NYC Sanitation Mack R611 S w/ Loadmaster LM125 Collection Truck

Recommended Posts

Widely regarded as the best trucks DSNY ever had, these beasts were used in the late 70's and 80s. They never got stuck in the landfills or in the snow and they were BIG, 25 yarders to be exact with loads of power. They were very custom with drivers side exhaust stacks, heavy plow frames, 237 engine and Allison 5 speed with electric PTO shift. The first picture was taken by Frank Leparik in Brooklyn, NY in 1980, this is quite possibly the best picture of these trucks. The last picture is from Mack Bulldog Magazine either late 1980 or early 1981 issue, I would love to find and purchase a copy of that magazine if anybody on here knows the issue.

Just curious where the fuel tanks are. I see one large tank under the trash body in the first picture but this could be hydraulic oil for the body?

A 237 in an R611 is odd.  R611 would normally be a Thermodyne.  R685 would normally be a 237 Maxidyne.  They didn't leave many clues on the hood to decipher, though!

That's a real garbage truck!  25 yards is a bunch of trash!

Yea I bet they were perpetually "overloaded" for a tandem. I see from the last picture they had tube type rubber which makes me wonder when tubeless tires became common?

The fuel tank is the tank under the body, the hydraulic oil tank is the piece of the body that sticks out over the cab. It's a little different but from my understanding Loadmaster still offers the body mounted oil tank on their current products.

I am not sure when they introduced tubeless tires, to this day some trucks in the fleet still have tubes. I have a scan of a DSNY tire chart somewhere, I could post it on here if you are interested

Likely  24" spokes, With those you'd never overload the tires. Be Muni owned, I doubt weight was much of an issue.

It used to be in the days gone by, NY-NJ went by the tire size on what weight you could haul, 24" tube type were real common. They are still in other parts of the world, but in North America they are almost gone from the scene. No tubeless equivalent for a 24" tube type like there is for 22" and 20"

This is what makes up the current fleet, majority Mack LR's with some Crane Carrier's making a come back in recent years. Everything is cab over/low entry in the current fleet with the exception of the Mack Granite dump trucks they have.
