  1. A little off topic but i remember as a kid seeing an old f model pulling a flat bed loaded with steel ( you know he was 80,000) pass us at night uphill (5 mile hill on rt 380) like we were standing still (and we were in a car) when my father and i saw this in amazement we went and caught up to this bad f model to see under the cab the exhaust manifold and turbocharger glowing red. My dad tells a story of a guy that used to haul oil to a black top plant at night with a b-61 and he had the juice turned up enough that supposedly he would blow a small flame out the straight pipe. He would always burn through the exhaust elbows because of the heat. Just thought id add these two little stories
  2. its funny to me that people either love mack 12 speeds or hate them.
  3. The only way we have found to make owning trucks worth it is to have your own work, and not by working for other people. Too many owner operators cut each others throat and the rate is low enough it almost doesnt leave anything for the truck. Dont get me wrong, there is decent work out there sometimes, and having a good truck with out any payments helps too, but for the monetary investment you are better off owning a taxi cab than a tandem......
  4. in NJ we try to stay away from the 20,000lb front and go with the 18,000lb so only one box is used making the steering system simpler. The two box system has been around for a while so i wouldnt be scared of it. Just make sure you service that power steering systm often because it hurts buying one steering box let alone two!
  5. Be a man get your oun tire hammer and bars and do it your self
  6. trent i dont anyone who ever payed attention to the "only use low in first" decal in trucks with six speeds. I even know guys who would split them like a duplex, (even though there isnt any gain) they are bulletproof. The best way i have found to shift a six speed is 1st through third in low, then wind out third and shift aux into high and proceed into 4th and 5th. hope i wasnt too off topic
  7. Yes i have seen 24" budd wheels, new york city has them on some of their trucks. they look really strange because of their size and with the cone of a 58,000lb rear sticking out. The rim is also very beefy. I was told by our mack salesman that it is a very expensive option over spoke wheels
  8. thanks for the info, thats what i thought, i just wanted to check what was right for my '84 dm 800

  12. its amazing how hard it is to find drivers these days. Automatics arent the answer in most dump and mixer applications. There are alot of local guys here in central nj buying automatics in new tri axle and tandem dumps. They thought it would be easier to find drivers. Now their problem is that they take a guy for a road test and he can drive the truck, but the guy doesnt know how to handle a loaded tandem. the new trucks with automatics are really fast and these guys hammer down and have been turning the trucks over and not being able to stop due to cowboy driving and inexperience. so what my thought is if you cant handle a 6 speed, an 8LL, or a ten speed than you shouldnt be driving the truck! just my 2cents
