  1. Here is a question that is real and not hypothetical:

Let's say you have a tractor with low batteries and no jumper cables handy. There is also not enough air in the receivers to release the spring brakes so the truck could be push started. There is also no air fittings on the tanks to connect a shop air line to. I've been told you can charge the air through the glad hands but I've tried and could not get the truck to charge. I tried hooking lines service to service, emergency to service, floored the brake pedal with each event of the dead truck, then even tried holding the protection valve in to no avail.

Am I missing something? Once I swapped batteries, and the truck started right up, it readily made air quickly.

Rob, with some of the older trucks you could hook both the emergency lines together and usually it takes 2 people to do it cause BOTH valves have to be held in at the same time, with the newer trucks, mostly after 1975 its not possible to do that cause they have some thing in the line that keeps air from going back into the air tanks. I carry fittings so if I ever need to have that done I just pull a plug on an air tank and I have an air hose I connect to the emergency line to air up tires, then I can either use my hose to air up my truck or some one else's. If I let some one use my air tank fitting after we get it started I have them pump down the air so I can remove my fitting, replace the plug and they are ready to go, well after they get their air back up again. IF YOU TRY that, be sure they have very little, to no air before you remove the air fitting, you don't want to get hurt trying to take it out. Oh, yeah, I always put a valve stem in an air tank on any truck I drive just in case I need to air it up and go.

    Good Luck,

  2. I seen where a U tractor was used for local dilivery with box trailers and the driver said it made it a lot faster to back in to docks because he could see the end of the trailer. Which that would go along with the better visibility Mack claimed. I remember seeing Transcon using U models for over the road use as well. That was around 1979, or 1980. One thing for sure, Mack would try different cab styles, and they seemed to work.

    Have a good day,

  3. I have wrote to my senators, and my congressman, and my congressman is the only one that even cares about what is going on. He is a Republican, my senators are demacrats. Anyway I have writen over 8 letters each since May and one senator, Lincoln her staff refuses to answer my letters, so how can we change things when our "representives" refuse to represent us???

I don't vote for either of the dems, but they keep getting voted back in anyway. I'm so fed up with all the non-sence, but I think the people are going to fugure it out after its too late and we as a nation are going down the drain. I hope I am wrong about that though.

  4. I personally haven't been on this site long myself, but I think Rob has helpped as many people as he can. He does have a unique sense of humor. Like Rob said, maybe it was just a misunderstanding. I do enjoy reading what Rob has to say, and his humor. I also feel that he made a few good points in his orginal statement.

    Good Luck to all,

    Bert

  5. Hi all, I have been hinking about this for a while myself, I don't think it would take much to do this.

1st. I think you would need a foot valve for a tractor type truck, (so you would have an air line going to the trailer service) as well as a line going to the hand valve for the trailer brakes (service). As for part numbers, I'm lost. Just trying to think what it would take to turn a straight truck into a tractor/trailer.

I think for just the emergency, you could go from an air tank to the control valve on the dash, but for the service, it would need to have a pedal valve to go to the service line as well, unless there is a plugged port for the trailer service line.

Maybe you could have a dealer check the part numbers to see if they are the same , or different. (for a truck verse tractor)Pedel valve

    I hope this helps some.

  6. I remember when I was a kid my dad heated with coal, I thought it was great, for about $10 you could get 5 tons of coal delivered. When I was just a teenager he changed over to natural gas, that was actually a shock, because it seemed as though the coal kept our house warmer.

My guess now is that Obama, Pelosie, and Gore will see to it that all coal use is stopped. I'm just curious as to where the rest of our electricity is suppose to come from. I have heard that coal provides about 49% of all electricity for our country. I think it would be interesting if the White House is running off a coal fired ele. plant. If the pres can do without ele. then I guess I could too, or maybe we will be allowed to have ele. for a few hours a day.

3rd world countries, here we come!!!

  7. Hey Rob, I drove a '74 Frtl. and it had a tag in the cab that said which suspension the truck was equiped with. The problem is, it could have been removed some time ago. (a sticker type tag) You may be able to count the leafes and some one could tell you what you have. My best guess would be a 34,000 lbs. In '73 there were still a few states that only had a 73,273 weight limit.

That is a pretty good looking "R" model. Good luck.

  8. Locomotivebreath, I just did the math and I guessed at your tire RPM, that is tire revolutions per mile (I used 504, that's common for a low pro 22.5 tire) and I came up with 65mph @1909 RPM (engine) If you use a bigger tire, like a 24.5 your engine speed at 65 would be less, likewise a smaller tire would make your engine RPM be higher.

    I hope this helps,

    Good Luck

  9. I don't like either one myself, but I am going to vote for McCain, I have to say though, I think if he wins the best thing he could do for our country is 30 days after he is sworn in, RESIGN, and let Mrs. Palin take over. I like her spunk, and the way she stands up for herself, and her ideas.

    Have a good day,

  10. I can't imagine why any company with plants in the U.S. and Canada would want to relocate to Mexico. I remember

Singer sewing machine co. did that and 6 months later they moved back to Connicut. They said they couldn't get the quality they needed from the workers in Mexico. Maybe Mercedes knows something the rest of us don't.

    Good Day

  11. :D Welcome friend!

I am new here myself, and there are a lot of people here to try to help anyone. I have been driving for just over 30 years and I'm still learning.

Perhaps you will be able to help others as well.

    Have a great day,

  12. Its a shame to see such a loved truck to go by the way side. I guess since we can't get a new one with a :mack1: engine

(a real Mack engine anyway) Its just as well. Its hard to believe that such a great name in trucks is going by the way side.

It would have been nice if they (volvo) would at least try to keep the Mack trans, and rears. If this is progress, I must be a dinosuar.

    Good Day

  13. Lmackattack has a very good point when working on/around batteries, be careful. if they are being overcharged they will have a very explosive vapor coming from them. From what you said, that at the battery its self it was showing 14 volts, that's not bad, with a lot of newer cars, they are suppose to have anywhere from 14-15 volts. Some of it depends on the state of the battery if its low it will draw all the alt. will put out, if they are fully charged they should only draw enough to keep them that way.

One more thing that "could" cause the problem you are having, a battery could have a short and that can cause just what you are experiencing. The best way to check for that is to disconnect all the batt's and test each one by its self.

Wish I could be of more help sir.

    Good Luck

  14. If they were over charging they would smell like they were spuing battery acid all over the place, a very bad smell. I have seen that more times then I care to think about, also if they were being over charged they would be needing water to be added every day as well. I can tell you as far as the people who sold you the batteries go, they will usually come up with anything to void the warranty. (good luck there) Now if you were to buy 100 batteries a year from them then maybe they would be willing to not only warranty them, but chek to see why they are losing water/acid.

I am a little tired of people that sell you something and say, it comes with a warranty too, then if you have a problem, they say anything to void the warranty. I've had more than my fair share of that non-sence.

    Good Luck

  15. I have had experience with both the Jake and exhaust brake, I think they are pretty close as far as slowing the truck, but the Jake does do a little better job than the exhaust brake. I do think the jake is better because of less wear and tear on the engine. What a Jake does is open the exhaust valve at the time the piston is coming up on the compression stroke allowing the compression to go out the exhaust thus giving the added noise in the exhaust.

The exhaust brake will do somewhat the same thing, with a little less noise, and less retarding effect. And less cost.

If I could get a jake that's what I would prefer, but the choice is yours.

    Good Luck

  16. Bob, I just reread your original post and seen that you are going to use a 6 speed, I would think with the 5:02's it wouldn't be a problem on take off, but

if the Volvo is slow, then I'm guessing the Mack would be as well. I think the 6 speed would have a low enough lo gear to get it started pretty fast, but with 70,000 pounds it could be kind of slow.

I wish I could be of more help sir.

Good Luck and keep us posted as to how everything works out.
