  1. Just purchased a 57 b61t. Has a painted grill shell and would like to get chromed or purchase a chrome. Does anyone know who does chroming on something like this?
  2. I have a 1978 Mack F model cabover, tandem dump for sale. It came from factory with a 290 Cummins big cam and a 13 speed Eaton trans. The truck has 160,000 original miles. I do know the history on the truck, I am the 3rd owner. The Mack runs good and is currently inspected and registered in PA. The only thing I would do if going to work it, is put in a new clutch brake. The dump body is a Godwin, not very old and in good condition. Still use it for personal hauling now but is ready to be put to work. If showing it needs some work to be perfect. Contact me through my email at cheech147@msn.com
  3. I was watching it and then sent a message inquiring if the seller would sell just the tractor. He gave me a price on the tractor, but then I noticed the hours on it. I drive a company truck now and run within a 100 mile radius. It's an 07 with close to 400,000 miles and about 11,000 hours on it. That's why I was looking at the mileage and hours on this Mack. 30,000 hours with only 500.000 miles tells me there's a lot of idle time on the engine or it's been driven around under 25 mph all it's life. Just joking, but to answer your question, I'm not interested in the truck anymore. I think it might be close to rebuild time and I don't want to invest what he's asking and hope it doesn't have to be rebuilt on top of that. If memory serves me correct, the description states he did some engine work, but he wasn't specific on what was done.
  4. appledog, I just posted a similar post and then found yours. I think we are looking at the same truck, if is currently listed on ebay. Take notice of the hours. It seems high for that mileage. I, like you, am not real familiar with the newer motors and really never really looked at the mileage/hours ratios. If i'm correct in some topics I've read, those hours may push up the equation of mileage to closer to a million of normal driving.
  5. Looking for some help on the E7 427 Mack Engine. I'm looking at buying a 98 Mack CH613 E7 with a 427 engine. The seller advertises is at 500 hp. I'm familiar with the older Mack engines like the 300's and 350's but the newer ones started to escape me. Guess I'm getting old. What bothers me about this truck is the mileage and hours comparison. It has about 500,000 miles with over 30,000 hours. It is setup with a wet line so I'm guessing it has a lot of idle time on it. I drive a company truck now with only 12,000 hours with 400,000 miles. Can anyone tell me about the engine and what they think of the mileage and hour ratio?
  6. Thanks for the replies, maybe I'll give it a shot.
  7. Was wondering if any Mack gurus can help me out. I'm looking at a 70's Mack with a 300 engine. Thinking of buying it. Problem is it had a 5 speed and the current owner swapped it out for a 13 speed. Seems to me he defeated the purpose. He said he likes shifting. What I'm concerned about is if the 13 speed will work well with that engine since the hp and tq range was compatible with the 5 speed. I drove 5 speed 300's and 350's with no problems. Can anyone enlighten me if this was a good idea or not.
  8. 1958 FWD, thank you. I understand they send a lot of information from others who had posted. Just didn't want to embarrass myself by sending too little. I had a little more in mind and didn't know if it was sufficient in comparison to others. Thanks again.
  9. Thank you for the replies. Just one question. What do you consider a fair donation? Have no problem with that, just have no idea what to send.
  10. While reading some posts, there were a couple references to being able to obtain information on older Macks. I have a 78 F series that came with a 290 Cummins, 13 speed Eaton and Neway rear suspension. I would like to identify what other parts are Mack or if other components were put in from the factory. The local dealer frowns when I go in for parts since they have to do a little work to look them up. Can anyone tell me if there is a way I can obtain this information. I read somewhere there is a contact person or two that can send all the information on older macks. If anyone knows, please tell me how I can get in touch with them. I would greatly appreciate any help I can get.
  11. Thanks guys. The dog was a working truck up until a couple years ago. Going to restore and want to make some changes to it. First thing is I want hear the stack without that whine from the fan. Gets real annoying at higher rpm's.
  12. I think this truck and a similar one from the same seller is on ebay now.
  13. Any mechanics out there familiar with this set up? I understand it was a popular combination years ago. I have a 78 Mack F series with this combination. Question I have, is that the engine has a regular fan setup. I was wondering if it is possible to change it to a clutch fan. Tired of hearing the manual fan whining all the time and need all the horsepower i can get out of it.
  14. Name: Mack F series (1978) Date Added: 30 March 2010 - 07:05 AM Owner: cheech147 Short Description: Formerly a tandem tractor now has dump body. Has a Cummins 290 big cam with 13 speed Eaton. 15. Can anyone give me an educated guess on a problem I have before going to a garage with it. I have a 78 Mack F Model. It has 160,000 original miles. Came from factory with a 290 Cummins and a thirteen speed Eaton. Was used as a tractor to pull a lowboy most of it's life and is geared real low. I've owned it for the past 10 years and it runs fine except for one problem. It has been in need of a clutch brake since I bought it, but my mechanic suggested waiting until it needs clutch replacement. Shifter is a bit sloppy but shifts fine, up and down, until it really warms up. Then it's like fighting with it to get it in and out of gears, both shifting without clutch and double clutching. Any ideas on why this is happening?
  16. Thanks L, it's a single axle and the price is right. I always liked that short hood even thought they bounced a little because of the short wheel base. Couldn't beat the U for backing up a trailer though. The reason I asked about the 285 because was thinking of stretching the frame and putting a screw on it for a tractor. I didn't know how much different the 285 was to the 350. It seems the key is that power band and trans combo regardless of the hp. From what you stated the 285 doesn't sound much different from the 350 I drove. I have a couple options with the use of it, guess I'll go with leaving it a single axle and mounting a dump body on it. I was considering stretching making it a screw. Wishful thinking.
  17. I'm looking at buying an 89 U model with a 285 engine and 5 speed transmission. I drove a a U model for years with a 350 and 5 speed. Hauling freight around the 45,000 lb. range it did o.k. Of course it wouldn't pull the hills like a 425 Cat, but it did fine with other trucks on the road. Was wondering if anyone out there is familiar with the 285's and how they perform.

    My F

Sometimes Mike, that's the problem. I deal with Triple Cities Mack in Scranton, PA. One time I went in to order a part and they told me that MAck did not have information that old on computer. Funny thing though is when my mechanic calls them and orders parts for my truck and gives my VIN number they always are able to look it up. Sometimes it's just finding that right person that loves these old timers as much as we do to go that extra mile. No pun intended. One thing Mike, the sales rep at my local Mack dealer was formerly the service manager. He has been with them for years. He is the type of guy that the first day I pulled in with the truck, he knew everything about it. What engine, trans rears, etc. Even though the truck came in from Jersey originally, he is the type of guy that knows every Mack in the area. You want to find one of those who even if they were not around when your truck came in, knows someone who was.

    My F

Nice Story Terry. The first tractor I drove was an F Mack. A friend of mine worked for an International Harvestor Tractor dealer and drove down to Harrisburg, PA to pick up tractors every week. One day he was moving a machine locally and asked if I wanted to drive. I drove about 15 miles on a country road in a five speed. About 8 years ago I decided to get into excavating and hauling. I spotted my 78 Mack F series for sale on a lot and when I went back it disappeared. I wound up buying an old Brockway tractor and trailer. The day I was going to pick it up, the Mack was back on the lot. I wound up buying it from the owner and have been working the truck since. I guess since it was the first truck I drove, I never thought I would ever own one. Even though I don't use it much anymore, I can't part with it. It originally was a tractor used by a construction company in New Jersey to move heavy equipment. They were the original owner and their name is still on the horn button. Scrimo Bros. is the inscription. I bought the truck with 130,000 original miles and I have close to 160,000 on it now. It has a Cummins 290 with a 13 speed. High rears don't give me much highway speed but it will still pull a montain.
