Air conditioner retrofit

Recommended Posts

Just a thought ,on the old b models and similar antique trucks, southern air and vintage air make a turnkey r134 air conditioner setup for street rods and antique cars.sells for about 800 bucks could probably be adapted to an old mack .street rodder mag. Has ads also may be sold by summit racing equip. You could put the condenser under the bumper like where they put lights, maybe drill some big holes in the bumper.

Been there.  I got my from Retroair.com.   It was only $650?  They don't offer the same kit anymore and looks like prices are higher now.  Fit great, works great.  It will freeze you out of the cab.  I'm trying to find the link to my install a couple years ago.

Here are a couple pictures.

Thanks Jim, I play hell sometimes trying to find my old posts.  I gave up on it.  Strange I thought it was longer then basically a year ago?

BillyT, I held off for a few years til I found a unit that was cost effective.  Most of the Vintage air stuff is pretty pricey once you get everything you need.  I had contemplated putting a heat/air unit, but my heater is all rebuilt and didn't really want to get rid of it if I didn't have to.   Again, pricing all played a part.  When someone online somewhere posted a link to this place in Texas I jumped on it.  Super people to deal with, though like I said the kit I bought is not longer listed.

How did you mount the compressor and what did you use, pictures would be helpful?

I have a  1960 B95 Mack with a 707C gasoline engine and want to install an A/C unit in it.  My major problem is mounting a compressor.  Can anyone send me info and possibly photos of the mounting hardware and compressor for this application? Any help.would be greatly appreciated.

I closed my PB acct so lost all my linkable pics.  Here are a few.  I duplicated what they do with an R model basically.  The condenser is under the bunk since there is no place out front to mount it.

we fitted a vintage air unit, gen 1V, evaporator fits snug under the dash behind the glove box but you have reduce the depth of the glove box and we connected to the windscreen sock so we have cooling, heating and demisting same as in a modern car, heats and cools really great, you can make a suitable panel say 3 inches attached to bottom center of dash to hold the 2 air vents or more and also 1 on each side, so you have 4 vents and the 2 demisters outlets, fed from the evaporator unit outlets, our condenser is behind the front bumper, important to get a correct size condenser, the technical support team at vintage air are really helpful to give good information, such as the condenser size and even the appropriate evaporator

I am familiar with the black bracket the compressor is attached to.  What is the stainless steel bracket below it and how is it attached to the engine block? I could not tell in the picture which pully or pullies are driving the compressor.  Thank you for the photos Sir.

The lower bracket is homemade, using the original fuel filter mount portion.  I then ran two legs down to the accy drive to support it.  Rock solid.  This mimics what they do with an R model that has a/c.  I only run one belt, on the front pulley, as it won't clear the protrusion of the accy drive down below.  The belt just touches it as it wiggles around while running.  Never a problem, works well.  I had to clip the fan shroud a bit to clear the pulley on the compressor.
