  1. Well I got the filter apart with a little prying negotiation. The transmission seems to be stuck in gear, might end up taking the top off the tranny. The starter is hooked up and I get 24V to the solenoid but the starter will only budge the motor a little before something clicks and then I have to wait a few moments to try again. I am thinking a bad ground or rough terminals are the cause so that will be my first area to troubleshoot. Any tips or thoughts would be appreciated.
  2. Could someone set me straight on the fuel filter change? I unscrewed the top fitting on the filter canister but the bolt won't pull through, do I have to pull the bottom one off as well?
  3. The Norco ex cement truck I posted about a while back came home with me today, so from the time it got here (10:30 AM roughly) to sundown I have been tinkering. Had to take the axle shafts out for towing and aired up a few tires, collected the extras and waited for the wrecker. I changed the oil, but ordered the wrong oil filter as it appears mine has the bypass thing. The filter I ordered is waaay too short but the right diameter. The fuel filter seems to be giving me a hard time but I will do some research. Drained the fuel tank and put in 10 gallons of fresh juice and also put in 2 brand new batteries. I have 24 volts going to the solenoid and I bench tested the starter before bolting it onto the truck. So my next thing tomorrow will be to try and turn it over after jerry rigging the ignition switch. I will have pictures to post tomorrow and with any luck, a video of it running! Another update is I got my Class A CDL and currently work for Casella doing Resi pickup in an automated sidearm monster pig of a truck. 2013 international Durastar... junk.
  4. well, the truck is still OOS, looking at starting clases again next week. Two of the shifting forks broke and there was some excessive separation between two of the gears... They ordered the parts yesterday. so much for taking this week off to make class easier!
  5. Well, unless other wise stated we have class on Monday. we started going through downtown Plattsburgh on Tuesday when the tranny shi* the bed. Maybe next week we will be doing hills in Keene , NY. I'll keep you fellas posted on our progress
  6. Well, I was doing much better on the second day, but 5th was starting to fail, wouldn't go in most of the time so we had to do 4th to 6th. the other student started driving and we lost most of the tranny before we got back to the shop. So after we lost 5th soon to follow was third, 10th, 9th, 4th and 8th, so all we had was 1st, 2nd, 6th and 7th. we creeped back to teh shop at a blistering 20MPH in 7th! They pulled the tranny out today, next class date TBA. The instructor said it wasn't anything we did, but you can imagine that truck has seen some abuse with all the student drivers. Back in january my one thing I requested for my birthday was a roadcarrier's atlas, it sits on my Blazer's dashboard now waiting to plan trips. I know how "reliable" those GPS' can be!
  7. well I started trucking school Monday, the first day went pretty well. We are learning in a 90's international with a cummins and 10 speed eaton fuller. Upshifting wasn't too bad, but downshifting will take some getting use to for sure!
  8. The truck has 6.34 rears and I believe 20" rubber, what speed would this thing top out at? After talking to a friend from the FD today I may even have a lowboy to go get it as well.
  9. I have always had a soft spot for diesels, it broke my heart when I had to hand off my 2003 duramax so I need something to fill that hole! The gas job has a 401 I think, it is a B42. I think the truck would be a great resto project for someone who wants a gas job, the cab is almost perfect, the frame is covered in rod grime/ grease so you can only assume it is mint... the dump box is rough and the engine block is cracked. Repower and drive with some tinkering probably.
  10. That is what I was thinking, and I could always sell the 711 as I do not have anything around me big enough to pick the motor out of the truck anyway. How much do those motors weigh anyhow?
  11. The fela got a hold of me today, the truck comes with a power steering unit from another truck (it was built with this anyway) a whole set of extra wheels, a 711 Turbo spare motor and a spare rear end. The bottom rear of the cab is rotted as well as the door posts by the base of the window (looks to be a simple fix). There is a large hydraulic pump on the nose. I did not see any antifreeze in the radiator but that might be from th eradiator hose being disconnected. I did not note any discoloration of oil on the dipstick. There is some rust between the doubled frame rails, but no holes. He wants $2500, what do you guys think?
  12. Yeah, I kind of figured dumping a bunch of chemical in the intake wouldn't be good for it haha. These are all great pointers, thank you everyone for chipping in! Now for the hard part, getting the guy to call me back. Dropped off my number where he told me he worked last time we talked early last week and still no call, so I am going to see if any of my FD buddies know him. There really isn't a whole lot of trucks near me and everything else I have been called with was in the 7K range... not quite what I want to pay for a project lol. The only other truck near me (just down the road actually) is a gas job with 8.15 rears!
  13. I have always loved the '61 Chevys, given it is an 80 series that makes it a Spartan correct?
  14. Well I have been tossing around the idea of a local b model for some time now and would like some input from the community. The truck is a '60 (I think) B 61 ex- cement truck (minus the body). The truck has power steering, with a rebuild P/s pump. The air brake chambers have been stripped off the truck and it appears the rear differential's axle shafts are sitting outside the truck. Before I decide to make a move on this truck I want to see if it will run. She has been sitting in a field for a number of years and I can imagine they are nothing like getting an old gasser going again. usually you toss in a set of points and some fresh gas and they will fire up... but given there is no point, plugs or carburetor and I am armed with very basic knowledge of how diesels operate, what should I do or not do to try and get her purring again? I have heard of people using Ether but have been advised against it, and I am sure the fuel tank should be drained to start with as not to put that nasty sediment and old fuel through it... any ideas?
  15. Hello all, I am looking for a B Model , Diesel. Tandem is preferable. I would like to find a project truck in the $2500 ballpark near Plattsburgh or Peru as I am certain the towing bill will be insane. If you have any leads on or have what I am looking for feel free to Email or call dayfox1223@yahoo.com or 518-569-6974. I typically sleep 8AM to 3 or 4 PM as I work the graveyard shift, just leave a message with contact info.
  16. I know the diesels are not that great either, noted at around 10 mpg, but I would take 10 over 6 any day. I think I will just keep searching for something else, like a single axle tractor with a duplex or triplex. I know this truck isn't going anywhere, so if I ever need or want another it wil be there. Thanks for your responces all- got some good answers for sure.
  17. I was looking more towards fuel efficiency, and I never thought about an auxiliary because the transmission already being split- very interesting idea you have. I want something to cruise with for the most part and maybe on occasion pull a trailer. Not intended for commercial use. I know working on a gasser would be a bit eaiser for me given I know very little about diesels.
  18. The motor needs to be pulled no matter what goes back in, the block is split. I figured with the rear ends out of another B model tractor it would just bolt right up. I was under the impression that a diesel from another Bmodel would mount up just fine to the tranny- but I have never seen the differences between a gasser and diesel as far as component location and clearences. Then again maybe I would be better off finding a truck with what I want already in it. Harder to get a big ass truck to my house the further away it is though.
  19. So I have mack on the brain and have been toying with so many ideas it isn't even funny. The truck I would be mutilating is a '60 B-42. I was thinking along the lines of chopping off the sides of the dump box to make a flatbed, or just getting rid of the box all together for a straight tractor. The rear ends are 8.15s, not suitable for interstate or hardly back road travel only being able to do tops of 40 MPH. 20 speed Quad box which I would prefer to keep- So my question is just how hard is it to swap or even find replacement rear-ends for this truck along the lines of making it do 55 or 65ish? Can the ring and worm gears just be changed out? also I want to ditch the 401 gas for anything B model diesel. Any ideas or comments on the matter would be greatly appreciated even if to discourage me. My prime reasons for selecting this truck is location and price.
