My plan is to get it on the road and expand business for this summer. Amazingly the interior is in really good shape with a few wear marks but no holes or tears. The overhead console is intact with only a small crack near a screw hole. The truck also has two air ride seats in really good shape, show some wear but no rips or tears. The cab is rust free even the gutter and still has original paint and seam seal in good shape. There is some pin striping done with a signature and date of 85, so I figure original paint. The hood is cracked on one side and the bumper was tweaked but I took it off and straightened it in the press and mounted it back on and pulled the twist out. The truck was originally set up for heavy haul with sleeper. Not sure but from the stickers and decals I think I maybe the third or fourth owner. The guy I bought it from said it was recently converted to a dump before he got it and shortly there after he had to replace the clutch and some transmission seals. So far I have been going over the truck trying to figure out what is in needs of replacement, what needs future replacement and what is okay. The owner I bought it from had it tagged and on the road for personal use with the last DOT done in October 2009. The paperwork he gave me shows he has put on about 6500 miles since the clutch job. I adjusted the clutch brake but don't think it has enough free play so when I can recruit a helper will look at that again. I am going to replace the air bags got them today. In the process of stripping everything down found the clevis was seized on the yolk and would not come free so instead of jacking around I pulled everything and will replace it. Since I am going to run the truck I figured why give the DOT something to find. So the front axle gets brake drums, shoes, chambers and slack adjusters and air lines and oil caps. Yes they are Any idea what that round thing on the rocker arm with the wire is? I looked up parts on the PAI site and I am going to see about finding everything to make it work. Quoted $14.81 at Mack per foot ((Hood Welting for the Cowl)). I paid $11.86 last spring when I bought some for the 1978 RWL from Mack. Top speed is around I would guess 87 MPH it cruises easy at 72ish at 1600 rpms in overdrive. Empty she is a little heavier than I wanted (23700 with one full tank of fuel) but it does have a good lined box with some 7/16" heavy plate and having a 4 speed spicer (aux) adds a few extra poundage. She seems to be easy on fuel and I try don't load more than my plates 54K. 15 tons is right around 53K depending on fuel level. Most everything I haul is lighter than that because they want 20 or 24 tons so I usually run about 10 to 13 tons. Hoping to get her in some new paint in October, probably stick with the blue but have some different colored fenders to give a east coast vibe. I redid the window channel and latches. I got the strikers and assorted parts via PAI and they were dead on fits at more than 50% less than Mack wanted. I went to my favorite old trucks guys (Jim Carter Chevy) for the window channel and whiskers. Been stopped by the DOT, and the truck got a clean bill of health. I finally got all the fluids replaced and did not find any surprises, I did put in some new magnet plugs but the old ones were fine just the square ends were rounded off. She was making a clicking sound going from high into low and the PTO had a whine, when I drained the transmission I rebuilt the PTO and cleaned the back box valve that seemed to fix everything. Still a truck with a gazillion miles but I think for what I am doing she will do fine. I get lots of looks and smiles from the other drivers not sure if they are impressed or think I am stupid. but she has more than paid for herself and I enjoy driving her. 10 Quote Robert"I reject your reality and substitute my own." The elbow grease,paint,and repairs you have done really show. Better than one of those "sensor-laden" new trucks out there,for sure. Good luck! She's a keeper!
