tom1361 Posted December 16, 2017 Share Posted December 16, 2017 hello everyone, went to put my spokes and drums on today and they won't go on. they hang up on the new linings. brake cans and slack adjusters aren't on yet. s cams are sitting nice and flat as well as the wear pads on the shoes. my first question is why would the rebuilder put one layer of roofing paper [tar paper] under the shoe? now if i take the linings off and remove that paper the drums will slide on nicely. second question is when and if i remove the linings is there a proper way to put them back on, ie:: tightening sequence and torque specs?? i would be thankful for any help..... tom vb. Popular Post BC Mack Posted December 16, 2017 Popular Post Share Posted December 16, 2017 take them back to your brake supplier with the drum mounted on the hub and have them machine the shoe to match the drum profile, but give 0.010" clearance to wiggle the drum on... shoes with rollers can have up to four sizes of roller, max oversize of drum is cast in the drum info, and shoes can come as std, X or XX.... most common size I use in 14.5 and drums can wear up to 14.833 before scrap. unless you are putting on new drums with new shoes and linings (which is now recommended given the crap drums out of China) you need to have machining done to give 100% contact from day one, otherwise you will only have a small contact area until the linings wear down some. The brake bolts should come apart and be able to be reused, the 7" shoes used on your truck have 3/8" bolts in them. Just tighten them up from the center out and use some common sense.
