When Kenworth launched the T680 in 2012, the company said it was the most aerodynamic truck it had ever built. A few things have changed since then, and the T680 has evolved, and it's not even more aerodynamically efficient. Jim Park takes a walk around tour of the truck, examining the T680's latest aero enhancements.

Paccar Automated Transmission Now Standard on Kenworth T680

Heavy Duty Trucking (HDT)  /  December 19, 2017

Kenworth has announced that the 12-speed Paccar Automated Transmission and right-hand column-mounted shifter will be standard equipment on linehaul and regional haul applications of Kenworth’s on-highway flagship T680.

The action completes the Kenworth T680’s transition to the Paccar proprietary standard powertrain of engine, transmission, and tandem rear axle to maximize efficiency and driveability.

“The seamless integration of the proprietary Paccar Transmission with the Paccar MX-13 engine and Paccar tandem rear axles in the Kenworth T680 provides new levels of fuel economy and weight savings performance, and a powertrain second to none providing benefits to both fleets and individual truck operators,” said Kurt Swihart, Kenworth marketing director. “In 2017, approximately 70% of our linehaul customers purchased automated transmissions, up from about 30% in 2013. We’ve received a very positive response from fleets involved in the Paccar transmission’s testing and validation program.”

Kenworth’s new column-mounted shifter for the Paccar Transmission places gear selection and engine brake controls at the driver’s fingertips for better ergonomics, comfort and overall performance. With the shifter right there on the steering column, the driver does not have to reach for it. This placement also frees up dash space by eliminating engine brake control switches.

The Paccar Transmission is said to be ideal for linehaul and regional haul applications up to 110,000 pounds gross vehicle weight. The Paccar MX-13 engine is available with ratings up to 510 horsepower and 1,850 lb.-ft. of torque. The transmission is up to 105 pounds lighter than comparable transmissions, according to Paccar, allowing for greater payloads.

The new Paccar Transmission provides a 750,000-mile oil change interval. Other features include a maintenance-free clutch, and an internally routed electrical system that minimizes exposure to the elements. The fluid pressure detection system protects the gears from low fluid conditions.

Kenworth T680 Available with MX-11 and Paccar Automated Transmission

Heavy Duty Trucking (HDT)  /  March 14, 2018

Kenworth has made the T680 available for order with a combination of the Paccar MX-11 engine and the new Paccar Automated Transmission, designed for linehaul and regional haul applications up to 110,000 pounds GVWR.

The MX-11 engine offers up to 430 horsepower and 1,650 lbs.-ft. of torque and is lighter that a comparable 13 liter engine, according to Paccar. The Paccar Automated Transmission is also lighter than comparable transmissions by as much as 105 pounds, to allow for greater payloads and has good low-speed maneuverability.

“The proprietary Paccar Powertrain, which includes Paccar’s 10.8-liter MX-11 engine, 12-speed transmission and 40,000-pound tandem rear axle, provides outstanding performance through weight savings, increased fuel efficiency and enhanced driveability for Kenworth T680s operating in linehaul and regional haul applications,” said Kurt Swihart, Kenworth marketing director.

The Paccar transmission features extended maintenance with a 750,000-mile oil change interval. The clutch is designed to be maintenance free and features an internally routed electrical system that minimizes exposure to the elements. It also features a fluid pressure detection system that protects the gears from low fluid conditions.

The Paccar transmission is paired with Kenworth’s new column-mounted shifter that places gear selection and engine brake controls at the driver’s fingertips for better ergonomics and improved performance. The shifter position on the steering wheel column also frees up dash space by eliminating engine brake control switches.

The 12-speed Paccar Automated Transmission is also available with the Paccar MX-13 engine rated up to 510 horsepower and 1,850 lbs.-ft. of torque and Paccar tandem rear axles to maximize Paccar powertrain efficiency and driveability.

Kenworth to Offer Paccar Fuel Economy Package on T680 Models

Heavy Duty Trucking (HDT)  /  October 26, 2018

Kenworth has announced the that the Paccar Powertrain Fuel Economy Package will be available as a spec on T680 model trucks beginning next year. According to Kenworth, the new package combines the fully integrated Paccar Powertrain, including the Paccar MX-13 engine with a new 405-hp at 1,650 lb-ft of torque rating, Paccar 12-speed automated transmission, PACCAR 40K tandem rear axle, and enhanced Kenworth predictive cruise control technology.

According to Kenworth, this package includes a new version of the MX-13 engine, featuring a new torque curve that further refines the engine’s fuel economy performance in line-haul and regional haul applications by lowering the engine’s horsepower rating while maintaining its torque.

“This combination maximizes fuel economy and offers excellent performance for our customers,” said Kurt Swihart, Kenworth marketing director. “One of the bigger contributors is the deeply integrated predictive cruise control function, which varies the vehicle’s speed over rolling hills without reducing the average vehicle speed. The transmission software is also optimized for the PACCAR MX-13, allowing for lower engine RPMs at cruising speeds. At Kenworth, we’re continually researching ways to enhance spec’ing to find the best fuel economy combination available. The new 405-horsepower rating is just one example.”

The PACCAR Powertrain Fuel Economy package will be available in the first quarter of 2019.
