  1. Assuming the spindle is in good condition I would suggest using replacing all of your fastening hardware with a Stemco Pro-Torq nut. They are nearly idiot proof and will get your bearing endplay to .001. I took over a large fleet maintenance program years ago and we were having bearing problems on our trailers. All of the guys were doing the TMC bearing adjustment guidelines, but were not getting the proper bearing endplay. We went to the Pro-Torq nut on all future teardowns, packed the bearings with synthetic grease and the problem was gone.

Thanks for the advice. The next time the seal blows and I take it apart, I will replace the hardware as you suggested!!

I see your user name and am currious, when were you in the Corps???

  2. maybe someone out there can shed some light on this issue!? I have a 99 CH 613, I have been blowing wheel seals on my steer axle. I even use Stemco seals with the built in wear sleeve. When I take the hub cap off and go to remove the nut to the bearing, I find that the nut is loose. I dont know if the problem is with the spindle or not. A guy told me to replace the nut and washers this may correct the problem. Can the problem be that easy or should I just look into spindle replacement/repair??

  3. I am trying to sell my 1985 R688ST. I am not very computer savy so I didn't figure out how to post a picture yet.

My truck has a Mack 350 4-valve that Trans Edge Truck center in Allentown, Pa built for that specific truck. The motor was dropped in Jan of 07. It has 49k miles on it. The motor came complete with starter, altenator and air compressor.

When they changed the motor, I had them do a clutch and imput shaft to the tranney which is a Fuller 15 speed.

The truck is on Neway air ride. I rebushed the rear-rear and replaced all the rear brakes and drums all in Jan 07 too.

I did some custom interior work as well. The truck has aluminum front wheels ans steel bud rear. The rear ends are Eaton rears. Not sure of ratio (3:90??) The Truck will run 72moh at 1900 rpm. The truck also has a 36" single cut out sleeper made by Mik-Mak in Ontario, Canada. The truck itself is also Canadian and has a double frame. This truck is a go anywhere truck. I live in CT and have gone through out the mid west and even to AZ with this truck in the past 49k miles!! This truck also has brand new virgin rubber on the back. (Kelly model KDM)

I was told that this truck originally belonged to Challenger Motor Freight in Canada. I am the 3rd owner and know the history of this truck since the mid 90's. I love this truck and wish I didn't have to sell it. The Company that I rely on to make a living in the winter months told me I must upgrade to stay with them through spring time and come back next winter. So, I bought a 99 CH 427 / 13 Sp with a mid rise sleeper. I really like the comfort and quietness of the newer truck but nothin beats the feeling of passing a "new" truck with the old "R" Straight pipe barkin

For more info or to have a picture sent via regular mail, call Ed at 203 437 0405. I appoligize I don't use the computer often. I am asking $20,000 or any reasonable offer will be considered!!!!

  4. Group,

I've hit every dead end with Mack trying to get interior upholstery and trim pieces for my RS700L, or for that matter, any R Model cab. We've struck out specifically on the door panels, headliner and back panel.

I've "come across" the Mack engineering spec design sheets for each of these items and will be having interior panels made in black vinyl. If anyone else is interested, please let me know. We might get a better price on more than one set.

I tried to get a hold of an interior kit for my R model. I was told that the "new" R models dont use a "Kit". The dealer parts guy at the dealer I use was real helpful and searched the "network" to see if any dealers still had these interior "kits" in their inventory. He found a Canadian dealer still had 1 !! The kit was blue / grey in color so I didn't buy it. Some upholstery dye or paint would probably do the trick. You can e mail me at www.motortransct@msn.com or call me at 203 437 0405. I'll gladly give you the guys name and number. Maybe he could help. He is excelent at locating odd parts.

  5. Well today they delivered my new Vision daycab. Lets see, where to start. the bumper looks like it got hooked on something backing up.Its got about a 2" gap at the fender but only a 1" at the grill, its not mounted correctly.Air leak from the leveling valve, the factory CB antenna mount has fallin down into the mirror, dash has 2 gouges is it about 1.5" long,1/4 wide, polished wheels are all dinged and scratched, the air tanks on the passenger side behind steps were painted to match frame(red) only problem, their polished!,plus there is 6 different pieces of masking tape on them, that is peeling off exposing the polished tank!I'll get pics tomoorow, but damn, this is not a good way to start w/ a new truck, even if it is a company truck, I'm one who takes pride in his ride.

Positive side is that it rides great and pulls fantastic.427 w/ Eaton auto.

Guess I'll be spending the day at the dealership.

I got my brand new vision on Nov 30 2005. Been in the shop 12 times in 5 months. The truck is putting me broke!!!!!! Mack quality...depend on it!!!

  6. Hi am not a Mack salesman or anything like that, just a owner/operator for the last 25 years,I have a hard time beliving you paid a 130,000 for a Vision,I bought one new in 2000 and gave 95,000 for it,I know prices have gone up,4 months ago I bought a 2006 Peterbilt,550 cat,18 spd for 114,500,and I am getting ready to to take delivery of a New Mack Rawhide, loaded truck, with full rear fenders,5 years 500,000 mile warrenty and gave 116,500 with FET.Mybe your mad cause you paid way to much for it.Anyway I called Savage trucking out of Slat Lake, they always ran Macks, but in 2004 they seem to have gone to IH with Cummins,This year they are back with Mack,so I called them today and taked to the head shop guy they had problems with the Cummins, but they have been running some E-7 460 2005 models, and have about 100,000 to 200,000 mile on them with very little problems.I also called John Cheesman trucking all they run is mack the top shop guy told me they had problem with the 2004 models. He told me they are running late 2005 and some 2006 model macks, with real good luck.Savage and Cheesman told me at abot 100,000 miles they seem to be breaking the turbo bolts, and Cheesman had a EGR COOLER plug up.They both told me that they are getting 5.5 to 6.35 mpg,and they keep a close eye on that.

The price of the truck (133,000.00) includes the finance charges. I drove for Cheeseman for a few months in 2003. I drove unit #364 and never had a problem with it. it had 250,000 miles on it and it was a decent running truck.

I agree with Mack Man. It's probably possible to option a Vision up to $130,000, but you can get a decent one for under $100,000. 67 mph is plenty fast- anything above 65 and the fuel mileage goes to heck and tires start throwing treads in the summer. 3.6 mpg is way low though, and combined with having to prime the fuel system suggests a fuel leak... take a look under your truck!

Stick with it and get the bugs worked out- you've just bought the best truck on the road!

Thanks for the words of encouragement!!! The truck is starting to grow on me. So far, I haven't seen any other Visions with a 270" wheelbase like mine.

  7. I bought a New Vision (cxn 613) it has a 460 aset engine. It is a JUNK!!!! I have 14,000 miles on it. It has been in the shop four times. I've only owned it for 2 months. I picked the truck up in Utica, NY and bob tailed it back home to Watertown, CT. I was all proud in my new truck, 2,100 miles on it. I didn't even make it to the Mass. line on I-90 before the problems began. The cellinoids for the engine brake went out. So i was pretty disappointed already. When I went to get the truck to bring it to the local dealer to have it fixed, I noticed a leak on the ground. Sure enough, oil from power steering pump all over the ground. (was just a fitting). A few weeks later, in a terential rain storm, wiper linkage broke, no wipers. I went back to local dealer and had that fixed. Truck wouldn't start when I went to get truck. I had to crank it over while the service manager had to hand prime it.

At this point I have had enough!!!!! I went back to the dealer that i bought from. I had a laundry list of little things wrong with it. The service manager there assured me that the truck was good to go. The next load I pulled was last week. I loaded in CT headed for AZ. Why not???? I have a $130,000 brand new truck. I should be able to run anywhere right? I took my 30,000 pound load across I-44 to I-40 and so on. I am getting an average of 3.6 MPG. Cant go more than about 67 MPH (on flat ground). It took me an extra half a day to get here. I an now it a motel while the truck is in the shop AGAIN!!! I was climbing the rolling hills at 45 MPH while trucks are blowing me over the white line. The speed limit is 75 for all vehicles. That is downright dangerous. This truck is such a junk I want Mack to take it back. The worst part is that my 98 CH is sitting at home with nothing wrong with it. This new truck is going to put me out of business!!!!!!!!!

Mack's stance is that they are fulfilling their obligation by fixing it under warranty. But when does it end? When I go broke with all the down time? or when my reputation is mud for not being able to deliver a load on time due to break downs?

Thanks for letting me vent while I'm spending Money in this motel room. See ya in a Mack shop near you!

  8. I wish the Chrome shops would buy a few parts and display them so that Drivers can dress them up on there spare time. I have been to a few chrome shops to look around and there are never any chrome parts for macks. If you are lucky, you will find those cheep bulldog mudflap weights and thats it. LOL

There is a place in Lockport, NY thet only has chrome and stainless for Mack Trucks only!!!! It is called "J P Chrome" they even have a mail order catalog :thumb:

  9. I've been a Mack driver and Mack fan for sometime now, but I recently had the displeasure of driving a 2005 Vision day cab that was leased from Ryder.  A very nice truck, pretty fast, nice ride, smooth shifting 9 spd, ice cold A/C, But what is up with the hood? It slides all over the place. I stopped a few times thinking it wasn't latched down.  It had rub marks on the cowl from sliding back and forth. When I fueled up at Ryder, I asked the attendant if this particular tractor was in an accident and the hood was replaced.  I was told all Visions do this.  Maybe Mack needs to hire better engineers, instead of Volvo's rejects.  Volvo builds a nice truck, but they will never understand the Bulldog heritage.  Dumb Swedes.
