  1. G'day,

My mate and i are repairing a 12 speed box out of my '78 model r686 here in Australia. We are having trouble finding the HIandLO clutch gears new or second hand. One bloke we talked to said this assembley may have changed in later boxes? The numbers on the clutch gears as best we can see are PO 108 74KB4122 and the other PO 873 751KB 445.We are a bit green when it comes to Mack boxes,so any info anyone has would be much appreciated.

  2. G'day all ,and happy new year,

I'M gathering bits and pieces for an 1976 model r686 with a 320 coolpower we are restoring here in AUS. IT is missing the shutters in front of the radiator and the trim around the opening in the bonnet. AT the moment it is wearing a bit of shade cloth to do the job.

IS the verticle type shutter common to all the 70's R MODELS and fit staight on ? And what type of trim on the bonnet

    for this model?

    Thanks,

    Milo

  3. G'day milo, both were fitted, i think the 1/2 dog mirrors were an option, they were heated. New Macks had 1/2 dog mirrors as early as 1975, black or chrome bubble backas late as 1977. A lot of specially built trucks like drill rigs etc often still used black b/back. Thats what ive observed over the years. You can still buy new s/steel or chrome bubble backs from Mack for about $120 thats mirror head only. If you go to Gleemans you can sometimes p/u 1/2 dogs comlete with s/steel arms for $100-150 depending on condition. hope this info is of help to you, regards jeffro

    Thanks Jeffro,appreciate the info.

  4. Hey Milo.

good luck on the mirrors, if you dont have any luck i got one i dont need. that bloke kingofsalvage seems to have a few of the mirros on ebay so keep an eye out.

Me Iam just a tire kicker mate, with a keen eye. Poting some picks would be Mad.

    Monty,

Was winning bidder yesterday on a set of stainless steel bubble back mirrors from "kingofsalvage" $147 inc postage USD.

I also got onto a original front bumper to replace the bullbar and a mack steering wheel (to replace a non stardard one)

from a mate with a hauling business.

  5. Monty,

I have'nt bid high enough yet ,on a couple of sets that have come up on Ebay. The bloke in the U.S you gave me a link to, charges $55us for postage. So Ill try my luck again on his next listing. We have the mirror arms so we are not held up on the door repairs.Hopefully Ill have the mirrors sorted by the time we've given the cab a lick of paint.

The first job for the ol' girl is to cart some gravel for our access road.

  6. Is your mate good at steering column relocation? That truck appears to have the wheel on the wrong side of the cab!!

Just bullshitting, (as you know). That is a good looking workhorse to me.

If you get a chance please post a couple of photos of the area in the hood and cowl where the air cleaner mounts to the left side of the truck. I have one that I'm wanting to mount twin 16" Donaldsons onto, and need a visual reference to go by.

    Thanks,

    Rob

No worries Rob ,Ill try and get some photos thru the week.

  7. Joe,

We've found a fair bit of rust in the cab and doors, which i'm told is common in this model. So far we've repaired along the back of the cab,and replaced areas in the bottom of the doors and door arches.Ive put some photos in my gallery.Excuse the surface as it has to sit outside the shed thru the week.My mate can only work on it in the shed of a weekend.

I have one for sale if you dont have any luck.

Thanks for the post Monty. I saw the 2 sets of mirrors from this sellar the other day. I emailed for a price on postage, and he said 'ship to usa only'. Ive since ordered a new set of r600 mirror ARMS from Gleeman truck parts in Brisbane for $332. We are cutting the rust out of the doors and need them to relocate the orginal holes and fill the ones in from the non standard mirrors. I'm guessing that either type of mirror will fit these arms?

  10. G'DAY, I'M A NEW AUSTRALIAN MEMBER TO BMT AND ON THE LOOKOUT FOR A SET OF MIRRORS AND ARMS FOR A RECENTLY PURCHSED 1976 R686 (WHICH NEEDS A BIT OF T L C) . DOES ANYONE KNOW WHICH TYPE OF MIRRORS WERE FITTED TO THIS MODLE,THE BUBBLE BACK TYPE OR THE STRAIGHT ONES WITH THE BULLDOG?ANY INFO WILL BE GREATLY APPRECIATED ,AS MY KNOWLEDGE ON MACKS IS LIMITED AND HOPE TO LEARN AS I GO.
