Split rim question

Recommended Posts

Call your truck tire stores. They might know someone. Or maybe a mobile tire guy, they likely do split rims or know someone that does.

Don't bother with car tires stores as they won't have a clue.

Some mobile farm tire guys will still handle them. Most everyone else does not want to work on them.

Yup, most places won't go anywhere near them these days.

If you live near an intermodal terminal, the local tire shops can do it. Most container chassis still use tube type split rims.

Suffolk County, Nassau County and NYC DOT will all issue an out of service for non 3 piece rims, I would assume that is country wide.

The Firestone type RH-5 pictured above are the real dangerous ones. I've heard they are illegal to run on the road but I have no proof to back it up.

If it's just a standard split ring rim, the are safe enough to change yourself if you follow some precautions. Run several raps of heavy chain around the tire and rim and use a clamp on chuck and air up from a safe distance.

I torch all the rh-5 I come across, these are the real "widow-makers". The three-piece rims are safe just make sure the locking ring is well seated and don't stand in front when airing them up.

There's a goodyear place in Bristol that broke down a rim for me and re-assembled/inflated when the LRI on the FWD sucked the valve stem last summer.
