i will look for numbers on the tranny and another gear position on the main stick.

OK now I'm confused.
4 main gears in the first box
if only 1st gets split as some say, that be a 5 speed .
can any body explain where the come up with 6 or 7 speeds
not doubting,just need clarification.

I purchased a r model Mack last year with a twin stick, its an ex plow/sander truck ,now just a cab and chassis (Hell my wife is still mad ). I drove it home and it runs great and shifts fine, steering's a little loose.
seems to be 4 speed with high low reverse
the shift pattern is
1st stick
gear-gear-gear
xxx-gear-xxx
2nd stick
high
low reverse
it pretty cool shifting gears in reverse.
I tried to read other post but they weren't much help.
what is it called 4 speed, 5 speed, 12 speed

I'm gonna check core value at local engine core buyer, not even sure where to start .
As you mentioned times are tuff , but deals will be made to pay the bills
