slpwlker Posted April 7, 2014 Share Posted April 7, 2014 Definitely need to fine tune that lift axle. You should have no problem getting 18 to 20 on that steer. That is the worst feeling sliding the steers hoping you can catch and make the turn. I never ditched it, but soiled myself more than once with a 345b on.I can get 20 on the steer but that rigid is gone and now have a steerable. Getting ready to move everything outside and maybe plumb an electic dump or something. Already had the death wobble. I think I would see that thing going over and pretty much have a stroke right there, nuff amfo on that truck to make it and the road under it disappear. Of course its not mixed yet but the ingredients are there. My dealership had about 10 cars going to the Atlantic City Classic Car Auction. We had a 94 Dodge cab and chassis with a pair of 40 gallon tanks on either side, stainless rear wheel fenders and a gooseneck ball in the middle of the frame. Looks like a mini semi tractor. We used this to pull a 48' Take 3 wedge car trailer. I've moved this thing around the back lot all the time but never drove anything that big on the road before. My boss asked if I thought I could drive that to AC to bring a load of cars down. I said sure, I towed trailers before and did towing for 5 years. I had confidence. The three cars were a 1969 Z/28 Camaro, 1969 Yenko Camaro clone, and a 1934 Ford Street Rod. Roughly $100,000 in cars. I leave following our other guy who was pulling the enclosed 20' trailer. I get down the road no problem. No issues going around corners, I got this... So I thought. We get into AC via the Expressway and had to make a left to go around the block to get to the convention center. The guy who I was following is in the far left lane. I follow then realized I need to get over one because I won't make the corner. All the damn buses wouldn't let me in. I decided I would just shoot straight and cut wide. I cut off a bus who was desperately trying to get around me instead of waiting the 10 extra seconds and start the left turn. I keep watching the mirrors, bus, cars curb and hydrant. Everything looked clear. Just when I said I did it I check the left mirror and the front tire of the trailer cuts onto the curb and RIPS the hydrant from its location, blowing the tire, tearing off the front spring pack and the hydrant is wedged under the axle. Luckily the hydrant had no water coming out or that would have been an awesome geyser. I pulled ahead a block to get out of the way of traffic and wait for the police. First time on the road with that trailer and what a way to learn. I didn't get any tickets, the cops were really cool and wanted to check out our cars more than the situation. My company had to pay for a new hydrant and I had to fix the trailer. So, I thought I was a truck driver that day. Then in the early 90's I got my own plow contract.Everyone told me I had to be careful, because it was hard to drive a plow with a wing on it. I was going to show them I was the best !So only 20 minutes into my first storm with my first plow, I was 3 inches closer to a bridge than I should have been, going WAY too fast.I bent both wing arms (very hard to do) and it spun the truck around breaking off the plow. We limped home, put some spare wing arms on, and welded the plow back up. An hour later we were back plowing again. I was lucky it wasn't a lot worse. The bridge was ok.I learned it is experience that gives you skill…….. Important lesson!Funniest part of the story is afterward my wingman told me he was watching how close I was coming to things a said to himself, this guy is really good or really lucky. KECorbin22 Posted April 21, 2014 Share Posted April 21, 2014 Well my super trucker experience happen in Ohio, Two back to back, We was doing a boat show in Jan. pulling a 19' X 90' houseboat. We made the stop at Cincinnati with no problems after leaving the show headed to Columbus ran into construction where there was concrete barriers on both side of the highway, Lo and behold lost a set of duals off one of the four axle trailer, wedge right up against the boat and the other two axles, dead in the water. We had traffic blocked for almost two hours. After making it to the Ohio State fairgrounds and working all night to set up the boat for the show and with just a few hours to spare, Boss man in a panic tells me to get the truck and trailer outa there, slowly pulling forward about the time trailer clears the boat I see a series of transformers mounted about 5 ft off the ground come falling over, power lines falling all over the place, sparks flying every which way. Popping the brakes and killing the motor, opening the door and jumping as far as I could in the only place that did not have any power lines on the ground and running like hell on my ass, I finally stop and looked behind me, the boom mounted onto the truck was still in the up position. State Police Headquarters was right across from the convention center and there were a half dozen State Boys sitting in their cars watching me as this all happen. They had a good laugh, said I got gold on that jump, that the guy the week before did not do as much damage. Although the electric was knock out for half of Columbus and the State Boys had to run on generator power for a few hours, The Fairgrounds was in the process changing all the service to underground they was all sit to do it after that Boat Show but delayed the show a few hours for the Electric Company to change it over.
