Another rookie question, my truck has the air operated radiator shutters. There's a valve to keep them open or closed. Now, when closed... Are they controlled by the thermostat to open, or are they simply closed

Another question... the air valve on the top center dash, that says slippery road/dry road... is that for the front brakes?

Thank you Superdog. Im definately proud to have it. It is really sound mechanicaly. ive got it in the shop, and going through it as time allows. i put all new cab lights on it, fixed the pigrail, and just finding all the little things that need attention. The engine has a small leak after its parked and shut off. it only drips a few drops though. I can live with that. Theres a few spots on the top of the cab, by the lip that is bubbled, but that wont be bad. Im having alot of fun tinkering with it. It will make life easier this spring, hauling hay, and all that. What does the switch on the far left side on top of dash do? its a two way toggle.

its definitely short... rides like a sled. not much better with a lowboy behind it. im proud of it though. im fairly young, but i still like things that are mechanical, and you can work on them without plugging them in to something. hah

All, thank you for your patience and awesome advice and guidance. Been a wild last few weeks. We have had two big snows and in between them my wife's grandfather passed. Been helping the fam out as much as possible. I'm a full time national guardsman, so we got called out for snow removal. I'm an engineer, so that meant lots of time in a grader seat, and not much time at the hacienda.

I have pics on my iPhone, but have no idea how to load them on here from it... I guess I need to get them on the computer so I can try that way.

Again, thank y'all for all I'm learning from you gurus. I'm new to the Mack world, but loving it so far. Looking foreward to learning a lot more from y'all! Thanks in advance...

Any ideas on where I can get any dash parts, looking for some dash panels.. It's tan interior. Just wanting to make it look nice. This is something I'm really enjoying working on, just making time after work can be a pain... Took headliner out today, previous owner put some extra insulation up there. And some mice got in it. Needless to say, I spent rest of time with a shop vac and some bleach... What is something to put up there that'll work well ? Any thoughts or suggestions are helpful!

So I replaced all the top clearance lights with the LED bullet lights. Took the headliner out to fix a short, and low and behold, a mouse had been in it. That was nice.... So any suggestions on insulation for the headliner

Yes sir,... That definitely makes me feel better... most retrofits were completed around late 90s. Watch for the army's 130g graders and 621b scrapers coming for sale more and more. They are upgrading the earthmoving fleet ( finally) I turned in 5 d7g and 2 f models, 5 621b scrapers, 5 130g graders, and 3 case w24c loaders. All wonderful machines, in great shape. I'd love to buy one of our old machines that I knew the history on and put a lot of seat time on.. ... But last winter and early spring, the trucks started showing up with new d7r's 120m awd graders, 621g scrapers, and 966h loaders. I'm glad someone in the gov woke up and upgraded our 40 year old fleet

Gear head, and Farmer, I certainly don't want to sound like a know it all. I re read my post and realized I sort of sounded like an ass. Hopefully no offense taken, as none was meant. I've spent almost half my life chasing this old green iron, sometimes it's the army coming out in me haha

All are very low hour, and like said earlier, overly maintained. I've been an army engineer for 14 years now, here in ky, we just upgraded to the d7R series 2. I cut my teeth on the E and F models. Wonderful machines. But I'm really glad they upgraded haha

That's a d7F. All of them went through the " SLEP" program, or service life extension plan. (Cat rebuild). The F models and G models look a lot alike. You can tell them apart by the humped hood, more square looking rops, and the riser on top center of blade- all on the F model. The G models have a more slanted rear on the rops, blade tilt cyl is on right side - if looking from rear of machine. Most of the engines in the f models were upgraded to the 3306.

Thank you superdog, I feel that old engine is solid. I just like to think ahead... I certainly appreciate all y'all helping me with my truck. I've never seen so much helpful knowledge on one site. I can prob get my hands on a silver 92 just to have hangin around in case of emergencies.

I know I probobally overwhelm you all with questions, but my head is full of them... I like soaking all this in, it's how I learn. Now.. It has the two stick 6 speed, I don't have an issue with it, but for my uses, is there a better choice? Hills, mining pits, mud ect?

Super dog - thanks for the quick response! I am in west Kentucky coal country. 3408's are pretty plentiful around here. Both mining and Haulin applications. Our local cat dealers are top notch to work with, and I have several contacts with older experienced mechanics with cat. I can get my hands on different engines, and have several, one being an 855 cummins. I always liked the sound of a 3408 working, and have ran several in drills and loaders. I just want yalls expert opinion on a good back up engine for the truck. It'll be used for farm hauling hay, and equipment. I have a 225 excavator. My friends have told me they want me to help haul their machines up to 50 tons

My five year old wanted to take the Mack for a ride yesterday. It was a nice day out so we made a few laps... I have been thinking, I know that parts are gettin scarce for these engines. Now mine runs great, but I'm thinking down the road... Would a 3408 fit under the hood? Ive got no intentions of ever changing this engine until the 865 lays down, but still , would it work? I've always loved v8 engines. Y'all are experts,
