Hi gents,

So the cream coloured truck in the first post is the primary truck from the film, the 1977 RS712LST Vin number 35492. 

Presides this primary truck 3 other RS700L's where used. I believe the restored truck was the second highway double vin 6646. It wound up being converted to a cement mixer and wracked in 1986 and bought and rebuilt in 2007.  I also believe when they found the surviving trailer they also found another wrecked truck along with many of the wrecked cars from the film.

Back axles if you can see the hubs should also give some hints as to how big the truck is , I cant see no turbo so if it 34 ass end it may have been a Power Pup, Mack turbos on these motors sort of sat forward of the oil filter if its non turbo I think it would be only around 150 hp maybe 160 at the most

Hi Paul I will see if I have any rear axle shots in my collection, would the turbo be on the right side or left? I presumed it would be on the right?

Hey rob, Thankyou for your reply. Unfortunately I have never read the artical in trucking life so can only go from what Dennis tells me on the phone, he can't remember exact power plants but said they where apparently both turbo 6's. I'm waiting to hear back from Ralph Clark and the original owner from country NSW's. Transmission in the hero truck was a quadruplex defiantly and Denise said the double was a single stick 10 speed with the spliter on top. They actually drove up 3 trucks from Sydney, Dennis drove two and Ralph drove the other. The first two trucks where on loan from Mack trucks, they where suppose to be used for transporting gear around and bring many of the vehicles up from Sydney. The borrowed trucks where the green r model (that would be later the double truck) and a green flintstone. Dennis and Ralph drove these up from Sydney together and then They flew back to Sydney to bring up the finished hero truck and tanker. On returning it was discovered the art department had gone to town on the borrowed mack. Even after Ralph and Dennis's grave concern over its new identity and the fact that it was borrowed the production department didn't really care. Apparently Ralph had a very interesting time when it was returned to Mack trucks lol.

Hi guys new to forum, not being any thing of a mack expert I was wondering if anyone can identify the engine in this Australian built R600, 

From my research so far I believe it's built approximately 1970-1971. Please feel free to correct me on anything but I put it in this build time because 

-early grease hubs

-narrow cab

-early roof clearance lights

-Flintstone dash

-small grab handles

-square tanks

obviously not all these are easy visible but I have many photos of this particular truck.

Those with a keen eye will notice it's the truck from MM2 and yes twin cleaners and it isn't a cool power.

From looking at it I personally believe it to be a END673 or ENDT673 but why it has twin air cleaners is beyond me. I know a guys who worked at the Kenworth dealership where this truck was purchased from by George Miller and MM2 production crew as when traded although red in colour (you can see traces of its original colour in the photo) it also had the twin cleaners. 

Many info you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated. This photo was a behind the scenes phot on location. They used two trucks in filming but predominantly this one and I know the second truck (originally green in colour) didn't have twin cleaners or exhausts and was mocked up that was by the arts department. This is a rare photo of both trucks together with the hero truck on the rights and double on the left.

Those with a keen eye will also notice the double has front mud flaps the hero dose not (not that you can see where they would be with the guy standing in the way).

You can also see the road rash on the bullbar of the hero truck near the arm of the guy in the green jacket this was from when it t-boned the bat car (red falcon)

Very rare photo of the two trucks together, taken by a broken hill local. The truck on the left is the double. I can tell this by the slightly different front hub. Both trucks have the early greased hubs however on the hero truck also has slightly protruding dust caps/shields. All stationary scenes in the movie where filmed using the hero truck.

Out of all the replicas on the scene in Australia no one has done one correctly, that being with an early narrow cab and flintstone dash unfortunately. 

Hey mate sorry to burst any bubbles but that was one of the three replicas that is around. You would have noticed it was a wide cab with wrap around dash. I know the truck you are talking about! The original mad max ones were narrow cabs with flintstone dashes.

As you can guess Dennis couldn't remember the engines 36 years later all he could remember was they where both turbo 6's. To cut a long story short in the last 6 months I secured an rare behind the scenes, under bonnet photo of the hero truck taken from the left hand side. I will post it when I work out how too. I'm no mack expert but Its defiantly not a cool power. I think possibly a ENDT673 however still can't work out why it has twin cleaners. For many years I believe it was a coolpower also but from my research I date the trucks 1970-1971 which puts them before coolpower come to Aus approx 1974. I have just sent an email to the family business who originally owned the hero truck and hoping to hear from them soon.
