  1. The LJ is safe for now. Found it a temporary home in the local community college compound. It might even get worked on there.
  2. It has the Mack Lanova 272 engine. Auxillary trans don't know a lot about that either but it has 3 shift levers. I suspect 5 on one stick Lo Dir Rev on the second and deep reduction on the 2 position lever. Mack top loaded Tandem rears but sorry I don't know the ratio. It will be high as it was used for moving heavy equipment. Very heavy axles Timken roller bearing kingpins. It was used during the building of the Trans Canada Hwy and then ended up in Edmonton Alberta where it was purchased by the previous owner and brought to Southern Manitoba and used to move draglines. I have some literature that came with it.
  3. Nearly complete '49 LJ for sale cheap to serious buyer. I have to let it go by December according to the zoning bylaws being enforced in my village. The unit will roll. Engine is stuck. I pulled the pan when I got it and the bottom end looks good. Cleaned out the pan and loosley reinstalled. Most of the interior upholstery removed. Dang mice! Gauges all there. She's a super heavy duty ol' truck and deserves a good home. Any reasonable offer around what I have invested in aquiring it accepted. $1500 starting point? John mcnarryjr at goinet.ca 204 752 2263
  4. I haven'tbeen here for a while as other things have been demanding my time. My '49 LJ WSX has been sitting since I grought it home. The local municipality has decided I'm in contravention of the local bylaws by storing it on my residential property. I have no room inside. Too many projects so the LJ has to go. I'm in south western Manitoba Canada. I won't refuse any reasonable offer for the unit as I don't want to see the ol' girl scrapped. John
  5. I just got the book on Mack L models by T Warth. There is only one picture of t truck with the same hood side badges as my LJ. They are elongated ovals that have MACK DIESEL in script on them. Below that the side panels are drilled for three chrome stipes. Does anyone know where to get a set of the stripes? Might they be the same as the long one on a B ?
  6. Thanks, Just got the Black and White picture book of the L series. Mine is missing the " 3 Spears" of Stainless or chrome down the hood side. Still have the Mack Diesel emblems for the sides though. Super Dog you mentioned you might have the front Mack emblem??
  7. Don't know for sure yet. It has three levers one on the passengers side that has three gate positions and on between the seats that has only two. I oiled and freed up the linkages. I think the main has 5 speeds and reverse the far lever on the passenger side is Lo Dir and OD and the two position lever a splitter? Hi CC
  8. The engine is the same as yours (END 672 -1459) but the rear suspension is a very heavy Mack double reduction unit. The transmissions seem to be a five speed with a reverse and a Brown and Lipe with LO DIR and OD and a splitter. The unit was used to move Koering Draglines around. She's definetly not a speed demon! Don't know yet how badly the engine is stuck. It last ran in 1984. I found a flyer in it diecribing it as a LJSWX-D but I'm not sure if that is right. The rad is different on the Flyer picture. I have cut off most of the welded on non Mack junk and cleaned out the old mouse eaten upholstery. I intend to get the side windows replaced and the doors working better before it goes back into storage. I'll keep collecting parts and info while other work goes on. You LJ looks to be in as good a condition.
  9. Thanks SuperDog. I've been watching Ebay but have been a little unsure of the differences in the Bulldogs. Think I have it now. Pointy ears and Tail and the bottom of the back legs slightly angled to match the base. Holes in back legs only. I'll keep watching for a name plate too. Might have to get back to you on that. Old Macks are few and far between in this part of the world.
  10. My LJ has lost its Dog and from what I can tell the proper one stands only on its hind legs. Any other clues how to Identy the right one?
  11. I finally got the Mack home. towed it 5 miles with my F 250. I've been wondering about the history and changes in the Bulldog Mascott My little puppy is AWOL and so is the Mack Name plate. I've been watching Ebay but there seems to be many different styles of mounting and sizes of dogs. What is right for a '49 LJ ?
  12. The "Aux box" on my L says Brown and Lipe on the top cover casting. Do any of you recognize it and can you tell me what it's shift pattern is?
  13. Thanks for the information guys. I'll do a search for that book Bumblebee. CML, yes, I used to hang out on the ACMOC board but spend most of my Caterpillar time at ACME. I have some corrospondence between Mack in NJ and the previous owner. Apparently the record of this truck is lost but I do have a copy of the build sheet for the previous serial # truck. Built in '49. I'll look on the frame where you discribe but she's cut pretty short at the back end.
  14. Hi All, I live in southwestern Manitoba Canada. I just recently made a deal to acquire a LJ Mack that belonged to an old friend of mine who has passed on. He used the LJ to move his Koering draglines. The Serial # on the Mack's registration is 202517. I don't see any data tags on her anywhere. Where would they be if the existed and is the serial # punched in the frame somewhere? Can you guys tell me what year she is? The Dog is missing as are the spears from the hood side panels but other than that it is fairly complete at firsdt glance. It will have to wait a bit to get into the shop as I have several other projects ahead of it. I'll be here looking and learnin' Thanks,
  15. No problem Packer. Still haven't convinced myself or the "handbrake" that I should bring the ol' L home. Can't stop thinkin' about her though. (the truck that is)
  16. That sounds like a good deal. Still haven't found a source for 10:22
  17. I remeber well in about 1978 I changed from bias ply flat base to drop center tubless rims on my working Hwy Tractor. It even made that thar Hendrickson seem like a smooth ride! But this L model is a "Vintage Unit" so any sources truxnut?
  18. I am being a little cautious about jumping right in and buying that L model. It has 10.00x 22 tires. Are they available still? Who makes them? Thanks
  19. Thanks Guys. Superdog it does have the Mack Lanova Diesel but as yet I don't know much about it. I have rebuilt several of the END engines. What's the displacement of the the Lanova engine? Any one have a good shot of the right side of the engine. This one currently has a real rats nest of injection lines. I guess as one failed the owner would just use any line from any old engine to replace it. I'd like to see how it should look. I have the resources to fabricate new lines @ work. Andy my oldest son wants in on this one. That's a good thing I think except he wants to paint it the original dark blue that is under the yellow. I always liked the really dark green. Ol' Cat yellow works for me but she's a long way from paint!
  20. I have an opportunity to purchase an L. It hasn't run for at least 4 years and hasn't pulled a load for about 20. I knew the previous owner well. He hauled heavy equipment with it specifically Koering Draglines. I collect all sorts of old Iron and my collection is getting heavier with my interest in Caterpillar. I have just recently completed a 1938 D23J. If I stay with Cats my present hauler isn't big enough and I really like the look of the old Mack. It has a Lipe auxillary which I have no idea how to shift yet but by the time its ready to haul a Low bed I figure I'll have learned how. looking forward to learning more. Thanks
