It depends on what type of contracts you are planning on doing. Most municipalities want reliability, so they may have a maximum age for any truck they contract with, particularly if the truck is new to the contract. So I would say the first thing would be to check with your potential employer.
If you are working your own contracts doing parking lots, etc. it comes down to comfort and reliability. You know the drill; when it snows you need to be there now, not 24 hours from now. Break downs are killers for snow movers.
The other consideration is what are you going to do if it doesn't snow. When the weather gets warm is there work for a 40 plus year old truck to pay the bills?
My inclination would be to buy something newer and more reliable and use the money you make to buy the 81 as a hobby truck.
I plowed snow during the blizzard of 96 here in NJ for 4 days straight in a 1964 B813 Mack endt673 18 spd quadraplex you can’t get any more reliable the company had 1980s Autocar dk64 trucks plowing also a couple of which went down during the storm not that BullDog Mack kept going didn’t shut it down for 4 days just keep fuel in it that’s it

unfortunately "we" live in a throw away society , if the 800's were built today exactly as it was then ; eliminate all the plastic :: the cost would be $$$$$ . and they would last forever. manufactures don't want things lasting long. company I know in CT bought new triaxle last yr (not mack ). $240 K. has been back to dealer more than on the road . gone are the days of handful of tools get it going on side of road. now it's the million dollar wreckers that go out and tow it in. going to try and load some pictures of days gone by. not the best;; pictures taken back in the 80's with a camera ! truck drag races in NJ. funniest thing to watch two DM 800's race each other in the 1/4 mile. and how fast can you shift a quad!! LOL
English town diesel nationals it was the best great memories

Would be interesting to put an eye onto the rear bogie setup. There should be one of its special design. Older style than you can see (and get) off a L or B model.

Gary Mahan has a wonderful collection. But his arrogant demeanor turned me off each time we had an interaction.

Hey guys,
I have a friend that bought a 1987 Mack twin stick roll-off dumpster truck and has asked that I do the driving for him. I'm am an industrial electrician turned teacher. I have my CDL and all of my experience is in an International 9 speed. I've seen several videos on you tube, but none actually explain what's happening as they go through the shift pattern. How many actual gears are there, are you splitting each as you go up, or do you go up so many and then split them? I know there's no substitution for time behind the wheel and that's coming up, but I also know I need to understand the process. Thanks in advance for your help.
Jeff
That
LO gear in the Auxiliary box is just for 1st gear in the main box starting heavy or off road just split 1st gear done then you have 5 reverse gears

Yup, need to start skipping gears like Packer mentioned. I rarely get myself in that problem, but have a few times in the past and it gets to be a real scramble to get a gear to keep some kind of speed. It will catch you off guard as a hill will just start increasing grade without you realizing it.
In the past, with my triplex, I'll dowshift the compound to Under, as I run out of speed, I'll upshift the compound to Direct, then downshift the main. Then if that runs out too quick, you can at least drop one more in the compound quickly. That's the "fun" of two sticks LOL!! ya, right.
Just yesterday for the first time in 5 yrs I got both sticks in Neutral and couldn't for the life of me get one back in. All the trying in the world left me powerless. I finally gave up and pulled over(lucky no traffic and 4 lane road). The few times I've done this I have always got one back in and continued, but for some reason I was just off enough to not catch it. I had just about stopped for a red light when it changed, and had already pulled the compound out to downshift and I popped the main out too....oops! Rollin along with no gears at home LOL! I was only running maybe 20 mph.
Double nothing start over

It would be Great to see another B71 out at shows. I have only seen one at at the Oregon ATHS show a few years ago.
Looking at the photos it is about as original as you are going to fine and is not rusted or dented to hell. Being new to old Macks i hope you have a lot of hands on mechanical experience, aware that everything is big and heavy. and have a very large bank account to get a restoration to the finish line.
It is definitely a low production B with the Cunnings, 3 stick and has been sitting for year. It will not be going anywhere fast if the price is $25K. Before you go Mack crazy and buy it contact Dan Thomas (Mackdaddy) in Oregon he has and knows of a lot of trucks worth something in that area. His restored trucks are second to none, he may even have what you are looking for, super nice guy. I know he had a 3 stick LT with a 275 Cummins, in restoration, that he was selling awhile back.
Just a side note, It is cool to have a lot of gears but after the novelty of driving it and shifting every 10 seconds wears off you will be driving it with the Duplex ad shifting the Brownie from direct to high for the second overdrive only. There are no synchro's in any of these trans and it takes a lot of practice to fell the gears in and not blow a shift and grind. Get two sticks in natural at the same time, pull over to a Complete STOP and start over
That called DOUBLE NOTHING 😂 😂

A couple weeks ago I purchased a 1986 Mack DM 685S for 10K from Manders in Lakeville. The truck has a 13 speed tranny, and an ENDT 675 motor (235hp). I was told by Manders it had 285hp which would be the ENDT 676. After getting the truck home and power washing the motor block off I discovered it was the 235HP motor (not to happy about it) at the time I did not know to look for the aftercooler and twin pipes to the intake or that DM685 stood for the 235hp motor and DM686 stood for the 285HP motor, I DO NOW THOUGH! I was just going off what the salesman's was telling me! This DM will be replacing our current 1994 RD690s which has 300 HP. The original plan for the DM with "285hp" thought I was getting was to add a bigger fuel pump and make it have 350HP so more then the current RD and then restore the old DM. The DM at least needs 285HP as it will be pulling a 200 series hoe from jobsite to jobsite until we get a lowboy setup. So my questions are now...
1. Can the ENDT 675 handle 350Hp?
2. Where do I find a stock or aftermarket aftercooler?
3. Where do I find a twin tubed cold air intake?
4. Is this motor a 2 valve or 4 valve? which is considered better?
5. Should I sell this truck and try to find a DM686 with ENDT 676 motor?
6. is this the Ecodyne or Maxidyne motor? Which is considered better?
7. How would a ENDT 675 Pair with a 18 speed tranny? over kill is fine 😜
***Any other thoughts, ideas or concerns are welcomed and thank you for your time and knowledge!***
Other plans for the truck paint it black, covert the bud rims to Hub piloted with Alco or ATX 24" rims. put in 4.17 rears or maybe go 3.94 rears or whatever Mack excepts after 4.17. air to pintle hitch. Hush mats and a better AC system (Any ideas???) remove the pusher axle (better off-road capabilities). Remove all old lights and convert to all LED. get rid of the 20" steering wheel for 16" or 18". Someday a smooth sided box for bigger logo placement with multi functional gate. Also toying with the idea of putting an 18 speed tranny in. I want the low end for hauling equipment and offroad but at least a truck that can do 75mph/ 80mph and not be revved out the entire time.
Ultimately this is just a project truck for me, something old and cool to fix up that will be fun to drive, and will be put to work here and there as needed.
Nice looking DM you can turn up that 237 to 300 if the engine is in good shape do not go to 350 HP and replace the gear box which is probably a 6spd mud stick with a Mack 12 spd very good trans low end off road grunt and higher highway speeds good luck

There is no such thing as polyurethane bushings to replace bronze, you have that confused with the pads, just a heads up if your bronze bushings are completely worn thru,u will most likely need to replace the bar and the saddles or it won’t be 100 percent, big expensive job,are u thinking of doing this yourself,I would not advise it..
There is poly reunion bushings along with rubber and rubber encased steel trunnion bushings did the rubber encased steel bushings on my friends 88 R model tandem dump I helped him do it I thought there is only bronze there is all different material

And you never will see a new truck with a load like that neither
Can I put a charge air cooled E6-350 in a Steel Nose RD 686?
