Low Hole?

Recommended Posts

I hear a lot of guys talking about trannies with a "low hole".

Are all low hole trannies, just whatever the tranny is, with a low range box added?

So does any tranny with a "low hole" have twice the gears, or do some just have a particular low range??

Thanks, Phillip

In twin stick trucks with a Quad box, it's in the compound box. It's LO-LO and not usually used when spliting, but when you need to get started with a heavy load.

Like the 8LL? I assume it's in the main box, not the splitter on the back(for hi/lo range changes).

I'm sure guys will fill in the details if I'm off track with the newer stuff.

Like Freightrain said

Its a gear box with an extreamly low gear ratio. Its used to move heavy loads in the mud or up a steep incline.

mostly found in off road trucks.

So it's just a very low first gear?? Okay, that's what I had originally thought, but I read something that I thought said otherwise.

So an 8 speed with a low hole is still just an 8 speed, but has a very low first?

Thanks, Phillip

alot of gearboxes, mack and off breed brands have "low low" some are better than others. the mack 6 speeds and 8LL are both good gearboxes for the offroad. some transmissions were intended for on road and very little offroad (gravel dirt etc..) other for on and off road (soft clay, job sites etc..) A big HP engine wont help you get a truck moving in the dirt if that low gear is to fast. thats how you snap diffs, clutches driveshafts etc..

Rear end ratio is a major factor for off road also. but thats another story with truck specs.
