a bit pricey, but when the truck is sitting with the boom in the air, I don't mind paying.

Have a shop one street over from me that makes them. Reasonable price and seems like never closes. Can do SS lines.

I can check with him and see if he would ship. Just send fitting size, type and length. Believe he also has metric hoses.

I need to find a shop that can do steel lines, like 15 foot.

Hat, You have steel lines that run up your knuckle boom? As good of an operator that we think we are sometimes when we get cocky ,we catch a treee limb on a hose at the knuckle and that in turn tears up your piping correct? I use a shop in west palm called maco hose and rubber. If they dont have it then they dont make it. I have know these dudes forever back when i was land clearing and wood grinding. we had prentice 120 knuckles feeding the grinders and that was a common thing. Tel # 561 795 6200

  10. What's up guy's I just wanted to say hello....I'm from the Boston area & have been driving trucks for 5 years now, dump trucks mainly but I tried over the road for 1 year...Anyway's I just wanted to say just from reading a few pages I was hooked...This is an awesome site with very smart & knowledgable people...Thanks for letting me on because boy do I have questions

    where in boston??

  11. Two aliens landed in the Arizona desert near a gas station that was closed for the night. They approached one of the gas pumps and the younger alien addressed it saying, "Greetings, Earthling. We come in peace. Take us to your leader."

The gas pump, of course, didn't respond.

The younger alien became angry at the lack of response.

The older alien said, 'I'd calm down if I were you.'

The younger alien ignored the warning and repeated his greeting. Again, there was no response.

Pissed at the pump's haughty attitude, he drew his ray gun and said gruffly, "Greetings, Earthling. We come in peace. Take us to your leader or I will fire!"

The older alien again warned his comrade saying, 'You probably don't want to do that! I really think that will make him mad.'

'Rubbish,' replied the cocky, young alien. He aimed his weapon and opened fire. There was a huge explosion. A massive fireball roared towards him and blew the younger alien off his feet and threw him in a burnt, smoking mess about 200 yards away in a cactus patch.

Half an hour passed. When he finally regained consciousness, he refocused his three eyes, straightened his bent antenna, and looked dazedly at the older, wiser alien who was standing over him shaking his big, green head.

'What a ferocious creature!' exclaimed the young, fried alien. 'He damn near killed me! How did you know he was so dangerous?'

The older alien leaned over, placed a friendly feeler on his crispy friend and replied, 'If there's one thing I've learned during my intergalactic travels, you never mess with a guy who can loop his penis over his shoulder twice and then stick it in his ear.'

  12. No way in hell I'd let that truck go overseas.

    .

my brother said it would be unamerican to let that icon of a mack truck to leave the states. After a little thought (10 seconds) i think ya'll are right . That nice truck would have chickens and cow shit all over it. And just to think what smell in the cab would be from the steering wheel holder, Whew!! :pat:

this is the new steering whell turner mun!

  13. offered MORE than it's worth?

I will send a check for $75,000(US). please to return overage in the amount of $50,000

It is in pleasing to do business with you.

Truck like that would be trashed in two days there. You spent alot of time and money to get it right. Unless it has problems, I would hold on to it as long as you can.

Yep, dirt work is very slow. Just holding the truck is expensive. There is a fine line that at some point you have to call it.

Regarding hurricane work, I loaded three dump truck when in Texas after Ike. I pretty much moved a little all day. made same money as them, but less fuel used. I got 20-25% of the ticket.

If you are thinking about it, I already have a commitment from one company. Pretty much as soon as the winds die down, check house and family, check truck, fire it up and go. LOCAL only.

    Too old for chasing them.

sounds like a plan. I probably will have work as long there is someone with a pile of CASH to buy the truck. I have a couple of flatbed trailers w/piggyback fork lifts that i use,but that business is slow also. see at www.buddystransport.com

  14. few years back, dump trucke were stolen left and right. many found working dirt in miami area .Sure you remember that dunny. I guess now the scam involves haiti quake work

Insurance company PAID for an alarm system including install for my truck. Scum was also stealing aluminum wheels from trucks just so they had them.

Oh yeah, haitians come to yard sales, offer 50 cents for anything then toss stuff around while "looking"

While I'm at it, don't trust old people either. they steal and claim Alzheimers.

BTW- dunny, have you considered building up your box for hurricane work? Couple local guys built to carry 47 yds. One put it together quick and now has it rewelded and sitting in his yard just in case.

I have thought of this and would have to follow a truck like yours arund to get loaded. The problem is if these guys are for real they offered be way more than the truck is worth and work is so slow i might call them on it! As it goes i have some work for next week but have not worked with that truck for 2 weeks prior. I am going to see what happens. I am having trouble letting go with that truck to a country like that. It is a real cool truck and i have worked my but off getting everthing to work on it if ya know what i mean

  15. 2 haitian gentleman approached me today and asked if they could look at my superliner dump 1987. I said ok but dont touch anything in the cab. They had me open the hood and they checked it out and were surprised how nice the truck was and it was cold inside also. The stereo was playing a tobey kieth song i think and they had no idea what was up with that. they asked me if i would sell it and i asked what their plans were first before i answered them. they said it was going to be shipped to haiti to work on the earth quake. I started picturing 5 haitians trying to figure out how to start and stop this thing and most of all how to shift the 12 speed air shifter  after a couple of minutes, i gave them my card and said call me later that i will think about it.

    so in the end whatayado??

  16. Yes, the pedal comes all the way up. There was no flickering or anything when I pulled on it or shook it.

So, hear is the latest with it. I fooled around with it for a while yesterday and this is the latest. I went over to the fuse panel behind the dash on passenger side. I started pulling out the relay and I saw the lights starting to flicker. I then put it back in and stayed on again. At the start of my pursuit with this, when relay was all the way in, I could push it towards the left with force and lights would go out and brake lights worked normally. But when I let my finger off it went back to staying on. Pulled it out and they went out again. Pushed on the brake pedal worked normally. Pulled trolly brake and worked normally. Works normally with blinkers on. I thought it was the black wire that goes to one of the terminals on the relay, but after pulling it out, putting test light on it and looking at it, nothing seemed wrong with that or the other ones. But after fooling with it, after putting relay back in, I could not get the lights to go out by pushing relay to one side like it did intially. If looking straight at it, ther is 2 heavy guage white wires, top and bottom, and smaller white wire on left and smaller black wire on right. Tested all and grounds seemed good and hots seemed ok.

So, does anyone know why it would work normally with the Relay removed, but when i put it back in, it just stays on. I know it cant be good to run it any length of time with no relay in it. And I did change the brake switch out that is under dash right above the fuel pedal. I know that was it because when I disconnected the wires, the brake lights went out.

They say that the the only dumb question is the one that is not asked! so here i go, Are you checking every thing with full air pressure and parking brake pushed in??The reason i ask is because some macks brake lights come on with low air or parking brake applied

  17. AAAWWWW man y'all be dissin ma ride. Gonna havta call LL come put a cap in yo ass.

  18. Dear Manufacturers and purveyors to consumers, Please take note that when I order a product from you, I do not need a 2 inch thick instruction manual, or a manual that you can turn over and upside down to view different languages and dialects. I pay for your products in American money and I only require american (English language) instructions. I would also like to introduce you to a concept known as "Proofreading". Webster defines it as "To read and correct,(printers proofs). This is most preferably done after initial print, its proofread, mistakes corrected, then you can take off with your gazillion copies, and guess what, they will all be identical and grammatically correct! This proofreading concept is best done by someone schooled well in the english language, preferably an english major. The best quality proofreading does not come from someone in Botswana working at the rate of 12 cents a day, and does not even speak the english language. I really mention the possibility of all this so maybe a lighter instruction or assembly manual might possibly lower shipping costs. I have one more item to mention, while you are on the company jet on your way to your swiss "chalet", I retract that, this should be part of proofreading also, but anyway, please make sure when instructions say "insert bolt A into slot C, see Fig. 6, there definitely needs to be a Fig.6 and also aforementioned slots. Maybe while you are on company jet to Switzerland (possibly to deposit cash), why dont you just take a sample of your product, with included instructions, and try to assemble that Son of a Bitch yourself? If you look in the index of manual for 10 or 15 minutes, you might find your language. Thank you for your time, I feel much better now. Dumb Gravel Pit Hillbilly Randy
