  1. The way they represent themselves looks like they are only interested in exportation.

15 grand is a lot of scratch for some third-world buyer. Most of the export stuff I've seen is totally clapped out, rusted out million+ mile units sold "as is". And they are pretty cheap. Third world mechanics must be pretty good to coax more miles out of some of the rigs I've seen.

  2. We've tried. Oh we've tried. Rumor has it an exporter offered him 7 grand for it and he said no. We asked him and he says it belongs to the family and we'd have to go through all the family and a buncha bullshit so its not for sale. I'd love to save it. It's really rough but that doesn't matter. Prolly be there until it becomes topsoil.

    Topsoil. Priceless, Vinny!

  3. My father tells me great stories about Charlie boyajian, he hauled out of Boston sand. My father would ride in that truck, there was a long road that ran to the plant. This was late 60's.

Boyajian lived in E. Saugus, MA. That LJSWX was a beautiful rig. Ended up at Mel Clark's lot in Hampton, NH. No idea where it went after the auction (early 90's).

Gordon Vivace was another trucker out of my town. Had a sweet red Ford 10-whl dump, set-back front axle.

  4. Thanks for sharing.

I also remember seeing that B while cutting under the railroad tracks to get to the Field House.

The Durham-UNH Fire Station was next to the incinerator plant that provided steam for the campus. Hmmm......how was that for planning.

Many days I would walk by as Appleyards was dumping a trailer load of bunker oil for use in the plant. Also, every garbage truck in the seacoast area was dumping their loads to be burned up and a CAT loader was running almost non stop packing it in.

Appleyards ran some semi-rough looking R models and some gypsies would also pull their trailers.

Memories from a couple of days ago for sure.

Jim, I grew up in Saugus, MA, and remember seeing Appleyard's rigs on Rt.1 all the time. Great memories!

  5. I saw R608F10-1015 sitting in a junkyard in Gill, MA. in September, 2011. It was still lettered for Indian Ford Fire Department.

That rig is about 10 miles west of me. The guy runs a HD truck repair business, and usually has a few old Macks on the lot. I stopped and chatted with him awhile back, and he seemed friendly but businesslike, He had a late-production Mack C-50 transit bus/RV there for awhile. First conversion of a C-bus I've (40+ year Mack guy) ever seen.

  6. The Motor Bus Society reprinted a history of mack buses done by Mack in the 1970's. You could contact MBS, and of course troll ebay as well. There are several dealers who sell MBS and other bus magazines. I have dealt both as seller and buyer with "4509bus", he's one of the god guys.

I am a long-time Mack bus fan, and may be able to help with some of your questions. My copy of the MBS Mack history is packed away "someplace safe" lol.
